    3. Hi Diane, I can log on, pull up the register I want, see the front cover, I then asked for another page from the drop down menu and it is still, after five minutes, not coming up. Unless there is an explanation on the Ancestors page I suggest you email to ero.enquiry@essex.gov.uk and ask if there is a problem. There usually is a problem with their server. Everyone must complain or this will never get sorted. Glyn -----Original Message----- Is anyone else having a problem accessing SEAX? I have been trying for hours but cannot get to login after access! Cheers, Diana in OZ

    3. Hi Adrian. I tried to look at other postcards of Gt Sampford on eBay; saw one posted 1934 but the only recently sold one I could find with a pole has the top of it cut off by the top of the postcard! My few thoughts, for what they are worth: seek other images of the same place and places very near by, of different dates, to try to chart the changes in local poles. It may also be worth seeing if the line of poles in question is shown on any old, large scale OS maps (at ERO or via eBay - or maybe oldmaps.com though these may not be of large enough scale). You could then look for images of other poles on the same route, and also research the history of the line itself, as well as its termini and other ports of call. Secondly, no insulators would suggest low voltage, i.e. a genuine telegraph or telephone line, as opposed to mains or other HV electricity, which would need insulators, or at least bigger insulators. If I remember right, phone lines are or used to be only 50 volts. As you've already thought of, directories might give a clue as top when people in the village first had telephones. Persevere with that - adverts for local businesses and prominent buildings (civic, communications, alcoholic) and court listings of grander private residences would be worth seeking out. These could then be plotted on a local map in order to work out where the lines might have run. The local historical society, if there is one, may well have such material. Also try further afield, such as neighbouring villages and the nearest town - they would all be part of a cabling network which must have grown more or less linearly from central hub (town) to village and then the next village in the same direction. Trace the source in other words. Another approach, though it would be a long, boring slog, would be to study telegraph poles on eBay postcards in general, and via Google Images, noting down whenever an image is datable, such as your 1932/34 example. Record Office images would be ideal, since they are usually dated quite reliably, even if only approximately sometimes. Then maybe there's a district or county newspaper article on the first arrival of these contraptions? Lastly, maybe this website might help: http://www.telegraphpole.org/ - but don't look at the "Whence they Came" link! In fact, the whole site is very odd - they must have got electrocuted trying to collect insulators. Cheers, Lawrence On 05/04/2013 09:43, Adrian Gray wrote: > I'm hoping that someone with Essex local history research experience might > be able give me some pointers! 3. I'm hoping that someone with Essex local history research experience might be able give me some pointers! I know it's not directly genealogy-relevant, but I also know that there's a lot of Essex knowledge here (grovels to Elmo and Dudley). I'm trying to date the photograph on a postcard I've just bought on ebay of Great Sampford. The biggest clue as to the date is the telegraph poles with no cross pieces, as opposed to the ones with two cross pieces and several insulators visible in a card of the same part of the village sent in 1932. It was written on, assuming the date given is correct, Wednesday July 20th, which a perpetual calender tells me occurred in 1921 and 1927. Obviously the cards concerned must pre-date all of these dates - so can anyone give me any clues as to when the telegraph poles might have arrived in Great Sampford first? I considered trade directories, but I only have 1914 and 1933, which doesn't help. Many thanks, Adrian

    3. Hi Robert & Listers, It is not easy to trace Regiments of Foot in the early days, especially when they change names or get amalgamated but the 63rd Foot seems to have been founded in 1758, and by 1881 it seems to have been renamed the Manchester Regiment. Good Luck with your search ! Best Wishes ! 3. Hi, I have just rejoined the Essex list after a break, but the bug has got me again so I thought I would try to trace my elusive 4th GGrandparents William KINGSBURY born c 1790? And his wife Mary ???. I know very little of this couple other than they start to baptise children in Colchester as follows: Mary Ann 1815 Holy Trinity Elizabeth 1817-1817 St Peters Susan 1819 St Peters Joseph 1821-1825 St Peters Edward 1824 St Peters The baptisms for the first 2 children state Williams occupation as a Private in the 63rd Regiment of foot, for the others his occupation is given as Butcher. Not knowing where William or Mary was born or married is obviously making tracing there parentage very difficult? I have tried to find William's service record in the army with no success. I have also tried to trace them on census returns, however lack of info is making this difficult. If anyone has an interest in this family or can offer some help or guidance I would be extremely grateful. Kind regards Robert Salisbury

It seemed a few minutes to go by it in the train. My husband's gt. grandparents are buried there luckily we have some burial certificates for them. However, I do wish you well. 1. [Ess] The diary of Joseph Thomas 1828-1831
    2. MICHAEL DANIELS
    3. Hello Essex and Suffolk listers   Your East Anglian forebears?.   Wondering if someone might recognise names  in their family tree complimentary to those in a journal that was written some hundred and eighty years ago.     I am listing this data copied from my partial transcription of the day to day entries in an old diary that has come our way, this valuable document kindly made available to us by its present owner.   In 1757, one Joseph Thomas was born in Somersham, Suffolk during the last years of the reign of George 11. Perhaps early in his marriage he moved to Thorpe-le-Soken in the north-east of Essex . There he became a teacher and resided in this village for over fifty years.      No doubt being of a learned disposition he enjoyed writing and keeping a daily account of his life and all that happened in times so different from what we know today. The diary that we can now examine does not record much of great importance, just contains mention of local events, the planting and harvesting of crops often much determined by the weather at that time.  He tells of his week to week activities, regular church attendance on Sunday and his travels riding his pony, or horse-drawn gigg and sometimes using the public transport of the day for longer journeys - the stage coach.   What possibly may be more relevant for rootsweb subscribers are those names.   For most I just give a surname and this usually applies to males, but there are items referring to special occasions, marriages and certainly deaths and burials in the village and those occurring in nearby communities.   Also I have copied down Joseph's weather notes and further extracted any item I felt of greater general interest on wider topics of the day. Ask if you would like to have a view of these sent off list.   The diary commenced in the June of 1828 and ended quite abruptly in 1831 when the writer was in his seventy-fourth year, often by then in poor health.   Of course feed back would be welcomed.   Any names that appear of a positive nature, especially so. And in respect of Joseph Thomas, we still would like to ascertain the actual date of his demise, where he and his wife were buried - perhaps in Suffolk, not apparently in Thorpe!  We also vitally need his wife's maiden name.  Frustratingly these details still allude us, maybe someone can help.   Michael in Holland-on-Sea , Essex about five miles from Thorpe le Soken   Names list:   1828   June          Sawyer.   July           Platten, Jaynes, Munnings, Moss of Oakley, Harrison, Rolf of Ramsey, Thompson of Bentley, King, Denning, Stone, Thorn of Colchester, Platt                  of Chelmsford, Clapham, Hardy, Rev Adeney, Wilson, Benneworth.   August      Cordon, Brooks, Griggs, Rev Burgess, Thompson of Holland, Holmes, Lucas of Holland, Tyler, Osmond, Nichols, Cook, Frost, Simpson,                   Meadows of Ipswich, Elmer.   Sept.         Francis of Mendlesham, Long of Ipswich, White of Ipswich. 3. Bob in Ontario, you asked ..... I tried a search on Free BMD for the death reg. for Charles but he is not registered. Could i please ask if someone who has Ancestry.com if they would take the time to search for Charles STEPHENSON who died in the March qtr. of 1903. The GRO death index reference you need is as follows – Charles STEPHENSON (age 57) March qtr 1903 Romford 4a 267. The reason you couldn’t find it on FreeBMD was because the transcription shows the age (in error) as 5, not 57. You can easily check this for yourself by clicking on the spectacles symbol beside the FreeBMD entry and then selecting the ‘view the original’ link on the left side of the page. I have already submitted a correction to FreeBMD so hopefully the entry will be corrected on the website in due course. Duncan, Dundee

    1. [Ess] Cemetaries in 1882 Thank you
    2. I would like to thank 2 people who took the time to send me the information i was asking for. Howard Laver, thank you for taking the time to look for the information and for sending it to me and Duncan Smith, who also took the time for sending me the information and for sending me information on where Jane was buried. Duncan sent me information on Jane STEPHENSON d: 1882 which he found on Deceased on Line. I have not searched this site for a while and did so when i received Duncan’s information. The information turned out to be the correct Jane as she is buried with her husband and two daughters. As it turns out i was having a very hard time finding death information on Jane’s husband Charles as i did not know when he died. Now i will be sending for death reg. certificates for Charles and his daughter’s. All are buried in Manor Park Cemetery, Newham. Thank you again Howard and Duncan for the help. I tried a search on Free BMD for the death reg. for Charles but he is not registered. Could i please ask if someone who has Ancestry.com if they would take the time to search for Charles STEPHENSON who died in the March qtr. of 1903. Thanks again Howard and Duncan. Best Wishes Bob
