I am going to the conference in Colchester at the end of August. One of the free days, my colleague and I are going to attempt to travel over to Chelmsford and Galleywood Common to "walk" the land that my ancestors lived on. My problem is that we will be on foot (per se) and will be relying on the buses to get us to and from Chelmsford. Hi Margo _www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk_ (http://www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk) is one site. This suggests you travel between Colchester and Chelmsford by train, but as the bus station is opposite the railway station you should be OK. The journey between Colchester and Chelmsford takes quite a long time by service bus, but the train journey is much more expensive - it's up to you! Essex County Council at _www.essexcc.gov.uk/microsites/travel/public.htm_ (http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/microsites/travel/public.htm) has links to bus and rail services in the county (as well as to Traveline [above]) but doesn't try to integrate them. Don't forget to check the journey back as well. many of the bus services are few and far between and they may finish early in the afternoon - much as though I think you will enjoy the experience of walking round Essex (despite the current unseasonable rainy days), I wouldn't want you to be stranded on the Common overnight!
