    3. Another thing you could do is to join the mariner mailing list, this list deals only with ships and the men who sailed them-Royal Navy & Merchant ships and Mariner. Go to the mariners website at www.mariners-l.co.uk There you will see a list of subjects & countries to choose from including the Mailing List. I found the listers very helpful when I was tracing my 3 master mariners and was given lots of details about most of the ships they sailed on over their times at sea. The Ancestry site has a lot of Master Mariner & Mates certificates, with the testimonials that go with them, but I am not sure how far forward in time these come up to. They may not contain men who would have been at sea during the 2 World Wars. Do you have anything with his master mariners certificate number on at all? If so then you could search for him with that number on the Ancestry site to see if anything comes up. Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<I don't think you need an FOI request as these documents tend to be publically available now. Although there may be some caveats around WW2 as some of those who served are still alive so you may need to show a connection to the person whose records you are looking for. >>

    3. April, I don't think you need an FOI request as these documents tend to be publically available now. Although there may be some caveats around WW2 as some of those who served are still alive so you may need to show a connection to the person whose records you are looking for. That said, I'm pretty sure you can apply for their service records via the GRO in Kew. Check the website but I'm pretty sure you can see if they have anything for your person and then either order the records they have and download them online (not always available) or get copies from the archives there. I think Findmypast also has some information about master mariners/ merchant seaman who served, although that will probably give you the Kew reference information rather than the actual records. But again it confirms if there are any records. The other thing to do is there is a master mariner mailing list on Rootsweb, post a request there with a few more details about what you are looking for and someone may be able to help in more detail. There is also a Master Mariner association based in London I think, so you could try contacting them to see what they recommend. 3. Hi Bruce, The Thorrington parish registers are available to view on SEAX via subscription (varying from one day up to one year). The baptism register records: George, son of George and Susanna Aldham was baptised on 23 March 1814, George was a farmer. The burial register records: Susanna Aldham buried 18 April 1816, of Colchester, infant George Aldham buried 28 September 1816 of Thorrington, aged 2 I don't know if the above information is of any help to you. Regards David Many thanks to all who responded to my message. I’m puzzled by ‘Susannah Aldham born and buried 1816 in Thorrington, the parish record says she came from Colchester.’ Is this an infant born and buried in the parish but whose parents came from Colchester? As Thorrington doesn’t seem to be available on SEAX I can’t check it it myself. David has rather spoilt my theory of it being the same George unless someone is able to find another Susanna ALDHAM death between 1818 and 1822 and George (with two small children) was a little economical with the truth in his (second) marriage. 3. Hi Bruce, I have been building up a database of the surname HUMPHREYS (including the various spellings) in Essex. I have the following entry from the Witham marriage register (D/P 30/1/15): George ALDHAM of the parish of Ulting in the Co: of Essex, Batchelor (sic) and Elizabeth Higham HUMPHERYS of the parish of Witham in the County aforesaid, Spinster were married in this church by Licence this fifth day of July 1821. The witnesses were Harriet Aldham and John Humpherys. Interesting to note that George said that he was a bachelor, so the George you found in Frating could be another person. Hope this helps. St. Margaret, Westminster) and Mary Ann of Gt. Chapel Street. * /Anecdote William claimed that he was born in Drury Lane. That could give some weight to the William age 2 mths in the 1871 census, son of Francis and Elizabeth of Westminister, St. John the Evangelist./

Have you tried Loughton & District Historical Society? http://theydon.org.uk/lhs/ The Barnardo's website also has a great wealth of historical info; start here: http://www.barnardos.org.uk/what_we_do/who_we_are/history.htm There is no mention of Loughton in their list of homes, however, and it seems exhaustive (not many mentions get made of the brief use of Upshirebury, Upshire, as a Barnardo's home but it is listed here). Perhaps Uplands nearly became a Barnardo's home? Thy also have an image and film archive which might be worth an enquiry: http://www.barnardos.org.uk/what_we_do/who_we_are/history/family_history_service/family_history_service_our_service/photo_archive.htm Regards, Lawrence, in neighbouring Waltham Abbey On 16/01/2013 18:32, Bev Harsh wrote: > Hello List! > > Would anyone have any information on this as a convalescent home c1891-1900? > > I know that Miss Lobb was its head, and have found various ads in connection > with it in British Newspaper Archive. > > There may have been a connection with Dr Barnardo, as in 1895 there was a > sale of work "the fifth annual" in the Public Hall, opened "in the absence > of Dr Barnardo".
