I am sorry I cannot help you on this query, David, but I too have a query on Stambourne and wonder if there is anyone onlist who could help. There doesn't seem to be a lot about Stambourne on Google although History House does have a little bit: http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexs19a.html I have been trying to identify a property that was left to an ancestor - John Bunting - that looks like 'Potters[field]' or even 'Poitersfield' in a1723 will? On the 1851 census I have found an area called 'Pitiful Wood' and the 'description of the enumeration district' for 1851, 1861, includes 'Pitifuls' which seems to indicate an area, a farm or a house so called but I can't find anything on google. There are a family of Ag labs living in 'Pitiful cottage' in 1861 [not Buntings!]. There are Buntons on all census returns from1841 to 1901 - I haven't yet checked the PRs yet but think that possibly these are descended from my Bunting as that is a common variation on the name.
