    3. Olive, When working with immigrants, I always try to stay in the country they landed in. In your case, you need to study records in the U.S. Hopefully, she stayed in the same place in the States. Naturalization and Citizenship records will be key for you and they are very comprehensive for that time period. Although I am originally eastern Canadian myself and have no U.S. emigrants, I know that there is more than one piece of paper to the Naturalization and Citizenship collection for each state. There are petitions, declarations and others. You may want to check the Family History Library Catalog at www.familysearch.org<http://www.familysearch.org> and see what is available to you on film at your local LDS Family History Center for these records. Very possibly, through this collection, you will discover the names of her parents or her exact place of birth in Ireland and other pertinent information. Also, when does she say that she came into the States? It is a column in the U.S. census from 1900-1930. That will give you a hint on where to search for her shipping record? If she lived in New York, she may have come in through Ellis Island (www.ellisislandrecords.org<http://www.ellisislandrecords.org>) and if not there, there are numerous other ports to check. The Naturalization and Citizenship records may give you those details, even down to the name of her ship. Also, you can check www.immigrantships.net<http://www.immigrantships.net> which is a volunteer site and growing by the day with numerous shipping manifests. All of the above mentioned sites are free to use. Remember the mantra "Go from the known to the unknown" - in other words, stay in the U.S. and back her out of that country first before searching for endless possibilities in England. Happy Hunting! 1. [Ess] Mary Duffy
    2. Olive and Bob Bandy
    3. Hi all, I know a few of you have already done some looking up for me, which I really appreciate, but I still have not been able to find the right Mary Elizabeth Duffy. The one I thought was the right one born West Ham, Essex 1898 was not the one after all. Mary's marriage certificate in 1920 states her as being 25 years old which means she would have to have been born in 1895, her father named as James Duffy (then deceased in 1920). I'm trying Essex first because this is where she married and had the first child, so hopefully Essex is where they came from. Any extra help would really be appreciated. Thank you, Olive Bandy

    3. Olive Following on from Caroline Bradford's warning, I realise you are in Australia and perhaps don't have the grasp of English geography that some of us take for granted, but there are techniques for testing whether your assumptions are likely. FreeBMD is almost complete for the period when you assume Mary was born, and between Mar 1894 and Dec 1895 there are 27 Mary Duffy registrations. Almost all of them are in the North of the country. Similarly, in Ancestry's indexes to the 1901 census there are 21 entries for "Mary Duffy" and "Father = James". Nine are in Lancashire, five in Yorkshire, four in Durham, and one in Northumberland. The remaining two are in London - but one is a child of four, and the other is aged 25. There are three named "Mary E" - two are in Lancashire, born 1893 and 1896, and one is in Yorkshire, born 1896. But to put that in context, there were 1125 Duffys in the 1901 census who were born in Ireland! FreeBMD has ten Mary Elizabeths born between 1890 and 1899. There is one for "Mary Elizabeth A" in Jun 1895, Woolwich 1d 1308. Woolwich is in Kent (on the south bank of the Thames) but North Woolwich is in Essex (on the other side of the river). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a likely entry for her that I can find in the 1901 census. What else do you know about her or her family? 3. Hi Olive You are making some very big assumptions here. Even if she was 25 on her wedding day (and as has already been mentioned, one cannot always rely on this being accurate), she could have been exactly 25 (i.e. married on her birthday) or on the brink of being 26 (birthday the next day). So you need to consider candidates born in 1894 as well. Nor is it sensible to restrict your search to Essex - she could have been born anywhere and moved to Essex as a baby, just before her marriage or any time in between. Best wishes Caroline > -----Original Message----- > From: essex-uk-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:essex-uk- > bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Olive and Bob Bandy > Sent: 20 August 2008 10:22 > To: ESSEX-UK@rootsweb.com > Subject: [Ess] Mary Duffy > > Hi all, > I know a few of you have already done some looking up for me, which I > really appreciate, but I still have not been able to find the right > Mary Elizabeth Duffy. 3. When working through the "complete" BMD looking for relatives, it is necessary to take careful note of the page numbers at the top. I have found them in reverse order, sections out of order and, as mentioned here, just plain not there. As far as I can see, the only way to deal with these is to email support@ancestry.co.uk and give them as much detail as possible about the problem found, which then does get sorted. Eventually. 3. Mick A couple of things. Are you sure it was her wedding and that she was not a bridesmaid? OR for some reason did the wedding not take place. You mention your father and her brother - was her father still living then? if yes strange he is not in the photo! You mention her having two sons - have you any BDM on them? re your father, I assume from what you are saying he was in mufti, not uniform? when did your father and uncle (I am assuming this) join up? have you contact with the uncle? or have you tried to locate him? could the dates be just prior to or very early in the war? bob ----- Original Message ----- From: <Csgen50@aol.com> To: <essex-uk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2008 9:31 PM Subject: [Ess] Disappeared rellie > Good morning, > > I have an aunt, Diana Julie Stow born Q1 1924, Malden, 4a - 1282. 3. Sorry Peter, But I have to disagree with that, having photos of all churches in the Maldon area essexchurches only has 4 Maldon/Heybridge churches when there are at least 13.
