Attn: Carlene Gapper, Thanks for your email.... I cannot reply to your personal email address as my email "bounces back" ... I have no idea why? Yes, I know of Stephen Shoobridge (1810-1835) who married Mary Eaildon (c1815-unknown) and they had a daughter, Mary Jane (1835-unknown) who married James Harris (dates unknown) in 1865 in Tenterden, Kent. That is all I know of the family, so, I hope you can fill in the gaps to current generation. I do have details of Stephen’s forebears for a future email. New to this list, I tried to post a message last night which has not appeared. Am trying again as I think I sent the last one in HTML format, so am trying plain text this time. I am searching for the parents of Sarah ROLFE, b about 1785 Billericay, Essex. I believe her father was George Rolf. Sarah married Moses MIALL of Portsea, Hampshire in about 1805 but I do not know where she married. Does anyone have access to the Billericay parish records perhaps, so I might confirm her birth and parents ? Or are they available online somewhere? Any help would be much appreciated. Carolyn

David, Firstly you could check Lt Vesey's promotions via the archives of The London Gazette: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/AdvancedSearch.aspx?GeoType=London I have had a quick look. There were several officers named Vesey. It would be easier to find Lt Vesey of the 76th if you know his first name. You may find that he served with other regiments. You may also find that the other Veseys are relevant to you. Regrettably I can't help with the your names, but it is interesting to see Wix mentioned, where my family of BARBER originate about this date. Many of the surnames on your list occur also in Wix. I do have a number of other directories if you are interested. I hope that this fits - it is not directly family history, but certainly counts as local history, and is Essex-related. If anyone can help, plese let me know and I will put you in touch. I',m also going to put her in touch with Zofia at the Local Studies Centre (or whatever it is called this week) in Walden. Adrian I've been working on Essex to prepare it for uploading on our Drill Halls site and disappointingly, neither Graeme nor I have any pictures at all of Essex drill halls. We know that a significant number of them have been demolished. We have information that suggests that the occasional hall may remain and one of those may be Southend-on-Sea, at East Street, Prittlewell, but it was under sentence of demolition. I wondered whether there is anyone who lives nearby who can let us know any updated information, and, if at all possible, take a photo for the project. I would also like to know whether there is still a drill hall in Ongar; I've seen archive photos of it but nothing to tell us whether it's extant or not. Finally, there was a drill hall in Saffron Walden, but Kelly's Directory, 1914, doesn't state the address. Does anyone local know where it was / is? I was in the town briefly a couple of weeks ago, but didn't have time to investigate it properly. I would be grateful for any specific information because I think I may have the chance to go back at the end of the month, and if the drill hall is still there, it would be useful to know where to look. Any information about extant drill halls or offers of archive images of these lost buildings in Essex would be really appreciated. Many thanks.
