    3. Contact the local historical soc for that area; they'll be bound to have an interest in field names! I can't find anything for Stambourne itself, though neighbouring Ridgewell has a hist soc - contact details at http://www.ridgewellvillage.co.uk/html/info.html See also p13 of this PDF file, for an insigth into the soc's activities: http://www.ridgewellvillage.co.uk/Newsletter_48.pdf Another avenue, if you've got loads of patience, is to go through both the court rolls and quarter sessions records for that period. You should hit gold sooner or later (probably later). Tithe awards might help too, despite their different period. A lot of quarter sessions transcripts are now online in SEAX (well done ERO, by the way). And wasn't there an Essex place names recording project in action somewhere? Ah yes - yer 'tiz: http://www.essex.ac.uk/history/esah/essexplacenames/ "A valuable database of over 55,000 field- and place-names for archaeologists and planning officers determining potential and actual sites of historic and archaeological interest." But I couldn't check it out as the server is down. No-one awake yet to turn it on, I suppose. Would fit in with the 'Pitiful' name. The 'Potterfield' is from a reading of a very faint 1723 will, but it could equally be 'Poitton' - and the 'Pitiful' in 18551 was the nearest I could get. Nothing on SEAX archives came near either. Just hoped someone onlist might have an idea! 3. Thank you very much for all this information Lawrence and I will certainly follow it up. I am hoping that the PRs may provide some information, I have searched SEAX archives online but putting in variations of the name don't bring up anything and putting in 'Stambourne' brings up plenty but I get distracted searching...... If I get a definate 'hint' from your links or the PRs I can then try again on the archives more specifically and if anything arises hopefully order specfic documents. Thanks again. Best wishes, Gwyn > Contact the local historical soc for that area; they'll be bound to have > an interest in field names! >> > http://www.ridgewellvillage.co.uk/html/info.html > > See also p13 of this PDF file, for an insigth into the soc's activities: > > http://www.ridgewellvillage.co.uk/Newsletter_48.pdf > http://www.essex.ac.uk/history/esah/essexplacenames/ > -- > Gwyn Bailey OPC for Springfield, Essex
