Dear List and Peter LAYZELL, Hear, hear! I think credit goes to ERO for putting anything online, at a time when other places around the country (eg. Hammersmith & Fulham) have been threatening to actually close their Records Offices. I was interested to see that one of the messages on the list was from someone researching an ancestor in Northfleet, Kent. Stephen Dixon, the present archivist at Chelmsford, moved there from Medway Local Studies in Kent, where he made his mark by putting digital images of their holdings of parish registers online - and accessible without charge. I have traced Northfleet and neighbouring ancestors in this way. He moved to ERO in Chelmsford and successfully got this project started there too. I think those of us with ancestors in Kent and Essex are indebted to this man. We have to pay Ancestry, Findmypast and other organisations large subscriptions to get any similar service for other parts of the country.
