    1. [Ess] The diary of Joseph Thomas 1828-1831
    2. MICHAEL DANIELS
    3. Hello Essex and Suffolk listers   Your East Anglian forebears?.   Wondering if someone might recognise names  in their family tree complimentary to those in a journal that was written some hundred and eighty years ago.     I am listing this data copied from my partial transcription of the day to day entries in an old diary that has come our way, this valuable document kindly made available to us by its present owner.   In 1757, one Joseph Thomas was born in Somersham, Suffolk during the last years of the reign of George 11. Perhaps early in his marriage he moved to Thorpe-le-Soken in the north-east of Essex . There he became a teacher and resided in this village for over fifty years.      No doubt being of a learned disposition he enjoyed writing and keeping a daily account of his life and all that happened in times so different from what we know today. The diary that we can now examine does not record much of great importance, just contains mention of local events, the planting and harvesting of crops often much determined by the weather at that time.  He tells of his week to week activities, regular church attendance on Sunday and his travels riding his pony, or horse-drawn gigg and sometimes using the public transport of the day for longer journeys - the stage coach.   What possibly may be more relevant for rootsweb subscribers are those names.   For most I just give a surname and this usually applies to males, but there are items referring to special occasions, marriages and certainly deaths and burials in the village and those occurring in nearby communities.   Also I have copied down Joseph's weather notes and further extracted any item I felt of greater general interest on wider topics of the day. Ask if you would like to have a view of these sent off list.   The diary commenced in the June of 1828 and ended quite abruptly in 1831 when the writer was in his seventy-fourth year, often by then in poor health.   Of course feed back would be welcomed.   Any names that appear of a positive nature, especially so. And in respect of Joseph Thomas, we still would like to ascertain the actual date of his demise, where he and his wife were buried - perhaps in Suffolk, not apparently in Thorpe!  We also vitally need his wife's maiden name.  Frustratingly these details still allude us, maybe someone can help.   Michael in Holland-on-Sea , Essex about five miles from Thorpe le Soken   Names list:   1828   June          Sawyer.   July           Platten, Jaynes, Munnings, Moss of Oakley, Harrison, Rolf of Ramsey, Thompson of Bentley, King, Denning, Stone, Thorn of Colchester, Platt                  of Chelmsford, Clapham, Hardy, Rev Adeney, Wilson, Benneworth.   August      Cordon, Brooks, Griggs, Rev Burgess, Thompson of Holland, Holmes, Lucas of Holland, Tyler, Osmond, Nichols, Cook, Frost, Simpson,                   Meadows of Ipswich, Elmer.   Sept.         Francis of Mendlesham, Long of Ipswich, White of Ipswich.
