East Anglia is a prolific area for bearers of the Barnard and Bernard surnames which are often found interchanged over time. The recently formed Barnard_Bernard Surname DNA Project is dedicated to connecting researchers interested in the surnames Barnard, Bernard or close derivatives all over the world in order to look for connections between hitherto unknown cousins so that they may benefit in being able to compare their paper research. The testing company we use is Family Tree DNA which is probably the largest organisation of its kind. The test itself is very easy and painless, and consists of rubbing cotton swabs or plastic swabs on the inside of the cheek. As the test is done on part of the Y-chromosome, only males bearing the surname can take the test. However females or others interested in the name can take part in the project by persuading a male relative to take the test and perhaps share the cost. We have already found matches between members of our group who were able to connect and compare their research. In each case one or both profited by discovering more about their heritage.
