Dear Rob, I hope that this is of help. The Chelmsford Chronicle for March 16th 1798 reports; at our Assizes, which ended on Friday last (9th) Sam.James the Younger , for stealing a £10 bank note and six shillings out of a bureau . Death recorded. He was not left for execution by the Judge (Baron Hotham?) so the likelihood was that he was transported, either to Van Diemens Land, to other parts of Australia, or to Bermuda. The value of being in a family history society is often there are links in Australia you can ask for help. Further research at the National Archive might be useful. ASSI contains most indictments at Assizes (on velum) and you might find the place of offence. CO also contains lists of convicts on their way to transportation. Hulks like Justicia and Censor also held prisoners for years before they were transported, some even found jobs on board the hulks. If I go to the Essex Record Office within the next week I will have a look for the 1797 Assize. The people that I am interested in are: 1. Simon MOULDS (or MOULD/MOLD/MOLE) who was tried at the Essex Chelmsford Assizes on the 8th or 9th of March 1797. 2. Samuel JAMES who was committed on 27th Nov 1797 and believed to have been tried at the Essex Lent Assizes 1798. Thank you very much.
