    3. G'day folks, I got two queries today on the same chap .. Warfield Estes. Born 1821, Adair Co, KY. Died 1897, same. Married Mary Ann McKinney (that name sounds familiar!), 1840, Adair Co, KY. Kids: John Will, james W, Granville, mary Jain, Elizabeth, Josephine, infant, Susan josephine, Warfield Jr. Anyone heard of this chap? I don't have him in my files. One of the queries said they _thought_ his father was John Y Estes, b.1792 (whoever that was), another says Warfield's father was William, born c.1786. Not sure which William that is s'posed to be. cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. B. S. Haldane DC2.D A+++! 3. I also show James Estes to be the son of John and Sarah "Sally" (Bennett) Estes of Granville Co., NC. According to a letter from the Pension Office dated Dec 15, 1873, on March 10, 1852, land grant #31575 was issued and sent to James Estes, in Carthage, TN, for his service in the NC Military, in the War of 1812. There is a certificate of receipt for this bounty land from James Estes stating he was a resident of Smith Co., TN. Later, he moved his family to Dekalb Co., TN. At least three of James' siblings also went to TN, Thomas Estes who married Rosina Smith and settled in Gibson Co., TN, John B. Estes who married Elizabeth J. Nevil and settled in McNairy Co., TN and Sarah "Sally" Estes who married Thomas J. Pruett. I have more info on the parents and siblings of James Estes, if your interested. 1. [ESTES-L] Mary Jane Estes
    2. Marayong
    3. G'day folks, Anyone able to shed light on this lass? Thanks, David. Subject: Mary Jane Estes From: Mjgerman123@cs.com Hello, Your address was passed along to me by an Estes researcher. I am looking for parents of Mary Jane Estes, born 07 June 1864 in Illinois. She married Amos High. I recently found a marriage in the FamilySearch I.G.I. for an Amos High and Jennie Estes, Oct 1, 1884 in Lancaster, NE. As the first child of Amos and Mary Jane was born in Lincoln, Lancaster Co, NE on 11 Nov 1887, I feel that marriage may be this couple. Family story says her father's name was Robert and mother's name was Elizabeth. In the 1910 census, Mary Jane says both parents born in Kentucky. Amos and Mary Jane returned to his home town in Whiteside Co, IL by 1893 where their second child was born and still there in 1900 when their third and last child was born. They were in Flandreau, SD in the 1910 census. Amos died in Verdi, MN 1926 and Mary Jane died in Lake Benton, MN 1943. Both are buried in Flandreau, SD. I have searched for her parents with no results. Can't connect in Illinois or Nebraska. Was wondering if you have any information on this family. I will appreciate any help you can give me. Linda German

    1. [ESTES-L] Estes-Hockensmith's of Scott Co, KY
    2. Marayong
    3. G'day Sallie, I finally realised where I'd come across the Estes-Hockensmith connection .. I spent some time living in Frankfort, KY and checked out the Scott Co, KY Hist. Soc. records and also visited some of the county's cemeteries. I also searched the Estes mail-list archive and the following is a compilation of what's appeared. Maybe some of it will help you (or someone else on the estes list since I'm cc'ing this there). * January 1998; Jennifer Black <jenniferblack@fuse.net> I am trying to find out any information on the line of Thomas H. Estes b. Spottsylvania County 1785 d. Owen County, KY 1862. Lived most of his life in Scott County, KY. My line of Estes' are from Scott County, KY but haven't connected them as of yet. My ggrandfather William H. Estes is from Scott County. He was born ca.1877. He married twice 1. to Lillie Mae McLain/McLean b. 1892 d. 1939. He married 2. to a Maggie?. * May 1999; Connie Welch <lostdove@geocities.com> Here is another bio from the Kentucky Biography list. URL for the web site is http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/Bios #3166: History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison and Nicholas Counties, KY, ed. by William Henry Perrin, O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, 1882. p.627. [Scott Co, Stamping Ground Precinct] SAMUEL ESTES, farmer, P.O. Stamping Ground, is a native of Scott County, and the son of William and Mary (Hockensmith) Estes. William was born in Virginia, emigrated to Scott County, where he followed the occupation of farming, and died in 1855. Mary, the mother of our subject, was born in Scott County, and died in October, 1865. They were the parents of thirteen children, twelve of whom are still living, of whom is our subject, who was born Sept. 30, 1830. He received his education from the common schools of his native county, and on June 21, 1855, in Franklin County, he married Miss Letitia Owens, who was born in Franklin County, April 5, 1836. She is the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Trout) Owens, who are natives of Kentucky. Mr. Estes has during his life followed the occupation of farming, and is now the owner of 135 acres of land. By his marriage he has had eleven children, eight of whom are now living, viz: John W., Thomas H., Laura, William D., Catharine, Betsey, Kate and Addie. Himself and family are members of the Baptist Church. He is a member of the A.F. and A.M., Scott Lodge No. 203, at Stamping Ground. He is a Democrat. * August 1999; Gene Divine <aedreddivine@hcnews.com> Amelia (or Permelia) ESTES, (b.1789,VA, d.1859 Scott Co, KY). Married before 1807, Bourbon Co, KY, to Martin BRAMBLET, (b.1784,VA, d.1860 Scott Co, KY). They had 11 children: HUGH (b.1807 Bourbon Co, KY); LEANNA (b.1809 Bourbon Co, KY); ROBERT E (b.1810 Scott Co, KY); MARTIN P. (b.1812); THOMAS J. (b.1818); REUBEN (b.1822); CATHERINE J. (b.1822); MILDRED (b.1824); JOHN G. (b.1825); JONAS W. (b.1828); MARY ANN (b.1832). And finally my item: * August 1998, David Powell. From: "A History of Scott County as Told by Selected Buildings", Ann Bolton Bevins, Georgetown, KY, 3rd edition, 1989. ESTES HOUSE: William Estes, a Virginian, married a girl from the Stamping Ground area and settled down to increase his estate, a fact which was shown at his death in 1855. For Mary Hockensmith and William Estes left a large estate to a large family. About 335 acres were divided among the heirs in 1856. William Estes' purchases on record were made from Eppes Green in 1838, from Obed and Elizabeth Calvert, and from Joseph and Elizabeth Betts in 1829. Boundaries of the aquisitions cannot be determined due to the burned deeds. The log house for many years was the home of Mrs Burton Claxton and her family. Mrs. Claxton was an Estes descendent. Numerous alterations and an addition mark the use of the house by many generations. Sources: Perrin, 627. The article didn't give any details on where the house was/is, tho' I suspect it was on Cedar Ridge Road, where most of the county's Estes are buried. From: "Gone, Forgotten, Now Remembered: Scott County, Kentucky Cemeteries", published by the Scott Co. Genealogical Society, Georgetown, KY, 1992. Cedar Grove Cemetery, Cedar Road. 3. G'day Judy, Thanks for your reply. I finally realised where I'd come across teh Estes-Hockensmith connection .. I spent some time living in Frankfort, KY and checked out the Scott Co, KY, Hist. Soc. records and also visited some of the county's cemeteries. Even got some foto's buried somewhere of Estes-Hockensmith-Owen's graves. I posted a list of the Estes burials in Scott Co, KY to the estes list some time back in 98. Just been trying to find a copy of it, but I'm quickly running out of places to look. *grumbles* I gave up and searched the rootsweb archive .. and found it. :) And saved a copy to my 'puter. Not much on Scott Co, KY: June 1997, a forward originating with the same person who posted about Thomas below. Details not as far back. Jan 1998 there was a post re Thomas Estes b.1785, Spots Co VA and died 1862, Owen Co, KY. Spent most of his life in Scott Co, KY August 1998 I posted info from the Scott Co hist soc including cemetery records for the county and a bio on William Estes and Mary Hockensmith. August 1998 there was a post from you (Judy) mentioning Scott Co. May 1999 Connie posted a bio on a son of William and mary (Hockensmith). August 1999 there was a query re Amelia or Permelia Estes, b.1789, VA. Married martin bramlet, 1807, Bourbon Co, KY. Both died Scott Co, KY. I'll compile the above and post to the list and the lady who contacted me. cheers, David. -- The universe is not only queerer that we imagine, it is queerer than we *can* imagine - J. B. S. Just a quick note for Hiram Estes researchers .. this chap is from the northern line .. the new england estes. I'm fairly sure he's listed in Charles Estes 1894 book. I'm not at home so I can't confirm in my files. He's not connected with the Hiram Estes of MO etc. cheers, David.

I descend from their daughter Margaret Elizabeth, b. 19 Aug. 1804, who on 15 Oct. 1822 married George Harden, one of twin sons born in 1796 to John Harden, Rev. War soldier, and his wife Hannah Boyd.
