Hello James, I think that we must be related. My great grandfather was FREDERICK WURTEMBERGER and he married ELIZA DAVEY. They had 8 children, one of them being my grandmother, PHOEBE MARIA, who lived for a while at Buckhurst Hill. During W.W.1 the family changed their name to DAVEY as there was some hostility towards anyone with German origins. Although I have the names of the 8 children there is not a HENRY CHARLES, so have you any idea what relationship he can be? FREDERICK died in Bow in 1926. There are so many similarities that I feel that we musr be talking about the same family. I would be very interested to hear anything else that you know about this family. Regards, Rosemary in Waltham Abbey. ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Duly" <James.Duly@btinternet.com> To: <ESSEX-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 09, 2001 3:49 PM Subject: WURTEMBERGER > A big thank you to all of you who gave to me advice when searching for WURTEMBERGER > The story so far is that it was G Grandfather WURTEMBERGER that came to England from Germany, he had a son Henry Charles who was born in England. Henry Charles opened a shop (believed in Bow), during WW1 he was attacked & the shop destroyed by a mob who took a dislike to the name so he changed his name to DAVEY and moved to Buckhurst Hill/Chigwell area where he set up business as a seed merchant. He eventually sold the business and retired to Saffron Walden where he died. He is buried in Saffron Walden Cemetery as Henry Charles DAVEY. I tried to find the grave but without success, it being a Sunday the office was closed so there was no one to ask. > > ______________________________
