    2. Steve
    3. The keyword "mariner" finds 250 people, most of whom have Mariner as part of their name. Sailor finds 499 Sailer finds 38, only 1 being an occupation Fisherman finds 189 Seaman finds 1320. I think that you might have to be inventive with the terms you search on and include Deck Hand, Foretop man, etc, etc. And am I right in my recollection that only ships in port were included in the 1851? 3. Hi John, You don't say what information you already have nor where you have already looked for your Pettican family of Copford. This is what I found in the 1851 census on Ancestry Ref. HO107 piece 1782 folio 423 page 3 Copford John Pettican head marr'd 45 farm labourer born Copford Sarah wife 45 born Marks Tey Walter son 8 born Copford Samuel son 5 born Copford Over the page is Alfred Pettican head marr'd 22 occ. Servant born Copford Sarah wife 23 born Marks Tey. I then found on the 1841 census for Copford Ref. HO107 piece 335 book9 folio 17 page 2 John Pettican 30 Ag. Lab born in County (Essex). Sarah " 30 ditto John " 15 ditto Remember that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs for all those aged 15 and over in the 1841 census, so John aged 30 could have been any age between 30 and 34 at this time. Ref. RG10 piece 1691 folio 84 page 11 Copford of the 1871 census shows the following Samuel Pettican head marr'd 24 Ag. Lab'r born Copford Eliza wife 25 born Fordham(?) Henry son 4 born Copford Emma dau. 2 born Copford I think these must be the people you are seeking. I am interested in your surname Windle/Windale but in County Durham, I have quite a lot on the name in that county. I am not sure if you and I have been in touch about the name Windle in the past but if you are interested perhaps you would contact me off list about it. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. > Hi all, > > Does anyone have info on the name PETTICAN from Copford, in particular > John b1806, Samuel b1847 and Emma b1868. > > Regards > John > > >

    1. [Ess] 1851 Census question
    2. Jennifer
    3. Hello List, First of all, I have to tell you that I am a member of several lists, but I learn the most and have the most fun reading the Essex List. Thank you for all the wonderful and valuable topics you discuss. My question to you is about the 1851 census, and I know someone on this list will be able to help me with this. I am trying to locate a "mariner" in the 1851 census. Is it possible to search this list with that keyword on Ancestry? I know it is possible in 1861 census, but 1851 comes up a blank. Any suggestions about how I might find this info? Thanks very much, Jennifer

    1. [Ess] Last strays from St Benet's
    2. Celia Renshaw
    3. Here are the last Essex strays from St Benet's in the period 1700-1754 after which the Hardwick Marriage Act largely put paid to clandestine marriages - there are a few Essex strays in the parish after 1754, so I will post those later or put them on my strays website when I get round to updating it. For those who wanted a reminder of that url, here tis: www.strays.morganhold.com. If anyone knows of Scots who settled in Essex in the period 1660-1750, I'd dearly like to hear of them, especially if they were chapmen, dealers or merchants in the lace or linen trades. 3. Hi again list, back after my busy week afk with the penultimate batch of St Benet strays. Probably a good idea to remind everyone that I copied and indexed these from a printed transcript by the Harleian Society of the original PRs. In other words, there's a double chance of human error and typos and so, to be sure of the facts, it's extra important to check the originals. 1. [Ess] St Mary's Wix - Looking for help & giving help
    2. David Vesey
    3. For those of us living in North America or Australia (ie: anyone far away from Essex) we cannot do much to support the parishes where our ancestors lived in the UK. St Mary's Wix was the home parish of my family from the mid 16thC until the end of the 18thC. As such I wanted to help and to pass this offer along to other members of the Essex List who might wish to search these church records and might be willing to help the Church in some small way. David Vesey Toronto Canada /_Reference_ / Interest in the little church of St.Mary The Virgin, Wix, Essex ,England comes from near and far with /The Friends of St. Mary'/s joining in a mutual concern to maintain it's presence for spiritual, historical, architectural and family reasons. The original church, dedicated to St Mary The Virgin, was built in the late 11th or early 12th century by Walter the Deacon, the Domesday owner of The Manor of Wix, Park Hall. The foundations of the original chancel were discovered in 1961. Around the year 1123 this church, together with its tithes, was given as part of the foundation gift for a priory of Benedictine Nuns, built to the south of the church. The nave was rededicated to St Michael and was for the use of the parishioners. In 1525 Cardinal Wolsey obtained a Papal Bull for the suppression of the pnory; the buildings were demolished, together with the chancel of the church leaving the nave of the church for the use of the parishioners. A new church was built in 1744 out of the ruins of this earlier building. When completed it was dedicated to St Michael. Early in 1884 it was decided to refurbish the building, a surveyor's report having found that the walls and foundations were not substantial enough to justify any more money being spent on maintaining the structure and the present building, dedicated to St Mary The Virgin was opened on 12th April 1888. (The remains of the 12th C arches are still visible on the left side of the attached photo ( /http://www.essexchurches.com/ )/ _/Friends of St. Mary's Church Wix /_ Friends of St. Mary's have already contributed generously both financially and practically but to keep this historic church and churchyard safe for future generations more help is needed. Friends of the Church receive a detailed history of the church and church-yard and a monthly e-mail copy of the local parish magazine giving news of the village and church. In addition, for a small search fee, we can search for details of your relatives and ancestors from the births, marriages and deaths registers which date from 1560. The churchyard grave inscriptions have also been surveyed. _/Joining The Friends /_ Joining the Friends costs a very small fee - all directly payable to the Wix Parish Council. If you would like more info re helping the Church or to have the detailed Church records searched please e-mail Don in Colchester Essex : chriswithdon@btinternet.com / /

    3. Hi Ian, Further to my finding Samuel Swain with a wife called Frances in the 1901 census living at Islington I found a marriage that looks very relevant on FreeBMD Marriages March Qtr. 1898 Reg. District Islington volume 1b page 464 Shows Samuel Stephen Swain where a Fanny Phillips is shown on the same volume and page, The other female on this same volume & page is Mary Ellen Gordon. A copy of the entry for Samuel Stephen Swain should show whether he was widower or not at the time of this marriage and of course show his father's name and occupation. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. << Ref RG13 piece 174 folio 110 page 16 of the 1901 census shows living Islington London. 1. Re: [Ess] Hello & a JAY query...
    2. Joyce Shaw
    3. Hi Sally-Ann The boundary between Essex and London is the River Lea, many of the pre 1974 parishes that bordered on London are now in London but all those (now) East London parishes (e.g. West Ham, East Ham, Ilford, etc) that were in Essex have their records at the Essex Record Office. All other London parishes (apart from the City of London and the City of Westminster) are at the London Metropolitan Archives. City of London records are at the Guildhall and city of Westminster records are in the City of Westminster Record Office. Hope that helps best wishes Joyce ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally-Ann Jay" <sally-ann@chairwoman.plus.com> To: <Dianadiluca@aol.com> Cc: <essex-uk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2008 7:29 AM Subject: Re: [Ess] Hello & a JAY query... > Hi Diana > > > > I put my tree on Ancestry a while ago but my membership has lapsed so I > don't have access anymore. this doesn't sound like my tree, tho as I only > have details of Henry's & Martha's marriages. > > > > I am confused by not being able to find any of them on the 1861 census.
