There have been numerous searches done and A lot of people told me he couldn't be found prior to 1880 in Maury county, however in two cases I was told the family was found and I was very happy with that but getting it right is what it's all about so I want to be sure. I am putting the email that verifies this below and ask anyone who has an 1860 and 1870 census for Maury county Tn. will you double check this for me please? Carl: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Found the following: 1860 Maury County, Tn. Census-#51-325 ESTES, Sarah 38 Mary 15 Wilson 13 Martha 8 Thomas 6 This is all I could find. I checked the 1850 census, but could not find Sarah with a husband. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS WAS GREAT, SO I WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN SOMEONE LATER TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T BE FOUND PRIOR TO 1880. I have been told they werent there so many times it was hard to belive someone had really found them.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1870 Maury County, Tn. It look's like there were two SARAH ESTES' with a son named WILSON but only one with a Thoma
G'day Carl, > On several occasions I have asked for help in locating THOMAS ESTES > b1855 as a boy. There have been numerous searches done and A lot of > people told me he couldn't be found prior to 1880 in Maury county Just a brief note there .. the inability of a researcher to find a particular person in one or more census' does not prove that person was not really there! :) The researcher may have missed the entry, he/she may only have a partial listing for that census, the person who transcribed the census may have made a mistake or even the census taker himself. I know of cases where someone was definitely living in a certain county during a census year and yet they dont appear in the original census records (ie: the originals, not transcripts). > Found the following: > 1860 Maury County, Tn. Census-#51-325 > ESTES, Sarah 38 > Mary 15 > Wilson 13 > Martha 8 > Thomas 6 > > This is all I could find. I checked the 1850 census, but could not > find Sarah with a husband. Have you checked neighbouring counties? > So my THOMAS did have a brother named WILSON I guess,, would someone > double check for me if you have these census's. It look's like there > were two SARAH ESTES' with a son named WILSON but only one with a > Thomas I saw only the one Sarah in the census extracts you provided. You have evidence for another one? I do have a Sarah married to Thrashley Allen Estes. Thrashley died 1856, Sarah died 1862. They had three children. Is this the other "Sarah" you were referring to? For what it's worth, the 1840 Maury Co, TN census has the following: Maury Co, TN Estes, Thomas 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 15/22 0 0 0 1 Estes, Henderson 2 1 1 0 2 1 0 0 0 28/25 0 0 0 0 1 Estes, Robert 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 9/35 0 3 0 0 0 0 1 Rows in the above are: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50. Thus there was a Thomas Estes, born 1810-1820, with a wife, born 1820-1825 and no children, living in Maury Co, TN in 1840. I would guess from his wife's age and the lack of children that they had only just married. >From the 1860 census record you gave, Sarah was born 1822. She was born 1827 according to the 1870 census, but in this case (given the ages of the kids), I'd say the 1822 date is more likely to be accurate. So 'tis possible that your Sarah (1822 .. 1827?) was the wife of Thomas Estes who appeared in the 1840 census. Possible, mind you. The above is not proof, just suggestive. I don't have the 1850 census at hand so I can't check there. As a final note .. what do the 1870 & 1880 census' say about where the children (and their parents) were born? I would imagine Mary, Wilson, Martha and Thomas (Jr?) were all born in TN, but at least the 1880 census should say where Thomas and Wilson's parents were born. And, importantly here, where their father was born. At least what state. The entry for THomas has: > 1880 Maury County, Tn. Census-pg 25-District 8-H.H #192 > ESTES, Thomas 26 > Bettie 23 Tn-NC-Tn So evidently the particular census you have should have the state of birth for Thomas' parents listed .. TN-XX-YY, as with his wife, Betty. cheers, David. -- A stranger in a world I never made - Housman DC2.D A+++! L^ Pfwl Bfl Fo R+++! Ac+ J-- S++ Fr+++!
