James Pressey) Hello Listers. Has anyone else been successful in finding Records for their family MASTER MARINER who worked for the War Department in both World Wars. The Freedom of Information Act does not seem to allow for this kind of information. Or, so I have been told. Kind regards. April.
Hello April It would depend who the individual worked for. I know that MI6 records fall outside the scope of the freedom of information but many other war office departments have released many details to the National Archives. Do you have any papers or information which could indicate the department? The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Records and Historical Department may be able to direct you further. Their address is: Old Admiralty Building, Whitehall, London SW1A 2PA. April, I don't think you need an FOI request as these documents tend to be publically available now. Although there may be some caveats around WW2 as some of those who served are still alive so you may need to show a connection to the person whose records you are looking for. That said, I'm pretty sure you can apply for their service records via the GRO in Kew. Check the website but I'm pretty sure you can see if they have anything for your person and then either order the records they have and download them online (not always available) or get copies from the archives there. I think Findmypast also has some information about master mariners/ merchant seaman who served, although that will probably give you the Kew reference information rather than the actual records. But again it confirms if there are any records. The other thing to do is there is a master mariner mailing list on Rootsweb, post a request there with a few more details about what you are looking for and someone may be able to help in more detail. There is also a Master Mariner association based in London I think, so you could try contacting them to see what they recommend. Another thing you could do is to join the mariner mailing list, this list deals only with ships and the men who sailed them-Royal Navy & Merchant ships and Mariner. Go to the mariners website at www.mariners-l.co.uk There you will see a list of subjects & countries to choose from including the Mailing List. I found the listers very helpful when I was tracing my 3 master mariners and was given lots of details about most of the ships they sailed on over their times at sea. The Ancestry site has a lot of Master Mariner & Mates certificates, with the testimonials that go with them, but I am not sure how far forward in time these come up to. They may not contain men who would have been at sea during the 2 World Wars. Do you have anything with his master mariners certificate number on at all? If so then you could search for him with that number on the Ancestry site to see if anything comes up.
