Recorders of Uttlesford History http://www.recordinguttlesfordhistory.org.uk/index.html have transcribed this as "glover" The Latin term for "glover" is chirotherarus which is a longer word than the one in the register. However, it is definitely "chir?th" so possibly an abbreviation. It's a long way from lawyer to glover but, in those days, who knows? Hope this helps Jane

Jane, I believe you are absolutely correct.  There were 2 William Nightingales at this time and one could well have been a glover.  And I absolutely believe the word is the Latin abbreviation for glover.  Appreciate the add'l site and appreciate your taking the time to help me.
