Hi Kevan, Thanks for the link... I've taken a quick look around the site, but most of those Wedlakes appear to have been involved with Iron Foundry and Engineering - not to say that the photographer isn't somehow related, of course! I'll keep checking.... Oh that the series "Who Do You Think You Are" will appear on our local PBS (Public Broadcasting Station) - I have spoken with the local programming department and they say not anytime soon. Just a reminder for new users of the fabulous Free BMD site - when trying to identify the "area" that the registration district covers, click on the registration district (it takes you to a new window) this tells you the boundaries of this registration district. If you further click on "here" it will show you the towns/civil parishes (take your pick) covered by that registration district. So just because the registration district says (in this case Marylebone), it doesn't mean that your ancestor was born in Marylebone. This is the registration district and not the "place". Marylebone is not a good example to highlight - my main line of interest is in the Romford Registation district which in 1838 covered 13 civil parishes/towns. Peter, I wonder if you might be able to answer the following query. One of my 3 x great grandmothers, Elizabeth Cook, stated on the censuses that she was born in Burnham, Essex some time between 1785-1791. I had a look at the original St Mary's Burnham OC register when the church had a heritage open day last year, but Elizabeth's baptism wasn't shown. My guess is that she was therefore either NC or was actually born in one of the smaller, more obscure Dengie penisular/hundred parishes but gave the enumerator the, more recognisable, name of the nearest town. Would that be a good guess, do you think, and would any of the Dengie parishes be a more likely candidate to begin the search for Elizabeth's baptism? Thanks for any advice you might be able to give. Colleen

The Northlight studio operated from 1865-1923+ at St Isaac's Walk, Colchester. Photographers included: James Barritt, F Braess, WC Buchanan, Wm Gill, Frank Siggers and Edward Steele. GW SIGGERS was a professional photographer between 1902-1914, though he may also have operated outside these years, one address he operated from is 50 Wellesley Road, Colchester. GWS was listed in Goody's Colchester Directory in 1903 Essex Country Telegraph in 1914. GWS did illustrations for History of the Ancient Church of St Peter & St Paul, Little Horksley by WF Dick. Frank SIGGERS was a professional photgrapher from 1905 - 1911 at the Northlight Studio, Sir Isaac's Walk, Colchester. He was listed in: Benham's Colchester Directories 1905-1911 Cullingford Colchester Directory between 1905-1911. Gordon Ambrose is also there in 1906 & 1902, but in 1899 it is Frederick Ambrose whom is listed as a photographer at this address. By 1912 there is no listing of either, although a Gordon runs a motor accessories shop. The address is less romantic - Waterman's Fields! And yes, he is a Beadle of the Court of requests. There was a Court of Requests which gave access to poor people, but it was abolished in 1642. There were other Courts of Requests in London ( abolished in 1846) which were to do with debtors. A beadle is a sort of court usher in this context. I have that James Barritt in my tree! he married first Priscilla Clark, and after Priscilla died, he married Ann Cross. James and Ann are enumerated in district 14, St. Mary at the Walls, Essex, England in 1871, next door to Eliza Ann Barritt and Hannah Cross, relatives of James and Ann. James is enumerated as "retired photographer". Ann Cross is a 3x great aunt of mine as she is a sister of my immigrant ancestor who is my 3x great grandfather, Joseph Cross. I have photographs of a few headstones in the churchyard of St Mary, Dedham. The names are Denney/Denny, Rudge and Wishart. It is not a comprehensive collection for these names - just what I managed to find in the pouring rain in May 2007. I'm happy to share them with anyone interested in these names. JL
