We live in country with a population approching 275 million people and it is difficult to think of a society where the largest town has fewer people than good sized suburban neighborhood. Well here are the populations of the eight LARGEST towns in Ulster according to Jonathan Bardon's "History of Ulster," page 146. Derry (population 1,052); Carrickfergus (962), Coleraine (633), Belfast (589), Armagh (409), Lisburn (357), Downpatrick (308), and Enniskillen (210). What this tells the researcher is when you can tie a specific person to a definite location in the 1600's in Ireland you are on the something. These settlers who came from Scotland and served on the various plantations for the benefit of the Lord Montgomery's and Hamiltons, and Colquhouns for the most part were soldiers or merchants and they came one by one, had families and hung around unless they were killed during the many uprisings and famines. How many different distinct genealogical lines made up the poulation of Belfast consdering there were 589 people in total. The probability of there being several unrelated lines of any one family is quite small. We think of the great migration to Pennsylvania in much the same light. History books tell us that THOUSANDS came in relentless waves on never ending ships, one after another. Listen to what Bardon says on page 177 of the same work: This migration across the Atlantic got under way just at the time that the coming of Scots into Ulster had almost completely ceased. Catholics had neither the resources nor the inclination to go to colonies, which were in any case overwhelmingly Protestant. The momentum of Presbyterian emigration gathered pace -around 3,500 left Ulster between 1725 and 1727-to reach a peak in 1728-9. Thomas Whitney, a seaman waiting to sail from Larne Lough, wrote in July 1728: "Here are a vast number of people shipping off for Pennsylvania and Boston, here are three ships at Larne, five at Derry, two at Coleraine, three at Belfast, and four at Sligo." This gives an idea from where they left and to where they were going during the precise time the Walkers and Cowans were alleged to have sailed. Three thosand or five thosand, still what we would call a village-this great wave of humanity wouldn't fill a decent high school football stadium on a nice Friday evening. We are a tight group-this little band of warriors. >> --part1_5f.928a026.26c9e42e_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <COWAN-L-request@rootsweb.com> Received: from rly-za01.mx.aol.com (rly-za01.mail.aol.com [172.31.36.97]) by air-za05.mail.aol.com (v75_b3.11) with ESMTP; Mon, 14 Aug 2000 19:45:41 -0400 Received: from lists5.rootsweb.com (lis

To the Estes researchers Please be advised, I had my ESTES family erroneously linked to DAVID SHIPTON I have known this was a mistake for awhile and frankly just forgot to change it to those fact's that are proven. To this date I have found no connection to DAVID SHIPTON however this does not rule out the possibility............ G'day Carl, > On several occasions I have asked for help in locating THOMAS ESTES > b1855 as a boy. There have been numerous searches done and A lot of > people told me he couldn't be found prior to 1880 in Maury county Just a brief note there .. the inability of a researcher to find a particular person in one or more census' does not prove that person was not really there! :) The researcher may have missed the entry, he/she may only have a partial listing for that census, the person who transcribed the census may have made a mistake or even the census taker himself. I know of cases where someone was definitely living in a certain county during a census year and yet they dont appear in the original census records (ie: the originals, not transcripts). > Found the following: > 1860 Maury County, Tn. Census-#51-325 > ESTES, Sarah 38 > Mary 15 > Wilson 13 > Martha 8 > Thomas 6 > > This is all I could find. I checked the 1850 census, but could not > find Sarah with a husband. Have you checked neighbouring counties? > So my THOMAS did have a brother named WILSON I guess,, would someone > double check for me if you have these census's. It look's like there > were two SARAH ESTES' with a son named WILSON but only one with a > Thomas I saw only the one Sarah in the census extracts you provided. You have evidence for another one? I do have a Sarah married to Thrashley Allen Estes. Thrashley died 1856, Sarah died 1862. They had three children. Is this the other "Sarah" you were referring to? For what it's worth, the 1840 Maury Co, TN census has the following: Maury Co, TN Estes, Thomas 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 15/22 0 0 0 1 Estes, Henderson 2 1 1 0 2 1 0 0 0 28/25 0 0 0 0 1 Estes, Robert 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 9/35 0 3 0 0 0 0 1 Rows in the above are: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50. Thus there was a Thomas Estes, born 1810-1820, with a wife, born 1820-1825 and no children, living in Maury Co, TN in 1840. I would guess from his wife's age and the lack of children that they had only just married. >From the 1860 census record you gave, Sarah was born 1822. She was born 1827 according to the 1870 census, but in this case (given the ages of the kids), I'd say the 1822 date is more likely to be accurate. So 'tis possible that your Sarah (1822 .. 1827?) was the wife of Thomas Estes who appeared in the 1840 census. Possible, mind you. The above is not proof, just suggestive. I don't have the 1850 census at hand so I can't check there. As a final note .. what do the 1870 & 1880 census' say about where the children (and their parents) were born? I would imagine Mary, Wilson, Martha and Thomas (Jr?) were all born in TN, but at least the 1880 census should say where Thomas and Wilson's parents were born. And, importantly here, where their father was born. At least what state. The entry for THomas has: > 1880 Maury County, Tn. Census-pg 25-District 8-H.H #192 > ESTES, Thomas 26 > Bettie 23 Tn-NC-Tn So evidently the particular census you have should have the state of birth for Thomas' parents listed .. TN-XX-YY, as with his wife, Betty. cheers, David. -- A stranger in a world I never made - Housman DC2.D A+++! L^ Pfwl Bfl Fo R+++! Ac+ J-- S++ Fr+++! What's the scoop? I've seen both claims, however I've only see a marriage for William and Frances Golding. The following is off my web site: William ESTES (1743/1745-1828) b&d.Orange Co, VA [9,16,113,142,207,304,389] +Frances GOLDING; 1770, Orange Co, VA [9,142,207,304,389] (Frances & William were named in a bill of complaint, where she was listed as the d/o William Golding.[207] According to W. Parrott Frances was the d/o William & Sarah Cox, but no evidence is given for this apart from a deed purchase from William Cox which had previously belonged to Samuel Estes and that the Estess and Cox's were neighbours, no record of a marriage b/t William Estes & Frances Cox has been found. On the other hand, there is a record for a marriage with Frances Golding and the bill of complaint also lists several of William and Frances' children & the Golding's and Estes' were also neighbours.[207]) The numbers in [..]'s refer to the sources/references listed on my web site. W. Parrott is a descendent and lives in Virginia. He has written several papers on the family published in local genealogical magazines and newspapers. The claim about Sarah Cox is in an early work of his which several have said contains "some errors". Whether Cox/Golding is one of them I'll leave for the reader to decide. :) cheers, David. -- A stranger in a world I never made - Housman DC2.D A+++! L^ Pfwl Bfl Fo R+++! Ac+ J-- S++ Fr+++! 7/13/00 To: Estes Family Membership From: Christopher Hartman Good afternoon. Please pardon the unsolicited posting, but I wanted to mention that I've acquired the following, which I thought the Estes family membership might want to know about. I describe it thus: SNOW, NORA E. The Snow-Estes Ancestry. Volume One: The Snow Family. Volume Two: The Estes Family. [Together, two volumes]. Hillburn, N.Y., [Np., privately printed], 1939. Thick 8vos. Pp. [6], 667; [18], 439. Frontispieces plus 69 fullpage plates, folding genealogical chart mounted to rear paste-down endpaper of volume II, tipped in errata & corrigenda. Expertly rebound in terra-cotta cloth, recent endpapers, black leather labels printed in gilt. Uncut and partially unopened. Fine. First and only edition. The personal copy of the author, Nora E. Snow, with her bookplates on versos of front-free endpapers. Genealogies of this variety were generally privately published for the benefit of subscribers, contributors and genealogical libraries. The Snow family volume commences with the American progenitor, Richard Snow, who settled at Woburn, Mass. in the late 1630s and delineates the family lineage with special attention to the William Payne Family, the Henry Stevens family, and others; the Estes volume makes the connection to the Snow family from the family of Matthew Estes of Dover, N.H. &c. Rare, and a special association. $200.00 This is a very large set, expertly bound and quite rare. As such, I must offer subject to prior sale and if of interest, please advise. In going thru the 1850 Census for Chesterfield County, SC I noticed a couple there that could very well be part of my clan from Lancaster County. Does anybody recognise the names of James ESTRIDGE [aged 33] and Sarah [his wife, aged 32].
