    3. Hi Vicky, For new software, can I recommend Brother's Keeper? It has been around for ever and keeps on improving. And so that you can try before you buy, it is shareware. As for the data from the old software, does it have an export facility. Preferably in GEDCOM format? Nearly all modern software will import this format. If not, does it have a backup option? Sometimes backup files are just plain text files that can be manipulated in Access or Excel. And it is possible that some software will restore Personal Roots Deluxe backups as an upgrade path, but BK won't.     3. Steve has a good point - try making a backup copy of your unopenable data file, then rename its extension to ".txt" and then see if Notepad can display its contents. Alternatively, do a Google on the file's extension followed by the phrase "file extension" and with luck you'll find out what other programs can open the native files.
