    3. Hi Listers: Can anyone do a lookup and send me the information on LOUISA POWELL? She had a illigitimate son in 1896 in Paddington. But I have never been able to find her before or after the 1896 birth. She was a domestic servant in 1896 and had the home birth in Paddington. I am crossing my fingers that someone might help me. 3. This discussion reminded me of a certificate I have that made me smile. When my g-g-g-uncle, having spent 15 years in India, returned to England and left the army he married. On the certificate his father is named accurately, but is described as a labourer. This is in 1868. I can find no trace of his father in any record after September 1832, and I am prepared to take a small bet that the person filling in the form substituted labourer as the groom hadn't a clue what his father had been doing (assuming he was still alive!) after he'd sailed for India in 1849. Mind, if anyone can disprove that by finding a William Thurgood, born in Hempstead, after 1832, I'd be overjoyed! Adrian

I am going to the conference in Colchester at the end of August. One of the free days, my colleague and I are going to attempt to travel over to Chelmsford and Galleywood Common to "walk" the land that my ancestors lived on. My problem is that we will be on foot (per se) and will be relying on the buses to get us to and from Chelmsford. Hi Margo _www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk_ (http://www.travelinesoutheast.org.uk) is one site. This suggests you travel between Colchester and Chelmsford by train, but as the bus station is opposite the railway station you should be OK. The journey between Colchester and Chelmsford takes quite a long time by service bus, but the train journey is much more expensive - it's up to you! Essex County Council at _www.essexcc.gov.uk/microsites/travel/public.htm_ (http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/microsites/travel/public.htm) has links to bus and rail services in the county (as well as to Traveline [above]) but doesn't try to integrate them. Don't forget to check the journey back as well. many of the bus services are few and far between and they may finish early in the afternoon - much as though I think you will enjoy the experience of walking round Essex (despite the current unseasonable rainy days), I wouldn't want you to be stranded on the Common overnight! 3. I have an instance on a marriage certificate when the groom's father is quoted as "John Allen" (a very common name), "Labourer" (a common but untraceable occupation) and "Deceased". He was definitely illegitimate, as was his half brother, and we doubt that even his mother knew who the father was! The information on any certificate is only as reliable as the person supplying the information. And if they don't know (or want anyone else to know) the truth, they will change what they say. 3. In my family there is one instance of the groom (his mother unmarried), naming his grandfather as his father on his wedding certificate. I think that it is perfectly understandable why a groom would be reluctant to admit to his in-laws and possibly his bride, that he does not know who his father was. On another occasion, the groom in collusion with his stepfather, gave his own name as his father, on his marriage certificate. 3. Hi Karen I have a very similar case with some of my wife's ancestors. Her grand-mother Emma BELL was born in London. In February 1901 she gave birth to a daughter before she married, but in the 1901 census which was held shortly afterwards she was recorded as married - but without the father in sight. However, on the child's birth certificate, both the informant and the father are shown as a John BELL and we know that he was not the child's father nor was it her father's name. So who was the mysterious John? We cannot find him in the 1901 census. What I do not understand is what - on a birth certificate - does "Name and surname of father" mean. It can be interpreted as meaning 'father of the child' or 'father of the woman who has given birth to the child'. You can almost hear the local Registrar saying to the informant "and who are you?" perhaps meaning 'are you the father of the child'. To that question the informant could easily say he was 'father' if he was the woman's father. Strange. William Bailey had a daughter called Emma so this is possible. I also ordered Sarah's wedding certificate and the father named on it was WILLIAM BAILEY. The grandfather WILLIAM also had a son called WILLIAM. Confused yet??!! The second william would have only been 14 when Sarah was born. I think that perhaps her mother was EMMA BAILEY and she gave her grandfathers name as her father on the wedding certificate as her bought her up. Is this a logical theory? 3. Sandy, Strictly speaking this is not relevant to Essex Rootsweb as your references all relate to the county of Gloucestershire. You will find more information relating to this branch of your family if you subscribe to Gloucestershire Rootsweb. There is also a Military Rootsweb, see: http://www.helleniccomserve.com/rootswebmilitrecords.html However, records of Chelsea Pensioners are held by the National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ Their records can be searched at: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp The Department or Series Code to be entered for Chelsea Pension records is WO97 (WO being the code for the War Office) I searched for "Osborne AND Gloucestershire" and only found the following 2 references. WO 97/197/58 JAMES OSBORNE Born COULEY, Gloucestershire Served in 2nd Foot Guards; Royal Marines Discharged aged 42 1805-1831 WO 97/608/25 GEORGE OSBORNE Born BRISTOL, Gloucestershire Served in 46th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 34 1815-1821 You could expand the search by changing the spelling of Osborne eg Osbourn(e) or omitting Gloucestershire. If you find your Thomas Osborne you could place another posting asking if anyone is visiting the National Archives (I will be going there within the next month). However, their website says: This series is currently undergoing digitisation. Access to certain pieces will be disrupted over the next 3 years and advance ordering of this series is not possible during this time. Please check with us that the pieces that you wish to consult are not affected before you travel. In my tree, census records strongly suggest that the girl's mum was already 'with' the man she was to marry a couple of years later, so I presume that he was the father of the illegitimate girl, and yet she never had any connection with his family in later years.
