Would it be a good idea to define 3 preferred layouts for the details? Perhaps cause of death might be omitted from mailing list postings.

    3. my one and only record, all of my direct ancestral line either lived and died before registration started, or removed to America before registration started, except for my 4x great grandmother. Certified copy of an entry of death registration district: Colchester 1843 Death in the subdistrict of Colchester Second Ward in the County of Essex 123 nineteenth of October 1842 in the Parish of St. Peter Elizabeth Cross Female Eighty Six Years Gentlewoman Decay of Nature James Barrett present during the last Illness Colchester registered Twenty first of October 1842 W. F. Brill(?) Registrar Elizabeth Cross was a Quaker by marriage to Joseph Cross. Joseph predeceased her by 22 years, having died in 1820. James Barrett was a son in law of Elizabeth and Joseph, having married their 9th child, Ann. Elizabeth's death is mentioned in the Friend's Journal. I assume Joseph is, as well, but I haven't been able to access his. Cornelia

    2. Hi list, can someone please tell me in which registration district a death would have been recorded if the death occurred in Claybury Asylum c 1925? Also, where would the burial likely to have taken place? Are there any records surviving of the patients who were at the Asylum? Thanks Ann

If you are very lucky and look at the entry in the FreeBMD index you may find a "Postem" with the details or a contact for someone who has a copy of the certificate. The existence of a Postem is indicated by an Envelope icon after the Info and Scan (spectacles) icons. The more Postems that are there the more likely it is you will find the details before having to purchase the certificate. So I strongly suggest that everyone who has used FreeBMD and then purchased the certificate adds the additional details to the database as a Postem (for Marriage Certificates there will two entries to add them.) Leaving your contact details on the entries for your ancestors is a good way of alerting potential cousins who are quite likely to be related if they are searching for the same people. Posting the details of any Essex-related certificates to the mailing list is also encouraged. 3. Hi Shelley Getting the certificate is the only accurate way to find the info you want. Paying for certificates is just one of the expenses of doing family research. You may have found the wrong person in that registration if you just go by the registration numbers, as most experienced researchers know only too well. Shelley Cameron wrote: > When one finds a birth that gives you the VOl., and Page number, is > their anywhere on the internet that allows you to type the vol.&page > number in so you can see who the parent's are before you spend money on > the certificate? The simple answer is "no". Unfortunately, like all hobbies, there is an element of expense involved. The law in England & Wales, as it currently stands, prohibits birth marriage and death certificates being made available on the internet. However, there are possible ways to find out, depending on the date you are looking at. One is to see if there is a little envelope icon beside the entry in FreeBMD. If there is, click on it and there may be informtion relevant to the parents. There may also be an email address for the person who put the information online who may be connected. Another way is go to your local LDS FHC and hire the film of the parish in question and search through it for the baptismal entry. This will not give you the mother's maiden name though and may not even give you the mother's name at all if the person filling in the register had forgotten by the time they did it. (The registers weren't completed as the events occurred [with the exception of the marriages] but maybe weekly or monthly or even quarterly!) The drawback here is that you have to know the parish concerned. The place given in the GRO index is the name of the registration district which will cover a number of parishes. You could look for the child in the next census (providing the next one isn't the 1911 which is being rolled out from January). That will give you the names of the parents and also any older siblings there may be. The next step would be to look for the marriage of the father to the mother, starting from the time the oldest child was born and working back. It'd be quicker and easier to get the certificate.

    3. Or you just go to next census and if still child alive see whom she is living with etc.as with a bit of luck she and her parents may be in same district. Don't forget to note all the villages of the district while you are in FreeBMD so relate to birthplaces noted in census. 3. Unless of course you have an idea of which church they were baptised in, then you can look at the parish registers to get the information you want - assuming that the registers have been deposited at the local records office, or have been filmed by the LDS. Or if there is an OPC for the area, they may have access to the registers and would be able to check for you. http://essex-opc.org.uk/ Lin 2008/7/31 Andy Hedgcock <andy701@blueyonder.co.uk> > Hi Shelley > If only it were that simple! 3. Hi Shelley If only it were that simple! Unfortunately to find the parents you need to get the cert. however if you have a birth after the second half of 1912, I think it is, the mother's maiden name will be listed on the Index as well. But only the surnames of mum and dad. 3. Cathy, Not brilliant, but my search engine on the essex1841 site also includes a few marriages and odd records from parish registers, including some from Saffron Walden - http://essex1841.com/search.shtml ; it is a simple search engine, and I have not updated the site for years, but you may find it helpful. There are certainly plenty of Cornell showing up around Essex. As regards baptisms, sometime you get a job lot of a family a few years late, these are always worth searching for - especially when ag labs moved about, then there will usually be a rough record of each childs' age. Plus an 1861 engine which is not well advertised or linked to - http://essex1841.com/history/all1861 Best Kevan -----Original Message----- From: essex-uk-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:essex-uk-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of cathy carley Sent: 30 July 2008 23:41 To: ESSEX-UK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Ess] Re ESSEX Registration Districts GDAY Shirley:) Thanks for that info, Much appreciated Im researching PHILPOTT/CORNELL/HAWKES..My direct Lines thru essex Im looking at Sampford Parish registers at the moment, Lil and great sampford for my lot Some i cant find there, Butt Thinking maybe they Baptised in a nearby Parish, or even werent baptised I did find tho in freebmd, often the District where their Births, Marriages , Deaths etc recorded were Saffron Walden/chelmsford, so ordered in those Registers Didnt think about checking what Parishes were in those districts, so ty for that valuable Piece of Info Looking also for any PHILPOTT/CORNELL/HAWKES researchers out there with ancestors from Sampford and Bardfield, also FRENCH surname my Direct lines Thanks Regards Cathy:) Find a better answer, faster with the new Yahoo!7 Search. www.yahoo7.com.au/search ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Any problems, please contact the List Admin: Essex-UK-admin@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ESSEX-UK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
