Gentlemen, I've just been sent a series of brickwalls that a distant relation has encountered. There's about five, and they range across the country from Dorset to Norfolk, via Kentish Town. I'd rather not post each one to the appropriate county list as I'll be forever subscribing and unsubscribing to the things. Would it be acceptable if, just this once, in the hope of general advice I posted them on the one county list I do regularly frequent, or do you think that's too likely to create precedents, problems? I realise I may get better advice on specific lists, but I'm not sure I have the time to go through the mall... Your advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Adrian

Hi Adrian, Probably best to ask the List Admin if it's acceptable or not (email address is at the bottom of each posting). IMHO, if you and your rellie have both come to brick walls by normal routes then you're likely to need some local knowledge to break them down, which really means subscribing to the individual area and/or surname lists for a short while. Having said that, I'd be inclined to say "Go for it" as it's fairly quiet here lately, but I'm not presuming to speak for the rest of the list, and others may disagree. Hi Adrian As Jan said, it may be that you will be indulged at this festive season. If so, could I suggest you preface your multi post with a firmly worded reminder that responders should not click "reply to all" unless they are themselves subscribed to all the lists, but to edit the "to" field so that only the list(s) they are subscribed to remain? This should avoid the real nuisance of cross-posting - rejection of messages sent inadvertently by non-subscribers. If they are you say Brick walls, then it is a good chance that general info from Essex researchers will not prove fruitfull. No-one said that family history was quick and easy so if you really want some help solving your problems, you may well be better off joining the local lists.
