    3. I am sorry I cannot help you on this query, David, but I too have a query on Stambourne and wonder if there is anyone onlist who could help. There doesn't seem to be a lot about Stambourne on Google although History House does have a little bit: http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexs19a.html I have been trying to identify a property that was left to an ancestor - John Bunting - that looks like 'Potters[field]' or even 'Poitersfield' in a1723 will? On the 1851 census I have found an area called 'Pitiful Wood' and the 'description of the enumeration district' for 1851, 1861, includes 'Pitifuls' which seems to indicate an area, a farm or a house so called but I can't find anything on google. There are a family of Ag labs living in 'Pitiful cottage' in 1861 [not Buntings!]. There are Buntons on all census returns from1841 to 1901 - I haven't yet checked the PRs yet but think that possibly these are descended from my Bunting as that is a common variation on the name. 3. Can anyone help with any information regarding any families or connections with my family names either as antecedents or descendants. Whilst the Webb family originated in the Kings Lynn area of Norfolk in the 1700's my direct line moved to London circa 1825 the they then lived in the East End in the mid 1800's to the later end moved out into Essex. The surnames involved are:- WEBB LEGGE REVENNE (RAVENNE) CHAPPELL MOODY GAYWOOD FOX (Not sure if London or Norfolk) THURGOOD Known locations include:- Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Mile End, Stepney, Walthamstow,Clacton,Felixstowe and Woodbridge areas. I appreciate this seem rather vague but specific enquiries in the past have generally produced very little that might enable me to trace any living relations or earlier families etc. Robert in North Wales -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. 3. It's a very oblique angle, the seller must be milking the location for all they can! Its age is something I've never looked into, but going by the rather austere architectural lines in the photo of it on your website, I would put it earlier than 1935. It looks more akin to the 1920s love of ancient Egyptian structures (remember those great monoliths on the North Circular near Chingford?) than to the flowing Poirot-esque full-on Art Deco of the thirties. But I stand to be corrected! (Unlike the Regent, alas.) 3. thank you to John Hartley for pointing out how badly the heat here is affecting me, I really messed up on this query. and no, John, I'm not offended in any way with your note, I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. the marriage would be around 1741, give or take a year, either in Colchester, Essex, or in or near Stradbroke, Suffolk. the names of the children of one or two sets of Robert Mayhew and Mary __?__, are as follows, and the middle names are possible clues to ancestry. Robert b. 1742 Stradbroke Mary b. 1744 Stradbroke John b. 1745 Stradbroke Elizabeth Dansie b. 1747 Colchester Mary Gingell b. 1748 Colchester Martha b. 1750 Colchester if Mary Gingell and Martha are my Mary and Martha, they married brothers Joseph and Edmond Cross, and I do have their marriages. thank you. 3. Hi Lawrence Thank you very much for your suggestions. I have checked film 0596989 from end to end - twice - and can find no other Bosworth anywhere in the records for the non-conformist churches in Middlesex, which cover Hammersmith, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Hendon (2 chapels), Highgate, Hounslow, Kensington, Ponders End, Southgate, Stains, Stanwell and Totttenham. But I can give it another try when the FHC opens after the summer holidays on 12th August. I will try to find Dr. William's Library and look there. I believe that my colleague has already checked the LMA, but we can also look into this again from a fresh viewpoint. I suspect that the Layton/Leyton spelling issue was a typo from my side, but thank you for noticing the variations - both there and at Wansted/Wanstead. I was not aware of the local history unit in Enfield and thank you for the pointer. Your response is very useful. 3. Presumably, the birth info came from his parents. To be baptised at 7 or 8 is a little old - perhaps his family had just converted from the Church of England? There might be baptisms of siblings and even possibly the parents too, at the same time, though it would also be worth checking this register a few years either way for more traditionally-spaced baptisms of siblings. Another possibility is that the family moved into the area after several years not having proper access to a chapel (or to a chapel the family approved of) for their son's baptism. In this case there might be individual family baptism records in Independent chapel registers spread over quite an area. I would check Dr. Williams' Library and the London Metropolitan Archives to see if any other records survive for this particular chapel. For instance, a minute book might record the admission of the family into the congregation. Even a modest mention of a Mr. Bosworth making a contribution or performing some service for the chapel might provide a possible first name for the father. By the way, in case you hadn't realised, Layton and Leyton are the same place, spelt Leyton these days, and Wansted is now spelt Wanstead. Both places are only a few miles from Ponders End, which is generally considered to be an outlying part of Enfield. There is a good local history unit in Enfield Town that is partly aimed at researching local family history, so they would also be well worth checking out for anything on the surname. When I've found information in Ancestry at my local library and mail the images home, I've found that all that's arrived is a link to the image, not the image itself. I've yet to be able to open one of the links. I don't know why this is, but I can take a flash drive (aka thumb drive) with me, I can plug that into the library's computer and download the information and images directly to the drive which I can tuck in my pocket, take home and upload onto my machine. You can pick up a 2gig flash drive for around 10GBP, 4gig for around 15GBP (that's as big as the hard drive on my old computer!!) and 8gig for around 20GBP. The 4gig flash drive I have is about 3" long and ½" wide.
