The most obvious candidate, given who was living in the area at the time and John Estes known to have had and used a middle name, is John Coleman Estes, son of Marshall Estes and Martha Yates (above). 1. Re: RE: [ESTES-L] John M. Estes of Yellville, AR
    2. BJ, Thanks for posting this. I had the dates, but they came from published histories of Yellville, Military records, and family historians. You asked about Ransom. I have a Ransom Estes (b. 1873) so it may be him. However, there are a number of descendants of John and Charlotte with the middle initial R. also in their names so I wouldn't say it is absolutely him, because of the possibility that one of the others could have gone by their middle name. In any case, I have a Ransom (b. 1873) as the son of John G. (Giddeon?) Estes and Missouri Wood. Here's where my research is different than the information on the Estes site. I have John G. (not Minton) Estes (b. 7 Jan 1830 Cannon County, TN d. 14 Feb 1873 Marion County, Ark) as the son of John Moses (not Minton) Estes (b. 28 Apr 1804 Greenville County, SC d. 13 Mar 1881 Yellville, Ark) and Charlotte Elkins (b. 7 Mar 1809 Tennessee d. 19 Jan 1908 Yellville). Both burried near the airport at Flippin, Arkansas. Charlotte (Charlotta) was the daughter of Murphy Elkins and Stacy Dillard. I'm also not sure where I got the middle name. My software does not let me differentiate sources between surnames, given names, and middle names. But, I have the sources listed and I'll have to go back and look at the hard copies individually to see where I got the middle name of Moses. If I'd have known there would be a question about it, I suppose I'd have made a note of it directly in my files. My differences don't seem to be dates, but the middle name of Minton. I am not saying that the middle name of Minton is incorrect, or impossible. In fact, there were some descendants of John and Charlotte with the name Minton (for instance James C. Estes and Mira Moore named a son Gilbert Minton). I just wanted to find out where it comes from so I could get my records correct. BTW, about the Gideon? middle name reference. I vaguely recall that a Gideon Thompson was John's brother-in-law (husband of Margaret) and they fought in the civil war together and went to prison camp together. Do you know anything about about Gideon Thompson and Margaret? I have that they had two children, but don't have any firm dates on Gideon Thompson or his parents. Obviously, he had some effect on the family as several other siblings named their children Gideon. I am mostly interested in the Barnhill, Lewis, Parker, Hutchinson, Wood and Bell connections as this is where my lines connect. Thanks again, for posting the tombstone records. I'll find it again. I do believe it was Minton tho. . .not Moses. This is John, Son of Gallant & Margaret, who came from Tennessee. Also alongside them is the tombstone of Ransom Estes, Born Sept 6, 1872, Died Dec. 10, 1904 Aged 32Y 3M 4D Blessed are the pure in heart for they are of the kingdom of heaven I've asked before. . .but does anybody know anything about Ransom? -----Original Message----- From: Marayong [mailto:dragon@triode.net.au] Sent: Tuesday, August 22, 2000 2:15 AM To: ESTES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ESTES-L] John M. Estes of Yellville, AR G'day folks, I've just gotten an email from April Heath which has again pointed out the discrepancy surrounding the date of death for John Minton Estes, born 1804, Greenville Co, SC, thence to Cannon Co, TN and eventually to Yellville, Marion Co, AR. (He's also been called John Moses Estes by some, tho' all the reliable evidence I've seen says he was Minton). The problem is that I have seen two different dates quoted for his death, namely 1857 and 1881 (and presumably they didn't take over 20 years to bury his corpse!). Does anyone have hard evidence that points to one or the other? By "hard" I mean a tombstone record (especially one you or someone you know has checked), a family bible etc. Different books on the region give one or the other date, so I'd rather not rely on them. The issue is somewhat complicated in that John had a son, John Minton Estes Jr. According to "A Reminiscent History of the Ozarks", by Ramfire (I think this is the right source .. April?), a John (Minton) Estes was a signer of the incorporation of Yellville in 1872. It has been presumed by others that it referred to John Sr, but could it have been John Jr? Before one jumps to the conclusion that the 1857 date is obviously the dod for John Sr and the 1881 date is that for John Jr, I also have a dod for John Jr of 1873. As I said, the situation is a tad complicated. :) I don't know where the 1857 and 1881 dates come from .. are they from tombstones, wills, family bibles or what? Or the 1873 date for John Jr for that matter. cheers, David. -- A stranger in a world I never made - Housman DC2.D A+++! L^ Pfwl Bfl Fo R+++! Ac+ J-- S++ Fr+++! 1. [ESTES-L] William L. Estes
    2. Dear Estes Researchers, I found another Estes to add to my line and was wondering if anyone knows who this is. Julia Chambliss (also Juliett Chambers), d/o John Chambliss and Margaret Dally Estes. Margaret was the daughter of Edmund Estes and Charlotty Golding. Julia married a man named C. Robert Sambo Cowsert. I recently learned that his parents were James Cowsert (b. 1830) and Missouri Settles. I also learned that when James died, Missouri remarried to a man named William L. Estes. Who is he? This family is from Illinois, before that came from Tennessee and before that North Carolina and before that Virginia. (all in one generation). I was wondering if anyone had any other Cowsert / Estes connections that could provide some answers. April My family tree is a few branches short! All help appreciated.
