    1. [ESTES-L] re: recent tragedy
    2. Some of you may be interested in the recent tragic story that ended yesterday with a funeral service at Irving TX for a victim of violent crime, Sandi Estes Scott, age 37. She was the daughter of Charles Estes of Irving & stepdaugher of Charles' wife Jessielynne Estes; and her mother & step father Annette & Billy Joe Riggs of Ben Wheeler. Her brother Mark Estes of Huntsville TX as well as sisters Tammie Klemman or Southlake TX & Joilynne Asley of LA also survive her. Sandi's grandfather who survives her is Chester A Estes of Irving TX. She left a husband Jacky Scott & 2 children Michael Wright & Tiffinee Williams. Sandi had been missing for 4 months. The only suspect had been questioned several times but the police could find no evidence. After he walked into a carwash where he had been recently fired & shot several employees to death, he finally told the truth about Sandi & took police to where her body had been all the time. Family requests memorials to Victims Against Violent Crimes in Sandi's memory. She was buried at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, Irving TX. Linda McCain Stansell

    3. David: I have for Lawrence Co., TN, Estes, John as the son of RW Thomas Estes, b. 1761 VA. This John served as executor for the estate of Thomas in 1833-4. He also signed an affidavit as witness of the death of Thomas in the widows application for a land warrant in 1853. From this evidence, scanty as it is, I have listed him as the brother of Floyd and Mary who married Peter Counce. Leo

    2. Doris, Hello. How are you doing today? I am good. Maybe our Estes paths cross. My Estes line is from Meriwether County and Troup County Georgia. Here is what I have. My father, Lubie Hugo Estes, Jr, was born on September 14, 1952. My uncle's (dad's little brother) name is Ray Owen Estes and he was born on June 28, 1955. My grandfather (Lubie Hugo Estes, Sr) was born in Gay, Georgia on April 17, 1917. Gay Georgia in Meriwether County, Georgia which is near LaGrange, Georgia. My grandfather was the baby and had three brothers (Melvin Estes, Travis Estes, Reinder Estes) and a sister (Ann Estes Wheeler who lives in Texas). My grandmother's full name is Elsie Mae Roberts Estes. Her birthday is March 29, 192_. She was from the Valley area in Alabama. It is near the Georgia State line and in the eastern time zone. Also the Valley is a tricity. It consists of Lanett, Riverview and Lafayette. My great grand father is Lubie Singleton Estes. He was born in Meriwether County in September of 1881 and married Mattie Popie Owens. My great great grandfather was David M. Estes. He was born also in Meriwether Georgia on December 21, 1876. He married Ida O'Neal. My great great great grandfather was John Wesley Estes. He was born in North Carolina on October 12, 1819. He died in Meriwether County, Georgia at 60 year of age. He married twice. He first married Frances Roberts who was my great great grandfather Davis M. Estes' mother. The second wife was Irene Elizabeth Miller Estes. My great great great great grandfather was James B. Estes. He was born in North Carolina in 1792. He married Lucy Fuller on October 26, 1813. My great great great great great grandfather was Lyddall Estes. His wife's name was Martha. Does any of that sound familiar? Do you have any of this on record? Thank you very much for your help! Misty Estes

    3. Joshua Estes was born abt 1840 in Troup Co., GA to Kimbrel Estes and Rebecca (Caldwell) Estes. Joshua married Frances Hart in 1860 and they had two sons: Bennett abt 1862 and Dixie abt 1863. Joshua joined the CSA in 1863 and died in 1864 from an accident. On the 1860 census the family is listed as Eastridge, but on the 1850 Troup Co, GA and on the 1870 Cleburne Co., AL Census the family is listed as Estes. Also on the 1870 Troup Co., GA, Frances and children are living with her parents. Dixie and all of his descendants used the named Eastridge, while Bennett used the Esteridge name. I have copies of court records where Bennett Estes filed suit against A B Hunter concerning the land that was assigned dower to Rebecca Estes, Kimbrel Estes widow. The name changing is confusing. Bennett Estridge and Mary Etta Prophitt were married in Troup Co., GA on Nov. 29, 1884 Mrs. Mariett Profitt, wife of Ben Estridge was buried in the Prophitt Cemetery in Troup Co., GA She was born 2-16-1866 and died 5-26-1890. I have information on most of Kimbrel and Rebecca's children, but would like to know more. Willing to share what I have. If you have any information on this family, please contact me. 3. G'day folks, I found the following census records in Estes Trails, 1989, vol.9, no.2, pp.9-12. It previously appeared in "Estes of America Newsletter", 1970, vol 4, no 2, p.14ff. Since a lot of Estes passed thru' TN and some of the early TN census records were lost, I thought ya'll might be interested. If you can identify any of these folks, please let me know who they are. Some I'll be able to place once I look at the information, other's I likely wont. In order the columns (of numbers) are: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70. First row are males, 2nd females. There were no entries for people over 70 (ie all further columns were "0"), so I've left these out.[*] Also if the "females" row ends short, just add in the zero's yourself. :) At the end of each male row there is a number split by a "/" .. eg: 14/12. 1. [ESTES-L] Sylvester Estes, s/o Abr Sr.
    2. Marayong
    3. G'day Debra & Joy (& others), Found some interesting tidbits on Sylvester Estes in "Estes Trails", 1989, vol9, no.4, pp.15-16. Submitted by Garmon Estes. Paragraphs indented by a "*" are taken from the above source. The rest are my own comments. * In "Cavaliers & Pioneers", Nell Nugent, p.237 is mention of a Robert Parish. He possessed land in King & Queen County that was bordered on one side by that of Silvester Estice. Dated 22/6/1722 (note as usual all dates are in english format, dd/mm/yyyy). Garmon comments that this appears to have been the same land that Abraham and Barbara had earlier lived on. No surprise that their eldest son inherited the family plantation. Since most of Silvester's kids were born before 1722 .. specifically the two of interest, Ephraim (c.1712) and Thomas (c.1715), we can conclude with a fair degree of assurance that they were born in King & Queen Co, VA. * On the 7/11/1734 there was a deed between Robert Ivey of Edgecombe District (now Nash Co, NC) and Jasper Stuart of Upper Parish, Bertie District. Witness was Silvester Estes. (from "Colonial Bertie County, NC, Deed Books A-H, p.152). Bertie Co, NC was formed in 1722. Some months ago I posted an article to the estes mail-list (and which appears in the latest issue of Estes Trails) concerning a John Estes of Hyde Co, NC. Well Bertie Co, NC is almost next door to Hyde Co, NC where there was a John Estes who died there in 1732 with 8 kids. This John is so far a mystery. Is there a connection?? Also, Sylvester's son, Abraham (b.1732) was in Pasquotank Co, NC in 1769 and this county is also a stone's throw from Bertie Co. * "John Spann and wife Mary, to Silvester Estes, 8/8/1741 160 acres in Upper Parish of Bertie County on NS Morattock River adjacent to John Glover, Thomas Bradford, "John Spanns former corner". Granted 8/4/1730. Witness: Jasper Stuart, jurat; David Rozar, Richard Cross, Auguest Court, 1741" (From "Colonial Bertie Co, NC", Deed Books A-H, p.167). This land was either part of that in the 1734 deed above or another part of the original 1730 grant to John Spanns. The description of the land is the same, same neighbours etc. Several counties were formed from Bertie so I'm not sure of the current location (Could someone with a good NC map check please?). It looks that Silvester moved to old Bertie Co, NC by 1722. At that date the oldest of his children were still minors, likely no older than the early teens. So they would've travelled there with him (unless they died before then). * On 30/7/1754 William Glover made his will in Northampton Co, NC. It was proved in the 1754 August Court. Silvester Eastis was a witness. ("Abstracts of NC Wills", Grimes, 1967, p.136). Northampton Co, NC was formed from Bertie Co, NC in 1741. In 1754 Sylvester was still in old Bertie Co. The Glover's appear in the earlier deed (1734), so I would assume that the land Sylvester bought in 1734 was in that part of bertie co that became Northampton Co, rather than that he moved. Northampton Co, NC is on the NC/VA border. Across the border in VA lie the counties of Greensville and Southampton (surprise, surprise!). Sylvester's son, Ephraim, was in Granville Co, NC by 1740. Thomas was in Orange Co, NC by the 1860's. Earlier? Do you have a date for when he arrived there, Joy? So .. the movement of the family looks like this: Silvester .. in K&Q Co, VA until at least 1722 .. to Bertie (now Northampton) Co, NC by 1734 .. in Northampton (Bertie) Co, NC 1754 . Ephraim .. born c.1712, K&Q Co, VA .. to Bertie Co, NC with father in 1720's .. to Granville Co, NC by 1740 when he married a native of that county . Thomas .. born c.1715, K&Q Co, VA .. to Bertie (Northampton) Co, NC with father in 1720's .. to Orange Co, NC by 1760 - location of marriage and birth of kids could be either Bertie or Orange Co. NC. . John .. died 1799, Orange Co, NC Sylvester's remaining sons, Elisha, Joel, Caleb & Aaron (I have no solid proof that they existed) presumably either died young or will one day be found having left traces somewhere in NC. P'haps accounting for some of the Estes who appear from nowhere in NC in the mid to late 1700's. Anyone got a missing Elisha Estes from the Carolina's? The John Estes who died in Hyde Co, NC in 1732 could _not_ be the son of Sylvester of that name .. at the earliest Sylvester's son John could've been born 1704/1705 (Abraham married 1784). There's no way he could've have had 8 children by 1732 .. not unless he had all twins and triplets. But who he was .. I have no idea. It _seems_ pretty certain that Abraham Sr's son, John, was not this one. cheers, David. -- I bless the day I met you and I thank God that he let you lay beside me for a moment that lives on and the good news is I'm better for the time we spent together and the bad news is you're gone. - "You're Gone", Diamond Rio DC2.D A+++!
