Hi I'm new to the Essex list - I am researching my Essex based family called Gunfield who lived around St Osyth. I'm very stuck with George Gunfield b. 1824. I can find him in the 1851 census living in Great Bentley with his wife Martha (Ives), his sons George, Abraham, Frederick and William and his sister in law Emily Ives but I can't find him before that. Would be grateful for any info so that I can get back o the previous generation Thanks Lynne Hughson

1841 census. There is a George, transcribed as GLANFIELD in High Street Chelmsford (District 1). The transcription looks a bit iffy, I see an "L" in there, but also the next letter looks like a "U". He is aged 24 and born in Essex, an apprentice chemist. Piece 325. Book 8. Folio 14. Page #22. Hi Lynne The safest and most direct route back to the previous generation would be via George and Martha's marriage certificate (Q4 1842, Tendring Vol 12 page 475). Lynne, In the 1841 Census there are a John and Ann Gunfield living in Thorrington, born respectively 1799 and 1800 in Essex. These seem possible candidates for George's parents. It might be worth checking the Thorrington baptism registers if you haven't done so already. Have you got George and Martha's marriage register entry/marriage certificate? Does it give any clues as to where he was living at the time of the marriage? What about the witnesses - could they be his parents/brothers/sisters/other relatives? It looks suspiciously as if the Gunfields/Ganfields might have come originally from Somerset as most of the other 1841and 1851 Census entries are from there. One possibility might be to check if there was a large landowner in Tendring in the 1750/1850 period that also owned land in Somerset.
