    3. Hi Mike, Maybe your Henry W. West was on a foreign registered ship at sea in 1911 and so would not be enumerated. Only Foreign registered ships that were in a British ports on census night were enumerated in the England and Wales census, as I understand it, they would be considered to be in British Territory. Foreign ships at sea would not be in British waters and so nothing to do with the English/Welsh census, even if they had British crew members on board. Harwich today is a busy international port and probably was visited by many foreign ships back in 1911, henry could have signed on for a voyage on such a vessel. If he signed on a foreign registered ship that left port before census night came round then he would not be included in the census. I tried searching for just the surname Smith and used the word Vessels in the civil parish box, as you would do in earlier census when looking for men on board ships. I left all other boxes empty. Nothing came up, surely there would have been at least 1 man called smith on board a ship in 1911. I wonder if the vessels schedules have not been included in the online 1911 census on Ancestry. I have not tried this search on FMP so cannot say about that one. The listing of Counties etc. on Ancestry for the 1911 includes the Royal Navy & Military but there is no tab for ships at sea or Miscellaneous as you might find on earlier census County listings. I couldn't turn up the 1901 census entry where you found Henry on an unknown vessel. Have you found Henry in the 1891 census? I found a likely entry where Henry is shown living at Harwich, he is single aged 22 occ. Mariner born Harwich parents are William and Phoebe, they have a few children besides Henry, Maud, Watty)(?). Arthur, Flory, Minnie. The ref. for this entry is RG12 piece 1402 folio 139 page 8 if you want to take a look at it. Sorry I couldn't help to find Henry in 1911, but maybe he was on a foreign registered ship at sea and you will never find him in the 1911 census in that case. Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<I have a small problem, related to Essex (just), but directly related to searching Ancestry.co.uk. A WEST family lived in Harwich. Mother + kids are found at 44 Fernlea Rd, Harwich. Annie Elizabeth WEST gives her occupation as 'Husband at sea'. Given past experience with her husband (Henry William WEST), this comes as no surprise. How he ever found time to get a family, I don't know! He always seems to have been at sea! So. The question. How do I find this salty sea dog in the 1911 census when he's on an unknown vessel? My normal searching tricks have paid no dividend, and I've run out of ideas (short of browsing thousands of images) as to how to find him. What I know. Henry William WEST. Born towards the end of 1868 in Harwich. Married Annie Elizabeth LAMBERT around March 1894 in Harwich. What else is needed? In 1901 he was enumerated on an unknown vessel.>>

    3. Henry William West born Harwich about 1868 does not appear on the National Archives register of Seamen (Royal Navy). Therefore is it highly probably that he was in the Merchant Navy. The Merchant Navy records were given? sold? to the University of Newfoundland because the NA were threatening to destroy them. I have RN seamen in my extended family, who may have joined the Merchant Service after RN service, so I have the same problem as you have. 3. About a dozen years ago, the Uni of Newfoundland had a campus in Harlow, Essex, UK. I sometimes drove the coach for their summer daytrips. No idea whether it's still there, or if this info helps in any way though. Good luck, Lawrence Greenall.
