    3. Hi Jenny, I did glean the Marine Deaths from the Family records centre, when it existed, and he was not there. Abraham doesn't appear on the 1841 census either, although he would have been about 16, and could be anywhere. 3. Hi Glyn, Thanks for this - I hadn't thought too much about the continent. His brother Samuel died in the Royal Artillery, so maybe my thoughts were not on seafarers. I have tried newspapers, but to no avail. The death you mention in your other mail, I already have. according to the parish record, he was 73, so I have attributed it to another Abraham born about 1767. Most of the NORSTER/NOSTER clan originated from Portland, Dorset, but this is a little enclave in Essex that I am trying to complete. Again, thanks for your help and observations. 3. HI Don, If you think there is any possibility that Abraham could have died abroad, or at sea, or married abroad, then you could try searching the GRO index of deaths and marriages overseas which you will find on the findmypast site. If he died on board a British registered vessel then his death should have been reported, by the master of the ship, to the British Consul at the ship's first port of call after the event of the death, provided there was a British Consul in that country. Failing that then the death should have been reported to the Registrar of Shipping at the port in the Uk where the ship first reached the UK. That Registrar of Shipping would then pass a copy onto the GRO in the same way as a District Registrar does a death that happened in England and Wales. If Abraham died on board a foreign registered vessel then his death would not normally be registered with the UK authorities, as I understand it. Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<recently joined the list, mainly to find any details about Abraham NORSTER baptised 28th Nov 1825 at Harwich, son of Abraham NOSTER and Elizabeth previously WINDER. 3. Hello Jenny. I think you meant his birth year was 1876, not 1846. Great Ilford was the old name for what's now known as Ilford. There was also a Little Ilford which became part of East Ham and then Newham. The London boroughs have been restructured several times. I tried looking for the first name Valentine in the deaths index but there's nothing obvious. I think you could try the burial records of St Mary's church. Someone else will know more about Ilford churches. 3. Colchester Library has a photographically reduced half-size copy of the Tendring tithe map (1840-ish). As far as I know (I worked at Colchester Library until December 2010) no material has ever been transferred from there to the Record Office in Chelmsford; this is an urban myth. The contents of the former branch record office in Colchester did all move to Chelmsford some years ago; and some duplicate microforms, and the tithe map copies, were given to Colchester Library as they were no longer needed elsewhere. Cottage Lane is certainly given as an address in the Tendring 1841 census return. Tendring was lucky to have an enumerator who bothered to give addresses for every house. Many enumerators didn't bother, especially in small villages. I think Tendring District took its name, in 1974 or thereabouts, from the old Tendring Hundred. And Tendring Hundred took its name from the village where local meetings, or moots, had been held. 3. David I can't help directly - I have a reprinted Ordnance Survey Map for the area from 1838, but unfortunately it only lists the names of farms, not of the little lanes around them. I popped into Manningtree Library yesterday to see if they had anything, but they didn't (it's only a small library). The librarian suggested I try Colchester, but that they may not have anything either as a lot of things have been moved to the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford. I'm happy to go to Colchester Library for you next time I'm heading that way (Chelmsford is a bit far); if you want me to do that it would be helpful if you could contact them beforehand to see what they've got. Another thing I did yesterday (as it's the sort of thing I like doing!) - I used the "Search by address" feature on FindMyPast to see who else was living in Cottage Lane in 1841, and then looked for them, by name, in 1851 (as Cottage Lane didn't seem to exist then - at least not as a street name). I found that several of them were living at addresses such as "31 Cottage" and "37 Cottage". I don't think these would have been an abbreviation of "Cottage Lane" (as we don't abbreviate street names like that here - I know you do in Canada, where I've just come back from), so I'm wondering if, by 1851, they had adopted a system of simply numbering all the cottages in the village without using street names? If you ever find out where your ancestors were living I'll be happy to go and take a picture for you - I don't live all that far away (and have a friend in the village). BTW, as you may know Tendring is also the name of our local government district (no idea why they called it after that tiny village), so things get a bit confusing at times. 3. Hello Listers I have a SWORD family who appears around the Thames in the late 1700s. A William SWORDS married a Mary BURTON in 1764 in Gravesend Kent, and had three children Isaac, William and Mary in the late 1770s. William senior was a Providore of Chadwell St Mary Parish. Isaac became a Mariner and married in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. His son William, also a Mariner moved up to Northumberland. There are a number of SWORD, SAWARD families in Essex, Surrey and London which could fit this family but the best fit seems to be in West Hanningfield. An Abraham SAWARD who was married to a Mary, had number of children in West Hanningfield, commencing in 1733 with an Abraham, 1734 with a William, 1736 with a John, and 1742 with a Jacob and an Isaac. There are earlier SAWARD events in West Hannington from the mid 1600s using the same names. The only possible marriage of an Abraham and a Mary who would fit is a Marriage in 1729 in Gillingham, Kent which seems a long way away so I have discounted it so far. Are there any listers who are after SAWARDS or variant names around West Hanningfield or further south to to Chadwell? Any suggestions appreciated. Jill Forster Sydney, Australia

But could you give me any more details of the “Susannah Aldham born and buried 1816 in Thorrington, the parish record says she came from Colchester” which you also gave me. I searched the baptisms up to 1830 in Frating and Thorrington and in the surrounding parishes for any more children of George and Susannah and after finding none decided to do the same in Colchester because you mentioned it. After going down through the long list of parishes in SEAX I eventually discovered “Elizabeth daughter of George and Susannah Aldham of St James, father late farmer” on 2 Aug 1821 in St James, but nothing else. My SEAX subscription then expired! Before deciding whether to take out another subscription I’m trying to decide what to look for next and where. Nothing so far helps to find George’s parents. I’m also trying to decide whether “late” farmer means “former” or “deceased”. Any suggestions welcomed. 3. Thank you David, I'm reluctantly coming to the conclusion that I have two different George ALDHAMs. Reluctantly because it is the George who married Susanna and had a daughter Susanna in February 1818 in Frating is the one I'm interested in. All I have for him is his marriage in Thorrington and his and Susanna's two children in Frating. Having downloaded a map from FamilySearch I can see that those two parishes are neighbours whereas Ulting, Wickham Bishop, Langford and Witham form another group with White Notley not far away. Also I don't really know why I thought that Thorrington isn't on SEAX. I've now done some searching there but cannot find any trace of either George or Susanna or any of their families, except for one base daughter ALDHAM in 1791. Thanks for your help. The baptism register records: George, son of George and Susanna Aldham was baptised on 23 March 1814, George was a farmer. The burial register records: Susanna Aldham buried 18 April 1816, of Colchester, infant George Aldham buried 28 September 1816 of Thorrington, aged 2 I don't know if the above information is of any help to you. Regards David Many thanks to all who responded to my message. I’m puzzled by ‘Susannah Aldham born and buried 1816 in Thorrington, the parish record says she came from Colchester.’ Is this an infant born and buried in the parish but whose parents came from Colchester? As Thorrington doesn’t seem to be available on SEAX I can’t check it it myself. David has rather spoilt my theory of it being the same George unless someone is able to find another Susanna ALDHAM death between 1818 and 1822 and George (with two small children) was a little economical with the truth in his (second) marriage.
