    3. Hello List One of my rellies, Lillian Frances EARLY, married Ernest Edward PIKE in Romford, Essex, Sept Q 1904. Ernest PIKE was a Solicitor's Clerk. I believe he was in the Coldstream Guards during WW1 and was killed in action. Lillian married Alexander NORMAN, Dec Q 1918, in Rochford, Essex. And that's it! That's all I have. Does anyone have info on the PIKE and NORMAN families? What became of Lillian NORMAN? Were there children from either of her marriages? Hate these loose ends! Best wishes Frank South Africa

    3. Hi Frank, I can't find a mention of E.E PIKE on the CWCG site, but have found three births, mothers's maiden name EARLY, father's NORMAN. Mabel D. Mar Q 1920 Rochford, Essex Beryl R. Mar Q 1927, Orsett, Essex Lilian F. Mar Q 1928 Orsett, Essex. Then last two look a bit close togather, but the first could have been registered in the very beginning of the quarter, and I would be reasonably certain that the Lilian F. was yours. - Barbara

    3. Hello Frank Things are never as simple as they seem! Ancestry has an image of the medal rolls for WW1 which shows that Edward Ernest Pike was indeed a member of the Coldstream Guards (I'll sent you the image separately), and he joined on 9 Dec 1915, and was discharged on 22 Feb 1918 - I suspect he was seriously wounded. The reason for his discharge is "Army Order 265 of 1917 para 2.b.i" A Google search led me to http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=66405ecaa206cbf82dec5c56013fe1dc&topic=321291.0 which refers to "the award of the Silver War Badge for being discharged due to illness or injury while serving at home or abroad." So it would seem that Edward wasn't killed in action - but might well have died later as a result of injuries. However there is no entry for his death during 1918 (unless he died abroad, or in Scotland) You say that he married Lillian Early in 1904. Do you have the certificate, or are you assuming they married because there is a FreeBMD entry? I ask because there is a marriage in Dec 1918 for Alexander Norman - but his bride is identified as Lillian EARLY. I would have expected her to be identified as PIKE. Although it is possible, it does seem unlikely that the Mrs Norman whose maiden name was Early who gave birth as late as 1928 could have been previously married in 1904. Especially since there are no births recorded after 1912 for a Mrs Pike, nee Early on FreeBMD. Nor can I find a likely Lillian in the 1901 census, nor any trace of her birth on FreeBMD, unless she is the girl aged listed in Dagenham with her mother, as both were born in Scotland. From Wikipedia it seems that the Coldstream Guards had a specific recruiting area - so it may be that Edward Pike was not a native of the South Essex area. Happy to help further.
