Hi all, Thanks for your kind replies. There's hope then that one particular couple may have married after all in the family tree I am researching. We always assumed that they didn't marry because no marriage can be found on Free BMD - although on the birth certificates of their children the mother is in the married name with maiden name mentioned. Wish we could find the marriage. It would help a lot to find out more about them! Regards Diana

They probably did marry but if they didn't, mum could have been telling porkies by pretending to be married when she wasn't. If she was confident enough, the registrar wouldn't question what he was being told, especially if he didn't know the family well or at all. Have you looked on FreeBMD for the mother's marriage entry? It's possible that they transcribed her entry but not the groom's or he's been omitted from the GRO index. I had a fairly recent example of just that. One of my husband's cousins wasn't listed in the marriage index but his wife was. She was divorced so their children had her maiden name listed. Thankfully she was listed under both her maiden and former married names enabling me to find her previous marriage as well :))

Not all FreeBMD transcriptions are accurate. Transcribers are only human and have trouble reading handwritten or even typed images. The names might have been transcribed incorrectly. There are many opportunities for transcription errors to be made between the event being originally registered and it winding up on an image from the GRO. A bit of creative lateral thinking might be required to find your missing couple. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg.
