We recently had an enquiry for quite a lot of information from a researcher on the DYER/FELTON/DREDGE/NUNN families. They were looking for them in "ROMFORD" Essex. Reading the original email I think many "overseas" researchers are assuming when they see a registration district for an entry in the Civil registration that the registration district is the "place" where their ancestor was born/married/died. As seasoned researchers of the UK system, we know that is not the case. I am referencing this enquiry as the enquirer mentions several times that their ancestor was b/m/do in Romford, which in fact is not true. This is the registration district and not the place of be/me/do. In itself, this is confusing to newer researchers. When you look at the free civil registration site and you bring up a possible ancestor, click on the registration district (in this case Romford ) the drop down menu shows you just how many towns/parishes are recorded as "ROMFORD". This is not always apparent to researchers, particularly if you do not read the introduction pages. Looking at the census of this enquiry 1891/1901 the children were born in Rainham Essex, which of course has a registration district of ROMFORD. Again they mention a marriage in 1907 at "ROMFORD". This is just a FYI for researchers trying to find their ancestors in the civil registration districts. By the way I misread the DYER name as DYE (there were no DYER burials as requested on the St Andrews CD burial disc) new glasses appear to be in order ;-). Shirley O'Donnell Essex OPC Coordinator

My granduncle, Ernest Bohannon, was born at Pleshey in 1873. From the freeBMD he appears to have married at Billericay in 1910 to either Emma Heard or Annie Whally. Does anyone know of Ernest or his family? Kindest regards Wayne McBride
Wayne, Have you found him on the 1891 census - his parents are Josiah and Lucy? Pat Robertson

HI Robin, Try searching the LDS Family History Library Catalogue, you will find the link for the catalogue on the familysearch home page in one of the drop down lists along the top of the page. Once there make a Place Search for both Hornchurch and also Romford, once you get a result for one of these places select from the list of results Church Records, not Church Record Indexes. Under Church Records you should get up a list of PRs. BTs and perhaps other items for the place in question and you can look for St. Andrews church records covering the relevant dates to suit you. The home page for familysearch is www.familysearch.org If you find a suitable item, then click on it and you should see details of the item, in the top right corner of the page should be a link, View Film Notes, click on that link and it will take you forward to a page of Film Number/s by which you can order a copy of the film at your nearest LDS centre for a small fee. Once the film arrives at that LDS centre you will be able to book a reader and go there to view the film. On the Familysearch home page you will find a link for finding the address of your nearest LDS centre. Remember though that the libraries at the LDS centres are run by volunteers and are therefore not open all day everyday, you may need to call at different times of the day and evening and on different days of the week until you find someone to speak too about opening hours. Those opening hours given with the address may have changed if the volunteers for that centre have changed. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Robin, An extensive list of requests. Firstly, there is a St Andrews in Romford, and also St Andrews is the main parish church of Hornchurch. There is a CD available for the latter, regarding church burial transcriptions only. Have you any detail from freebmd, in the first instance; this is quite useful. Most people do not have any access to parish registers without actually visiting the Essex Record Office, and I believe there is also a paid service by staff and volunteers, to do look ups here. Have you tried contacting the ERO? Hello Sue I do hope someone claims these, or the owner is able to hang on to them for a little while, because the Luker's brewery was situated in Southend High Street until the early 1930s. I quote a letter from this week's local paper ( Southend on sea Essex) 'I wonder if anyone can assist me to track down members of these families. In the course of my work for a charity I have acquired a collection of old photographs and also a cert of service in the name of Reginald Frank George LUKER and national ID card June 1943 in the name of Beatrice LUKER These may be of interest to any family members should they be living locally. If this means anything to anyone get in touch with me ASAP and I will pass on the lady's name and addy, I have put it on the net as she may not want me to and there is no phone number I don't know why she also mentions the NICHOLSON surname unless she has more papers in this name Sue in Southend Essex
