    1. [ESTES-L] ESTES in Tullahoma, TN
    2. Hello Everyone: I have previously made posts to this list, but cannot access them due to a Gateway tech erasing my harddrive during a troubleshooting session. Therefore, if I am repeating a previous post, forgive me. Also--would like to hear from others who have corresponded with me so that I can update my address book. I spoke with my Great Aunt Alice yesterday and found out where my ESTES family was from. My Ggrandmother was Carrie Bell ESTES (birthdate unknown). Carrie died in Nashville, TN on 26FEB1936. She was married to John Henry Morgan McEWEN. Sometime after her death, John Henry married her sister, Lenice ESTES. Lenice died in Orlando, FL in the early 1990's. Carrie Bell ESTES had one sister (Lenice) and two (2) brothers--Ed and Ben ESTES. They were from the Tullahoma, TN area. I'm not certain of the county--perhaps, Bedford County? The children of John Henry and Carrie (ESTES) McEWEN were: Ollie "Irene" McEWEN - deceased Bertha Vernell McEWEN, 1915-1971 (my grandmother) Robert Franklin "Bob" McEWEN - d. Dickson Co., TN Mary "Alice" McEWEN - still living Lou Helen McEWEN - d. 12JUN1997, Nashville, TN Henry LeRoy "Buddy" McEWEN - deceased Jasper Odell "Bo" McEWEN, d. Dickson Co., TN Charles Daniel "Sonny" McEWEN - d. 1998, Watsonville, CA John Henry Morgan McEWEN, Jr. - deceased If anyone connects to this family--or can send me in the right direction, I would love to hear from you. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Robbie Meadows-O'Brien James Island, SC (from Nashville, TN)

    3. G'day again folks, Just one more reminder to the list about the Estes web-ring (ok, site-ring). It's up and running and has a handful of members now. If you've got a web site that has even slight references to the Estes family (which is a safe bet for subscribers to this list), then please think about joining. The more people who join up, the more valuable a resource it will be. Bravenet site-rings allow you to navigate from one site to the next and to also view a list of all sites in the ring. If you dont have a web page and would like one .. I've got spare web space if you'd like to put up a not excessively large web page(s). I'll even help write them. *feeling like I'm onnna limb here* To join, just go to my Estes page (or anyone who'se on the ring) at: http://xenon.triode.net.au/~dragon/ft/estes.html scroll down to the site-ring logo and click on "join". Then go thru' the registration process (it takes only a few minutes). Once I'm notified I'll let you know how to put the bravenet menu onto your page and that's all there is to it! If you have any questions etc, then don't hesitate to email me and ask. cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. B. S. Estes, born (probably) in the mid 1850's, in Hart Co, GA. He could be an uncle or even the father of your Thomas Lester. Thomas L. Estes was the son of Dr Micajah Estes, born 1804, Anderson Co, SC, died 1883 Hall Co, GA, and his second wife, Julia Headen (married 1854). This was a rather famous branch of the Estes family .. one of Thomas L's brothers was a senator, another a state court judge. Braches of this family were in Atlanta. I would suggest you try and get a copy of Thomas Lester Estes marriage certificate .. that may give some information on whom his father was. Also check for him in the 1891 Hart Co, GA census - he'll be listed as a minor with his parents, assuming the family had not moved from Hart Co, GA by then. If you can't find him in Hart Co, GA in 1891, I'd try the various counties that comprise Atlanta since he was there in 1910. I'd also check the 1910 census which will confirm his approximate year of birth and may give you additional information about him and his parents (such as the states in which they were born). cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. 3. I have a question, David. I have a website that has several major surnames. When I sign up with the site ring do I enter the main page URL of my website or should I enter only the ESTES page URL? I didn't want to mess this up. My website is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rhio/ and the Estes page is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rhio/EstesPg.htm Rhio

    1. [ESTES-L] Estes web-ring up and running
    2. Marayong
    3. G'day folks, I've got enuf interest from people to go ahead and set up the Estes web-ring. Actually with the ISP the ring is registered on, it's called a site-ring. Same thing. :) If you are interested in joining, the prerequistite is, naturally, that you have a pre-existing webpage that has some connection with Estes genealogy (I wont be picky .. as long as it's even slightly Estes-themed I'll ok it). If you dont have an estes web page, but plan on having one in the future, let me know when you have it up - no matter how rough. First you need to register your web site with Bravenet. Note that only the ring-master (that is, me) has to join Bravenet. Members of the ring do not have to join and the only details you need supply are your email address (which can be kept confidential, but I need it to approve your site), the title and address of the web site and a brief description and a list of keywords. The url for registering is (load the following and click "join"): http://pub23.bravenet.com/sitering/list.php?usernum=1934470708 (That's the homepage for the Estes web-ring .. err, site-ring *grin*). Alternatively you can go to my Estes web page (the main one) and click the "join" button on the site-ring menu. It's at the top of my main Estes web page. That will take you to the above url. Once you've filled in the details for registering, you will be asked to cut and paste some html script into your Estes web page. How you do that will depend on how you manage your web site. Until you've included the relevant code in your web page and put the updated version of the file on your web site I can't approve the page (a bravehart limitation). This of course means only html/htm/shmtl/etc pages can be linked. No text pages. You will then get an email notifing you that you've successfully registered and this email will also include the html code you need to paste in - just in case you didn't save it before. I will also be emailed and asked to approve the site. When I'm next online I will then check your site and, if the site-ring code is in place, I will be able to approve placement in the site-ring. The ring is now set up. I did a trial run and registered the web page on my Estes site that contains the list of contacts for Estes researchers .. and the whole process, including registration and inserting the html code into the web page, took less than 5 minutes. I will endeavour to approve sites the same day I get the application, but of course this will depend on how much time I have to be online .. if not one day then it will be the next. However, since I am in Australia, time zone's may make the delay appear to be several days so dont think I'm ignoring you! If you have any questions etc, then don't hesitate to email me and ask. And .. the more people we can get onto this ring, the more successful it'll be. It's not "my" ring .. it's _your's_! cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. B. S. Haldane DC2.D A+++! L^ Pfwl Bfl Fo R+++! 1. Re: [ESTES-L] estes web-ring
    2. Marayong
    3. G'day all, I've gotten a number of replies to this so I'm replying to the list to save time .. and for anyone who was interested but didn't reply (yet). For those wondering what a web ring is .. it's a system where webpages on different ISP's can be connected. Somewhere on your webpage (it presumes you have a web page by the way), the web-ring menu will appear with various options. Someone looking at your page can then click on the appropiate item in the menu and they will be redirected to another web-site which is listed on the ring. Either the next registered site or a random site, depending on which menu selection you make. Member's of the web-ring first register at the web-ring server (dead easy) and are told to include a bunch of java code in their web page ('tis just cut and paste). The web-ring administrator is then informed and he/she checks the webpage and activates it in the ring. Incidently, you need to have a webpage in which you can paste in this bit of code. Some of the ISP's which host genealogy web pages wont allow this - you are stuck with the format they have. If you want to see what such a web-ring looks like, you can have a look at my Powell webpage, which has a web-ring link at the end. The url is: http://xenon.triode.net.au/~dragon/ft/powell.html If there's enuf interest to go ahead with the web-ring, it'll be using the same web-ring server as the Powell web-ring (bravenet). There are others, including the now defunct "Web Ring" which was recently aquired by yahoo .. and as soon as yahoo started "improving" it, the whole system collapsed and is still not working properly. If there's not enuf interest to warrant all the hassle of setting up a web-ring, I'll still go ahead and set up a simplified version on my own site. So far I've got 6 nibbles, one of whom doesn't have a web page at the moment. I've got 23 (plus mine) listed on my web-site "other estes web pages" so I know there's plenty of others out there!! cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. 3. G'day folks, A genealogy web ring I'm on has just moved to a new site and it got me to thinking about a similar ring for the Estes family. I've not heard of an Estes web-ring, so I imagine there ain't no such critter currently. If people are interested in the idea (and have an estes web page), please email me. If there's enuf interest, I'll go ahead and create the ring (and administer it). If someone out there knows of an existing Estes web-ring, please let me know that .. I'd like to join in that case. :) BTW, if you know any Estes researchers who're not on the Estes list and might be interested, please forward this to them. cheers, David. <dragon@triode.net.au> -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. 2. Hi to all: With 272 subscribers to this list and several new ones, I thought it important to repeat the following message: Just a note of warning. Althought Rootsweb. has spam filters up, the spammers are getting smarter and several list have been hit with several spam messages. Please be aware, I am monitering the mailing list. I will take immedate steps to have the spammer reported. Please, do not reply to the mailing list. I'm already working Rootsweb to try to control this. Please, do not reply to the spammer. they will only get your "live" address and you will recieve twice the amount of spam If you purchase whatever they are selling, you are only paying them to spam more and more. 1. [ESTES-L] Message from the listowner about SPAM....
    2. Hi to all: Rootsweb has in place a "spam blocker" however you need to be aware that spammers are getting smarter everyday. Just tonight as you will note in your messages we had one spammer join both the List and the Disgest version and put spam through the list. I have unsubscribed him from both list and put him on a permanent reject notice. This will only stop him for a little while, until he can figure out something else. The best thing you can do is 1. DON"T email the list about the spam. The spammer don't care and your messages will only take up room on other subscribers computers.. and some people have to pay by the minute so each message cost them to down load. 2. If you want to complain, complain to the spammer personally... but please be aware that all you are doing when you do that, is giving them a working email address they can harass. NOTE: I have contacted rootsweb about this person and hopefully they can help. PLEASE.... NO MAIL ON THE LIST ABOUT THIS. I am doing the best I can to protect our research enviroment. Sorry Annette

I do have a few Estes/Wheeler marriages, but I'd really need to know when and where the two families connected (if they did) before I could work out where the link is. cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. 3. ubject: [OHHAMILT] ESTES/Cincinnati from 1927-1959 Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 18:47:45 -0700 From: "Christine M. Smth" <cmsmith@iserve.net> To: OHHAMILT-L@rootsweb.com Posted on: Hamilton County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Hamilton/2610 Surname: ------------------------- My grandfather was John Will Estes, of Madison County, Kentucky, who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in late 1926. He stayed with his cousin, Willie Carpenter and his family at first. His wife and five children remained in Kentucky until early 1927, when they got tired of waiting to be sent for and also went to Cincinnati. Many years later, when my brother was a young man, my grandfather told him that while he was alone in the city he had fathered a child. He had taken care of her, and according to my mother she came to my grandfather's funeral in 1959. A check of his funeral visitation book lists several unknowns, but I haven't been able to trace any of them. I know she would have been born sometime in 1927 and that her mother had red hair. I do not know if she carried his last name or not. She could well still be alive, and I would love to find her. All leads welcome.
