Hi My ancestors , the James family, lived for many years in Little Clacton Essex. Although I have found most of the records in the St James parish records, and have confirmed them in the official records from the GRO I have been unable to find a marriage for Jeremiah James and Clara Elizabeth (Bessie) Duggan, who married around 1875. When their first child, Jeremiah James is baptised in 1876, the father Jeremiah is listed as a soldier. Bessie’s background is Irish, although in the various census, she gives a number of different places in England as her birthplace. The family story is that she was born at sea. Anyway, I am wondering if perhaps they were married outside of the country. I believe permission to be married had to be granted by the regiment. My questions are: what regiment was Jeremiah likely to belong to? Where would these records be found? Thanks for any input. Elaine Robinson Georgetown Ontario
