Hi Robert There is a Samuel Stephen Swain born during the Sept quarter of 1865 in the Maidstone registration district (Ref 2a 524). This is the only entry for anyone of that name between 1860 and 1875. If you go to http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/maidstone.html you will see that there are many villages in the Maidstone district that he could have been born in so you will need to get the certificate to see just where it is. If you then google "Cityark" and go to the Medway Archives you will find that many of the parishes in the Medway area are available on line. The actual pages of the registers have been digitised and are availble there to search free of charge. This is an ongoing project for that area. It is possible that some of the villages in the Maidstone district are covered under the Medway Archives, I haven't cross-referenced the sites, but you never know your luck.
