The site for TX General Land Office is at http://www.glo.state.tx.us/ Look for the link to archives. You may even email the webmaster if you have a question about ordering land records. Just a few years ago, all the archive records were indexed on computer so that is faster to use to locate an ancestor. Good luck. Linda McCain Stansell

I got a copy of the Land Grant Index at that time. I didn't pick up the other spellings, basically since it never dawned on me and I was realitively new to doing research in the field. But, never-the-less, here is what I picked up. Hope it can be of help for somebody. It is done in Microsoft Word97 as a text file. Hello friends, I am writing to notify you all that there has been a death in my family. I am in the Georgia line of Estes. Most of my family is from Meriwether County, Georgia. I am Misty Leigh Estes, my father is Lubie Hugo Estes Jr., my grandfather was Lubie Hugo Estes Sr., then Lubie Singleton Estes and so on. My grandfather's sister Ann Wheeler Estes died on March 11, 2000. I think that her real name was Ida or something. I will check in on that and I will let you know. Misty Estes
G'day Michael, I went and had a look at the cemetery records I had. I also also double checked the other two sources I had for James D(aniel) Estes. From the cemetery records there's only evidence of one James D. Estes and from the apparent placement of where he is buried he looks to have been the son of Coleman Estes. The two other sources (ie: not the cemetery listings) each only give one James D. Estes, but to different parents. The one which gave him as the son of Coleman also appears to be the more carefully researched one, so I'd say the other is wrong. So .. I think there was only the one James D. Estes and he was indeed the son of Coleman Estes. Ok. Now for the problem of the "wrong wife" you mentioned before. I'm not sure this is really a problem! >From the cemetery listings, buried next to James D. Estes was a Frances A. Estes, 1851-1915. You say your James Daniel was married to Frances Alexander .. I'd say "Frances A. Estes, 1851-1915" was her. The "A" standing for her maiden name .. a common practice was to put the initial of a wife's maiden name on her tombstone .. thus Frances Estes nee Alexander would then appear as "Frances A. Estes". The fact that they are buried side by side is also a pretty good indication they were married! Especially since their births were so close .. so can't be father and daughter. That leaves the "mystery" of why several of James' children as buried with the inscription " .. of JD and MF Estes". The simpliest and most logical answer to this is that Frances was in fact M(ary?) Frances. It would not be the first time someone used their middle name .. something her grandson, James Russell also did. So combining what you gave from the obit's in the bible along with the cemetery records (**) we have: : Coleman C. ESTES (1813-1864) b&d.Maury Co, TN : +Sarah Elizabeth MATHEWS; 1840, Maury Co, TN : . James Daniel ESTES (1848-1907) b&d.Maury Co, TN : . +M. Frances ALEXANDER (1851-1915); d.Maury Co, TN : . . Cora ESTES (1876-1882) of Maury Co, TN; d. Maury Co, TN : . . girl ESTES (1877-1878) of Maury Co, TN; d. Maury Co, TN : . . Annie ESTES (1878-1882) of Maury Co, TN; d. Maury Co, TN : . . girl ESTES of Maury Co, TN; to Williamson Co, TN : . . +Robert JENNINGS; bf.1907 : . . Mary Alexander ESTES (aftr.1885) of Maury Co, TN : . . +William Knox DUNNANVANT of St Louis, MO; aftr.1907; to SF, CA : . . Nollie ESTES (aftr.1885-1924) b&d.Maury Co, TN : . . +Harry HILL : . . James Russell ESTES (bf.1895) of Maury Co, TN; d.44yo : . . Wilburn ESTES (abt.1885) of Maury Co, TN; d.50yo Notes: I've got Mary A. Estes marrying after 1907 since she's listed in her father's obit as not being married. Since she and Nollie were both unmarried at the time I'd also estimate that they were aged _under_ 22 in 1907, hence that they were born after 1885. Since JR served in WWI, he was presumably about 20yo or older in the mid 1910's, hence he was likely born before 1895. As for Wilburn, he was your g-grandfather you say. Unless you are exceptionally young for a genealogist, counting back the generations gives Wilburn's dob as around 1885, which fits in neatly. Are your grandparents/parents still alive? It might be worth asking them if they have any recollections of family history .. especially dates. I would hope your grandfather (if alive) would know what year his father died! From the number of generations, I'd say you were born in the 60's or 70's? Much earlier would be pushing Wilburn's dob back too far for him to be the s/o James Daniel and Frances Estes. If I knew what year your father was born and whether he was 1st, 2nd etc child (or even the same for your grandfather), I could make better estimates. Actually, re JR .. you said he worked on the panama Canal. That was built during the years 1904-1914. Assuming he was about 20 when he went there to work, that'd make him born between 1884-1894. No latter since he'd be too young to have worked at building the canal in it's last year of construction. So likely "about 1890". ** Incidently, the graves are located in the "Estes Cemetery", Halliday Farm, Mt Pleasant Pike, Maury Co, > James Daniel Estes, born 1848 25th october, 1848. From his tombstone. > wife Frances Alexander Estes, married daughter Mrs. Robert Jennings > of Franklin (Tenn.), daughters Mary and Nolie .. His married daughter is noted as being married, but not the other two, indicating they were unmarried when he died. > J. Russell died of a heart attack at the age of 44; I'm still trying > to track down a date for that. His obit stated he was a veteran > ofWWI, and had previous military duty in the Philippines as an > officer in the regular army. Which is consistent with him being born around 1890, maybe a few years earlier since he was an officer and they were often older than "grunts" .. so died around 1930. Hi Diane: The given name "Beverly" interests me, too. The name first shows in my ancestors in the Daniel family in Middlesex Co VA when Robert Daniel Sr married Elizabeth Beverly abt 1716. Thereafter, almost each of their descendents named a son "Beverly" (I have 10 listed). The name came to Clark Co KY with the Daniel family. The Daniel family then moved into Estill Co KY where the Estes family lived. I've been trying to find a connection of the Daniel family to the Estes family either by blood or by friendship. Please send me any info you have on the Beverley Estes in TX. Thanks, Darla Researching surnames: Abney/Abner, Baber, Boran, Brinkley, Brookshire/Brookshaw, Chaney, Collins, Corley, Curtis, Daniel/Daniell, Daux, Davis, Estes/Eastis, Glover, Griggs, Grooms, Hall, Hornbuckle, Hughes, Johnson, Jordan, Lance, Littleberry, McIntosh/MacIntosh, Mannering, Mickelborough, Murphy, Noe, Puckett, Rogers, Sample, Sewell, Shearer, Sparks, Street, Tipton, Tolin/Toland, Tracy/Tracey, Ware, West, White, Williams, Witt/DeWitt
G'day folks, Just a quick note to let ya'll know that I've just posted an update to the Estes "contact page" on my web site. An extra 35-40 names have been added to the list. It can be reached, as with the other Estes files, via: http://xenon.triode.net.au/~dragon/ft/estes.html If ya not there, have a look at teh format and send me your details. If you are there, please do let me know if you change (or have changed) your email address. If you want a postal address also included, let me know the details of that as well. Unless requested I won't include postal addresses. No other updates this time. Well I have made some changes to the above index page .. but that's not particularly important. Oh, and note that the HTML version of the Abraham Estes file no longer exists. cheers, David. -- I bless the day I met you and I thank God that he let you lay beside me for a moment that lives on and the good news is I'm better for the time we spent together and the bad news is you're gone. - "You're Gone", Diamond Rio DC2.D A+++! There is a Beverly M. Estes in Granbury, Tx as early as 1876 (maybe sooner). He was a lawyer and there is a lot of data on him in the Granbury Museum records. With a name like Beverly I would think that he could possibly be connected to the family of Beverly Jack Estes. If anyone is researching this line and would like to have some data please contact me. The dates from Abe's line, along with other information from various obit pages from the Maury County Tennessee newspapers: James Daniel Estes, born 1848 (no specific date given), died June 20, 1907, at age 58. Survived by wife Frances Alexander Estes, married daughter Mrs. Robert Jennings of Franklin (Tenn.), daughters Mary and Nolie, and sons J. Russell and Wilburn, all of Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. One word about J. Russell: Although he went by his middle name, I believe his full name was James Russell; the only evidence I have to back me up on his first name is family anecdotal - my brother was named after him, and in the mid-1970s, JR's widow bequeathed my brother with a trunk full of old clothes, militaria, and letters to/from the front in World War I. Tragically, no one seems to know what's become of this trunk or its contents. Mary Alexander Estes was married to William Knox Dunnanvant (unsure about spelling...) of St. Louis, MO. Not sure of the date, but it was probably after her father's death, as her brother Russell gave her away - no mention of JD at all. J. Russell died of a heart attack at the age of 44; I'm still trying to track down a date for that. His obit stated he was a veteran ofWWI, and had previous military duty in the Philippines as an officer in the regular army. My grandfather gave me a tiny coin from Panama that he said his uncle Russell had given him from his days working on the Panama Canal; the so-called "Panama pill," as it's known to coin collectors. Russell was survived by Lelia Mai Nichols, and lived in Mt. Pleasant where he was active in the Legion. Mrs. Nolie Estes Hill of Mt. Pleasant died young on April 3, 1924; no age was given. She was survived by her husband Harry and three young children (no names given). Her brother Russell was mentioned as still being alive, and the Dunnanvants were living in San Francisco, California. Wilburn Estes died August 17 (no year listed) at the age of 50 in Mt. Pleasant; he had lived in Mt.Pleasant all his life, except for the last 7 years, in which he lived in Toledo Ohio. He was survived by his wife Bessie Chappell Estes and son James Richard Estes. (A daughter, Mary, died very young during the swine influenza epidemic in the early 1900s - family anecdotal information, not listed in the obit). Again, I'll try to track down some more dates; the ones I wanted to get posted were the James Daniel ones. Hopefully someone else will be able to provide a tidbit as well to definitively tie this James Daniel into the Abraham line. Thanks for everyone's help and support! Michael Estes
