    3. Whoops!! Yes sorry it was a mistake in spelling on my part, it was late on a hot evening after a long & very hot day is the only excuse I can make for that one. It should of course be Carpenter & Joiner regards Jenny DeAngelis. 3. Hi Diana I put my tree on Ancestry a while ago but my membership has lapsed so I don't have access anymore. this doesn't sound like my tree, tho as I only have details of Henry's & Martha's marriages. I am confused by not being able to find any of them on the 1861 census. I would also like to find details of George's birth. Not quite sure how to do this as to date all my searches have been online. I am hoping to spend some time at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford soon; does anyone have any guidance? I am also confused as to where and when the boundaries are/were drawn between East London and Essex. Some of the areas I'm looking at used to be Essex but are now London and I'm having difficulty working out where the records are kept now. Any enlightenment would be gratefully received. Hi Sally Ann, There is a large family tree on Ancestry that has George and Hannah on there plus details of all their children and who they married etc. Have you got this information already? Regards Diana Re: I now have a stumbling block in the above mentioned relative & his family. His name was George James JAY who worked as a bricklayer, son of Henry, a butcher, (date & place of birth/residence unknown - information from George's marriage certificate where he is listed as a witness). I have found no trace of Henry. George is on the 1841 Census in Romford, lodging with his future wife's family, Hannah (HOMSTEAD/HORNSTEAD - there's another story..), they got married in 1841 in St George in the East and in 1851 he is in Auction /Austin Place, Angel Lane, Stratford. I can find no trace of the family in 1861. By 1871 all his children (Roberta, Hornstead, Harriet & Martha) are living with his son, Henry, in Porters Town, Prittlewell. His birthplace on the 1851 census is given as Great Horkesley. I have found two deaths in West Ham, one in 1852 & one in 1869.

    3. Hi Robert Further to the email below, I have now had a bit more time to check the two websites and two of the villages listed in the Maidstone Registration District (i.e Burham and Wouldham) appear on the CityArk website. there are many more than that in theMaidstone distict, so chances are your man wasn't born in either, still it is worth a look, and if you later find that the family may have been in that area earlier then the website is well worth a look. best wishes joyce ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce Shaw" <joyceshaw1@btinternet.com> To: "KEMSLEY, Robert N. 3. Hello, Just for information purposes, the CityArk web-site includes the Church of England parish registers for Medway and Strood/North Aylesford Registration Districts, and part of Dartford Registration District. So there is no chance that the information you're interested in will be on the CityArk site. (The site is http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/ .) Kent Family History Society has published some of the parishes you're interested in but unfortunately the coverage stops just before the dates you're interested. Regards, Charles Fuller. 3. Hi Robert There is a Samuel Stephen Swain born during the Sept quarter of 1865 in the Maidstone registration district (Ref 2a 524). This is the only entry for anyone of that name between 1860 and 1875. If you go to http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/maidstone.html you will see that there are many villages in the Maidstone district that he could have been born in so you will need to get the certificate to see just where it is. If you then google "Cityark" and go to the Medway Archives you will find that many of the parishes in the Medway area are available on line. The actual pages of the registers have been digitised and are availble there to search free of charge. This is an ongoing project for that area. It is possible that some of the villages in the Maidstone district are covered under the Medway Archives, I haven't cross-referenced the sites, but you never know your luck. Hope this helps best wishes Joyce ----- Original Message ----- From: "KEMSLEY, Robert N. 3. I'm looking for the baptism of Susannah SIMPSON daughter of John Lambert SIMPSON & Mary CHOAT(E) b.c. 1829 presumably Finchingfield. First child Mary was born in Hundon bp. 1826. With the exception of Susannah, their other children are recorded in Steeple Bumpstead PR's. The family are in Steeple Bumpstead at Rylands 1831/1841 - I was fortunate enough to get the 1831 census information from the Steeple Bumpstead OPC. The Simpson's appear to be from SUFFOLK - as John & Mary married in Barnardiston in 1826, they moved across the border and are there for 1831/1841 census. Then they seem to have moved all over the place, and I have almost all of them documented. All through the census Susannah SIMPSON says she was born in Finchingfield and there is no baptism for her in the Steeple Bumpstead pr's. Susannah married George WORLAND. Can SKS take a look at Finchingfield for me - I would appreciate it. Thanks, Shirley O'Donnell Barking Essex OPC

    1. [Ess] Hello & a JAY query...
    2. Sally-Ann Jay
    3. Good morning all This is my first post. Have been lurking for a while, learning & puzzling in equal quantities. I am looking at the JAY family in East London/Essex, mostly West Ham area. I've dabbled for a while on the Internet using the various censuses & BMD etc, backed up with certificates from the GRO. I think I've done the "easy" bits as I'm back to my ggg grandfather born c1817. I have lots of questions but not really sure where to ask them! So please feel free to redirect me. I now have a stumbling block in the above mentioned relative & his family. Can anyone help me move forward (or backwards or sideways!) with this? Maybe I've got something wrong? All suggestions very gratefully received. Sally-Ann Jay Greenham, Berkshire

    1. Re: [Ess] QUERY birth and christening records for St Giles Great Hallingbury?
    2. Roger Partridge
    3. Hi Carolyn ! Have you had any other answers to your queries ? I have not seen any ! I don't know this area well, but I would guess that in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses that Charles Saltmarsh himself gave the information about his birthplace and so gave the actual village of Great Hallingbury, but in the 1881 Census that some official may have filled in the information from the records and so put down the larger Registration District of Bishops Stortford which actually included that same village ? You are actually quite lucky to have his full name on this later Census as they sometimes only listed people in prison or asylums by their initials ! I hope this helps ! Best Wishes !
