HI David, Go to the entry in the IGI and scroll down the page past the details of the baptism or marriage and you should see a line entitled Messages. Not all entries have such a line nor a batch number, in that case beware it is most likely a patron submission. I have just been to the IGI and found that entry for Samuel Smith born "about" 1731 of Great Waltham. The line of Messages says that this was a "Record Submitted by a member of the LDS church. The fact that it says birth About 1731 means that patron did not know that Samuel was definitely born in 1731 but is guessing. Beware of such entries, the minute you see the word About beside the year in an entry on the IGI you need to be careful, I always disregard such entries myself as they can be very confusing. If you find an entry where the message says it was part of an extracted programme then look below the message to see the Batch number. Beside the batch number you should see Source Call No., click on the number given, which should be highlighted as a link, and that should take you to details of where the entry was extracted from, i.e. the LDS film. You can then use that information to order the LDS film of the original item to check the entry for yourself. Did you know that you can search the LDS Library Catalogue for a place name to see if they have anything on film for the place of interest to you? If not then go to the family search site, At the top of the page you will see a tab Search Records click on it to get the Drop down list where you will find Library Catalog. Go there and then select Place Search. Put in, for instance, Great Waltham in the top box and Essex in the lower box. If you get up a list of results then click on Church Records, not Church record indexex. The link to Church Records should then bring up a list of the Church Records the LDS have on film for Gt. Waltham. In the case of this parish I see that they have Bishop's Transcript 1800-1874, and Parish Register 1566 - 1984. Select the item that interests you to go forward to further details about what that item contains. The Parish Register link then tell you that it is s microfilm of original records at the Essex Record Office Chelmsford, and gives the Essex CRO ref. number for the item. In the top right of the screen you will see View Film Notes, go there and you will find 3 items listed detailing exactly what is on each of the 3 films for this parish's registers. Select which film suits you most and note the title and film number, or print the page, so that you can order the film. The LDS charge a small hire fee per film. On the home page of the LDS site you will find a section on addresses of LDS centres around the world, search there for your area to find your nearest centre. See my message to Jenny Manning of the past day or two to see how to go about ordering films at the LDS, you now order them on line, I have details this in that message to the other Jenny. The LDS visit archives and CROs to make their films of whatever holdings that archive or CRO hold. Which means their films are usually of original sources. Any problems with what I have written above, just ask and I will try to be clearer. Good luck with Samuel Smith, I have the same name in the North East of England but have this Smith family back to the mid 1600s so there is hope for you too. Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<Hi Jenny, Where do you find the messages? the person I was looking for is Samuel Smith b. 1731 in Great Waltham. Regards, David.>>
Did you also know that you can have the LDS just make a copy of that particular PR entry and send it to you. Not sure how they do this outside of the US (I would just use the order form and pop two dollar bills in the envelope, well, maybe 3 to cover postage). Very reasonable. Assuming you will know someone who has been to the States and still has some bills left over from their trip. (BTW I've sent cash to all sorts of places and only been gipped once - Wales). I can send you a copy of the order form off list if you can't locate it on their site - I always had a problem finding it, so saved a copy to my desktop. I've done this several times (especially when I am only interested in one or two entries). Also, even if the record is not on the IGI, if you know it exists (from an index for instance), look up the film number for that place in their catalogue and add that numer to the form along with your request. They have filmed many parish registers that still do not appear in the IGI. HI Sylvia, I have a note of the ordering process for copies somewhere here on my computer but I would be glad to have a copy of the order form which I don't have. Thanks To order an LDS film online at the familysearch site you pay the hire charge by credit card. The charge will be made in US dollars and the exchange rate will be sorted out via that manner of paying. Maybe you can also pay for copies by card too. I know that a lot of parishes material, and other sorts of material, that the LDS have on films is not included in the IGI. I think they have stopped updating the IGI or something because they are in the process of putting a lot of things from their films on the record search pilot pages of the familysearch site. This is a slow process and not too many counties are covered on this pilot site yet. I use the records on that site for County Durham, this covers the BTs for the diocese of the Bishop of Durham which took in Northumberland and parts of Cumberland and North Yorkshire and it is very useful to be able to access these BTs online where you can save or print a copy. It is something to keep an eye on for future developments and more counties BTs etc., being put on the site. The link for the record search pilot is as below but nothing for Essex there yet. http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=1 Something else to look for when you find your place of interest in the LDS library catalogue is Parish Chest material on film. This can be very interesting as it contains the parish accounts and things such as pew rentals. Pew Rentals show who rented a pew in the church and where that pew was situated, or so I have found. You might also find that one of your ancestors was a churchwarden and perhaps he kept the accounts and other records, he would have signed his name to such accounts etc. Elections of churchwards might also be found in the parish chest. You might also sometimes find items such as settlement records and removal orders, bastardy orders and all this sort of this kind in the parish chest. The LDS also have films of quite a lot of mariner and shipping records. You will find details on how to access this part of the LDS Library catalogue via the Mariners website at the link below. I have used one or two of these mariner films when researching my mariner ancestors and found them very useful. Knowing that Colchester was a busy port I thought that some subscribers to the Essex list might find this section of the library catalogue useful. http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/ Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<Did you also know that you can have the LDS just make a copy of that particular PR entry and send it to you.
