Forwarded by request .. From: Linne Gravestock <linne@quiknet.com> David, I'm going to try everything in order to reach this woman. Would you be amenable to re-posting her query, and then my answer to her, below it? That way, it will at least get into the Estes list archives. She wants help...and so do I. I have a very long descendancy chart on this family to send her, and she has some keys in her family that will bridge this descendancy chart and another very large family tree in east Texas. I'd appreciate it very much. Yours, Linne ____________________________________________ <dalawler@msn.com> wrote: Need info on parents of William J. The family that you personally are a part of is another very large tree, most of which came from SC, across the states in the deep south, and then settled in the counties of east Texas. You may have what I need: the connecting links that go between the Waco, McKinney Co., Texas group, and the Cherokee/Rusk/Henderson, etc. counties in east Texas. This was sent to me and I'm thinking it was meant for the list. Hi! I'm searching for my mother's great grandmother, Sarah Estes who was Estes when her first child, Lizzie Annette, was born and then had 2 more children Pearl Driggers and Viola May Osbon. If you run across anyone who appears to be connected to this family, I would sure appreciate a heads up. On one of the info sheets I have there is mention that Sarah was born in Granville IL. I'm thinking that the IL was a mistake as all the other entries are for White Co., IL and there is no Granville in White Co. Rec'd this message below, thru the Estes list. I have recall of this same family legecy (story) being told over and over to me as I grew up. Hi I am part of the Northern line reaching back to Peter in Massachusetts. My grandfather was born in Canada because his mother was there visiting family. If I can help in any way let me know. Tom
Hi David et al, I am still out here, and still stuck on Lucy Emily ESTES OWENS. Yesterday I found found land patents in McLeod County, Minnesota for her daughter-in-law's father Samuel Francis WHEELER and also for the following ESTES: Diadama Estes, issue date June 20, 1870 John G. Estes, issue date September 1, 1869 Does anyone connect to this family? Jacqui
Hello? Anyone alive out there? <grin> I just got the following query and since I dont have anything on Canadian Estes, I'm forwarding it here in case someone else might. bound to be of the northern line. Email me any responses and I'll pass 'em on to Elinor. Cheers, David. Forwarded email: What a lot of work has gone into this research. However, I didn't find much on the Estes name in Canada and since this was my grandmother's maiden name (Leafa Estes), I am particularly interested. The only information I have is that she was the daughter of John Estes (b. 1813) and Hannah Walker (b.1816). Any suggestions on where to go from here? On a resent trip to Eastern Oklahoma looking for my Logan family I found the grave of a "A. J. Estes " Husband of Georgia Estes. Born June 20, 1861. Died March 22, 1935. I hope that this will help someone fill in some gaps. The cemetery is in Wister, OK. Ellis Chapel is the name of the cemetery. I have a photo also that I can E-mail
Try researching James as being son of Nathaniel Estes, born 1770 in Granville Co., NC and died in Wake Co., NC. Mother being Nancy ??, If this is so, he would be grandson to John Estes & Sarah "Sally" Bennett. I am a descendent of John Estes and Sarah "Sally" Bennett through Nathaniel's other son, John, born 1797 died bet. 1825 - 1830. My records do not show John Estes & Sarah Bennett having a son named James, but John's son Nathaniel does show a son named James B. Estes, born 1793. (There can be a one or two year variation in dates due to some way records were kept, I forget the legal defination now.) My records show John Estes and Sarah "Sally" Bennett as having 7 children. Nathaniel born 1770, died 1845. William 1775, 1827. Sarah married Thomas J. Pruett 1780, ?. Daniel 1784, 1818. Thomas 1785, died bet. 1850-1860. Hezekiah 1786, ??. John B. 1791, after 1840. I show for Nathaniel's ancestry Nathaniel9 Estes (John8, Ephraim7, Sylvester6, Abraham5, Sylvester4, Robert3, Sylvester2, Nicholas1) The only thing I show for this James B. Estes is born 1793. For Nathaniel I show the following. He was born 1770 in Granville Co., NC and died 1845 in Wake Co., NC. He married Nancy ?. Census 1: 1810, Granville Co., NC Census 2: 1830, Wake Co., NC Census 3: 1840, Wake Co., NC Notes for Nancy: Census 1850. Wake Co., NC. In 1850, Nancy was living in Wake Co., NC, as head of household. I have no other information on James B. Estes. As a matter of interest: My closer ancestor Samuel, son of John (brother of your possible James) married Amanda Mangum 10/18/1845 in Granville Co., NC. They then moved to Calhoun Co., AL & then to Cherokee Co., AL. If this helps you in any way, I'm glad & will be glad to help you in any way I can with past ancestors. It is a lot of fun doing genealogy, just very addictive. Good Luck, Sylvia Jennings
http://www.rootsweb.com/~txkaufma/wall/barnessr.htm Sterling Rex Barnes *There is no photograph of Sterling, as he was a deeply religious man who did not believe in having one's likeness preserved. Sterling was born 29 Jan 1799 to Henry Barnes & Rhoda Estes. He married Martha Ann Mitchell (1809-1871) in Lauderdale Co AL On 8 Dec 1825. He was a Wagon Maker by trade. By 1840 Sterling had moved his family to Marshall Co MS in 1836 and was serving on the Police Board of DeSoto Co MS by 1844. In 1846 Sterling brought his family to Kaufman Co TX, settling in the area that was to become Rockwall County, in the community now called Heath. He was appointed the first Justice of the Peace of Kaufman Co. Precinct #1 in 1852, thus his nickname "Judge Barnes", and was running a ferry across the East Fork of the Trinity River, which was located just across the road from his house. The place became infamous and today there is a 6-laned boulevard, Barnes Bridge Road, that travels through Dallas and Rockwall Counties, which was named for Sterling. Sterling was a Mason & was a slave owner. Four of his sons served in the Confederacy & one son, Marcus, who was on his way west during the gold rush, was killed by Indians in Pike's Peak Colorado. Sterling died 15 Mar 1866 in Rockwall Co. and is buried beside Mary at Heath Cemetery. The children of Sterling Rex Barnes: Robert Edward (1839-1870) Amanda Caroline (1827-__) William Henry (1830-1900) Marcus Lafayette (1831-1859) Wiley Turner (1834-1901) Mary Virginia (1836-__) Thomas Whitley (1842-1862 CSA) George Mitchell (1844-1897) Lucy Ann (1846-1880) Missianna (1849-1850) Joseph Milledge (1851-1855) Diane Miller

Hello Estes cousins :) I've been researching my husband's family history for a few months now and just found this mailing list. Nice to join y'all :) I'm looking for information on James Estes (Eastis) b.abt. 1792 - d.bet. 1860-1870 who married Charlotte Mangum on 9/11/1813 in Granville Co., NC. I know they moved to Dekalb Co., TN after 1850. They show up in the Dekalb Co., TN census in 1860 with their younger children and their grandchildren. I can't find them in Dekalb or any surrounding counties in 1850. I was told that he was the son of John Estes and Sarah Bennett. Can anybody point me to something that can be used to verify this? I'm in Tennessee, so my resources are limited as far as NC is concerned. Nice to be a part of the Estes family (even though it's through marriage). Love, R. Estes uchuujin@aol.com
I ran across things and thought it might be of interest to some of you: Short History of Farmington. Missouri It may be said of Farmington today that the sun of three centuries has shone upon it, for it was in 1798 that the first settlers camped on what is now known as Waide's Spring. That was during the time the Spanish occupied Upper Louisiana ....................... LETTER FROM UNCLE GEORGE This letter was written by the late Uncle George Murphy for a newspaper.............. It was where Farmington now stands, and was on the Fourth of July, 1822. .............. "Now, ladies and gentlemen, I am going to do my very best for you. I have never drawn this bow across these strings for any one to dance by since I left old Carolina, so now draw your partners." Out steps John D. Peers and Rachel Griffith, then comes Cal Poston with Mrs. Lucinda Burnham, and out steps George Dill and Mrs. George Estus; then comes George Estus with Melley Bennett. The books CHEROKEE BY BLOOD are abstracts of the actual land board hearings in the early 1900s set up by the federal government. They invited anyone who could prove grandma/grandpa was Indian to appear before the board & they would get free land. Lawyers all over the south were offering to sign up anyone for $5 a head to prove that grandma was Indian. Of course, everyone was trying to get something free. The hearings got so out-of-hand that they were closed. Most people had no Indian ancestry. The original records are stored at Ft Worth TX branch archives & copies are at most of the other branch archives on film. Linda McCain Stansell
