Hi Sally Ann, There is a large family tree on Ancestry that has George and Hannah on there plus details of all their children and who they married etc. Have you got this information already? Regards Diana Re: I now have a stumbling block in the above mentioned relative & his family. His name was George James JAY who worked as a bricklayer, son of Henry, a butcher, (date & place of birth/residence unknown - information from George's marriage certificate where he is listed as a witness). I have found no trace of Henry. George is on the 1841 Census in Romford, lodging with his future wife's family, Hannah (HOMSTEAD/HORNSTEAD - there's another story..), they got married in 1841 in St George in the East and in 1851 he is in Auction /Austin Place, Angel Lane, Stratford. I can find no trace of the family in 1861. By 1871 all his children (Roberta, Hornstead, Harriet & Martha) are living with his son, Henry, in Porters Town, Prittlewell. His birthplace on the 1851 census is given as Great Horkesley. I have found two deaths in West Ham, one in 1852 & one in 1869.
I was hoping someone might have access to the Halstead parish registers. According to the Writtle Archives, Mary Anne COOK married Henry BIRD on 30 Sep 1933. Various censuses show her as being born around 1814 in Halstead. I don't have any access to the Halstead PR's and so that line comes to complete halt. If someone could look at the PR's and find any information on her parents, that would be very helpful. Hi, does sks have access to the parish records for Manuden or are they only available via the Essex Records Office? I am trying to find the Birth and/or parents of James PIPER born circa 1735. I know that sometime ago there was a flood in Manuden and a lot of their records were destroyed but am hoping that copies survive somewhere. TYIA Nadine

I just want to thank eveyone who helped with this problem. The ranges given do correspond with the ages that I know from other sources, so that seems to have settled it. Hi Diane, Thank you so much for this. Now I do not recall seeing Jacky's reply (either for some reason it did not come through or I was over tired last night and deleted with out reading) Anyway would it be possible for it to be forwarded to me please. In fact I note that Diane has sent this to me and cc to the list which usually means I get it twice which I haven't. There are strange things going on with my emails at the present!! Greetings all. I've been away from my research for a few years, but am now back in the hunt. Hi to All ! Hear, hear !! - this sort of background information is all very much part of 'Family History' ! - anything which stirs us to go and visit the places in which our ancestors lived and died ! Coming from the S.W. London / Surrey borders I had tended for many years to regard Essex as almost being on the other side of the moon. ;-) But two things encouraged me to go up there and take a look at East Anglia which I had not visited for many years: (a) discovering that my Gr-grandmother came from the Suffolk coastal area; and (b) watching so many enjoyable episodes of the TV series "Lovejoy" and seeing so many beautiful places that I did not know - and Coggeshall was one of these that particularly impressed me when I saw it in the episode "Taking The Pledge" with Jack Shepherd guesting as an aristocratic tramp whose valuable miniature was in pawn. I just had to go and see Coggeshall and all those other lovely places such as Thaxted, Great Bardfield, Finchingfield, Saffron Walden, Maldon, the Belchamps, etc., (plus all the other lovely places just over the border into Suffolk !) Now I feel quite deprived if I don't manage to get up there once or twice a year ! Thank you for bringing back many happy memories ! Best Wishes ! This is what your reference suggests to me: Repository: Essex Record Office = the original document is kept there and can be produced on request Reference Code D/DSm/T23 = the archival reference that enables them to find it among the miles of shelving - D/D indicates Deeds Dates of Creation 1729-1839 = the earliest and latest dates of the documents Extent 14 = 14 documents Scope and Content Halstead = covers the parish of Halstead Deeds of etc = a messuage is just the old term for the cottage and land which clearly was named Nether Pryors in 1729 (Pryors is a surname, Nether is descriptiive of where the field was in relation to other fields of similar name (there might be lower pryors, upper pryors etc) - names of the owners/tenants are shown, the abuttals are the names of the fields to which it was adjacent It includes a tower windmill documents dated 1800-1839 it includes the will of Daniel Harrington, gentleman = upper class of society He lived at Little Waltham Hall (the hall was generally the manor house of the parish) which includes Little Waltham watermill and post mill (= he was probably lord of the manor, in medieval times the lord had the rights to the income from the mills so it makes sense that they are on his land) There is another copy of the documents at E.R.O. D/ABR 29/97 The pedigree of Solme and HARRINGTON families shows they are an old family that had gathered together their lineage as they felt important, being gentry of the district. (A pedigree is a godsend for family historians = someone else put it together in earlier times, and maybe it might take you back before the dates of parish registers if you're lucky.) If you go on to SEAX, and click on 'Browse Catalogue' in the centre bottom of the page, you can see the context in which this item appears. You can always email the archivists at ERO, they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable: ero.enquiry@essexcc.gov.uk If the document is not too fragile, they will copy it for you - I think it 's about 40p per page, not sure. You can order online. Jacky Jacqueline Cooper www.claveringonline.org.uk www.recordinguttlesfordhistory.org.uk

Celia, Enjoy your Wimbles; what a great job you are doing, as some of this info is priceless. Remind me ( & others) the address of your web site, please. Best Kevan
I second that, Lawrence, thanks for this lovely report on Coggeshall! I've also recently spent a day looking around this stunning little Essex town and the only time the smile left my face all day was when I gasped at some of the beautiful buildings. Anyone with Coggeshall roots is very fortunate as their ancestors' footprints are so well preserved here. What is so lovely about Paycocke's is that you can wander around much of it on your own when it's empty, round the richly decorated living rooms, up into the bedrooms and round the garden. Everything is so beautifully preserved and looks so much as it did when the Paycockes lived there that you can still feel the aura of Paycockes in this gorgeous house they built. What a lovely place Grange Barn is too, Lawrence, full of old wagons and steeped in history. Did you see the isinglass factory at the entrance to the town? Now converted into old people's accommodation, but the exterior is partly preserved. Though there's a lot to be said for wandering around Paycocke's with not a sole in the place (even the couple who look after the place disappeared when I was there) I do envy your guided tour too, Lawrence. I'd love to join your group but your visits are on weekdays aren't they? I work weekdays, so days off on then outside my leave periods are rare for me. Where has your group been so far and where are you going next? Colleen ----- Original Message ----- From: "La Greenall" <elde.worth@ntlworld.com> To: <Essex-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2008 1:53 AM Subject: [Ess] Coggeshall Sorry this isn't directly genealogical, but it is Essex! Yesterday, I took a party of WAHS members to Coggeshall for a day out, and thought it might be worth recommending to anyone with Cogg roots, or just thinking of trying a visit within Essex for a change. One couple in our group did have Cogg roots, and had a good natter to some locals, and even discovered a framed photo of their ancestral home displayed in the museum! (We also found someone there with roots from our neck of the woods.) The town's museum curator, Shirley Ratcliffe, gave us a wonderful tour of the museum, followed by a guided walk of the town centre. There are over 200 listed buildings here, including many 16th century timber-framed wool-merchants' homes. We then visited Paycocke's House, a merchants' home that is now run by the National Trust. After lunch (in a 16th century inn next door to Paycocke's) we moved on to Grange Barn, a 12th century monastic barn that has parallels with Cressing Temple, then to what is known as St. Nicholas' Chapel, once the gatehouse chapel of Coggeshall Abbey. From there we moved on to the remains of Cogg Abbey itself, which are now incorporated into the outbuildings and farmhouse of a private working farm. What made the day special, is that on every stage, someone was on hand and more than eager to tell us all about the sites. If you have any ancestors from this town then you must get a small party together and go! There were 17 of us, and for this sort of number everyone was willing to open their doors especially for us, on a Saturday when they are normally closed. I must say that it was nice being given the personal touch! Shirley did very well in making all the local arrangements for us. Lastly, I would heartily recommend a tour of the abbey farm, which is only available by contacting the farmer owner, Roger, who conducts you round personally, round both the outside and the inside of all the abbey remains. One of the main attractions is its brickwork, made onsite for the abbey's construction, and considered to be probably the earliest post-Roman bricks made in this country. When arranging the day I very nearly balked at the fee for the abbey farm tour - £8.50 a head (which almost doubled our members' ticket price) - but on asking everyone on the way home if it was worth it, the response was rapturous with no dissentions at all! (I think it must have something to do with the enormous pots of tea and home-made shortbread provided by Jill, the farmer's wife!) I will certainly say that a tour of this farm is more than worth every penny, and it really did finish off our day with a flourish. if anyone wants contact details, just ask.
