    1. [Ess] Essex Assizes - Thomas LLOYD
    2. The Dooley's
    3. Hi All, Hoping someone may be able to offer advice regarding court records etc. Thomas Lloyd was convicted at Essex Assizes for a term of life and transported to NSW on the Asia, 22 Oct 1824. I would like further details on his trial etc. >From what I understand on the National archives site, if I were to check the Home Office: Criminal Registers, England and Wales index I could determine the date of his trial and from that I could then refer to the Assize records for more information? Is that right? I live in Sydney so can't personally visit National Archives, can anyone advise as to who does the above type of research. Many thanks, Felicity Sydney

    3. I realize that this is only a 'long shot' but I wonder if anyone might have known Rose Amelia Wilkins who died at the age of 83 yrs in Harlow in 1991. Rose was estranged from her brother (my husband's father) many years ago and we have only just received the information of where she died. We do not think that she ever married. It is our hope to find someone who might have been close to her and who might also have a photograph of her. I would appreciate any advise as to how I might be able to find such a person as I do realize that this is not the best forum for me to use.....but I thought that it could be a start! I have ordered a death certificate for Rose in hope that a witness might be included on this document. Many thanks in advance for any advise. Alannah B.C. Canada

    3. Hi Maggie As you gather, the Colchester Record Office has been closed. Its collection of parish registers, now in Colchester Library, are mostly for North-East Essex. I did glance at a few of them, intending to consult them properly later, but was not given a printed list. However, they are all included in the Essex Libraries' online catalogue. Which parishes are you particularly interested in? The Library staff are very helpful and will be pleased to show you where the registers are located. 3. Free access to The Times Archive, going back 200 years, ends on 18 September. If like me, you have found that it has given you some valuable, often unexpected, information on your Essex family and local history (e.g. in the Personal announcements and articles covering WW1), I suggest that you use it as much as you can up to Thursday night.. The newspaper's announcement says that "All the featured content on our Archive home page and on Times Online will remain free to view, but if you wish to search the Archive there will be a charge to view the results." and lists the future tariff for full access to the Archive. Needless to say, this is not an invitation to subscribe! I recently returned from a four week trip to Colchester on time-consuming family business and was delighted to have free access to the Internet on Library terminals (though unable to download anything to my USB flash drive). I was very impressed by the way in which the Local Studies Collection had been re-organised for the benefit of family historians, but disappointed that I did not have the time to consult the parish registers that were deposited there when the rest of the stock of the Colchester and NE Essex branch of the County Record Office was transferred to Chelmsford. Best wishes Peter Moll Tortola British Virgin Islands Researching MOLLs in Southend-on-Sea and MOLLs and FREEs in northern and Metropolitan Essex plus some other recently uncovered family connections which I shall post later

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve" <steveshistory2@yahoo.co.uk > > are you aware of http://www.churches-uk-ireland.org ? I've seen the site, Steve. Some of the old photos are interesting, but I'm not impressed with the quality of the recent church photographs on the site, no fault of the site owner, I realise that clarity of photographic detail is a problem for most websites. Well done for your website, your pics are reasonably clear, though, because I'm an Essex church obsessive, I would like these to be larger and to show much more detail. For me there's no substitute for visiting the churches themselves, even the best photographs are always just a pale imitation. I have a largish collection of old photographs of Essex and keep a detailed photographic record of the many Essex churches and graveyards I visit, yet I'm even never satisfied with the quality of my own pictures, let alone those on websites - with the exception of one outstanding Essex website which has sadly closed down. > I think I have covered most of the Maldon and Heybridge ones, but I was > not aware of a Heybridge Baptist Chapel. Where is that one? There were two chapels at Heybridge Basin, plus I think there's still a chapel at Heybridge. The one I photographed yesterday is St George's, Heybridge Basin, odd little chapel in a converted nissan hut, I like it. > > There is also an extra + on the OS map near the junction of the High > Street and Wantz road that I have not yet identified. 3. All & Colleen, I remember doing a similar ride, around the churches of Woodford, some thirty years back, as a teenager. The churches were all manned by volunteers, and what a great way to see a few of the locals. Talking locals, when building on Ian's Essex Pubs site, and after adding London, I purposely worked on church parishes, and listed Pubs by parish, rather than by modern postcodes. This actually worked quite well, as I can now add a picture of the church, for the relevant parish - there are quite a few added. A step back, Ian (Pubby Hunter) left a fantastic site, but lacking any church roots / pictures - just PUBS. Just one church picture would be great to add to any of the sites - http://londonpublichouse.com/ (this now covers most of London, Essex, Sussex); whilst the other areas have been hived off to new sites, e.g. Kent (http://kentvillages.com/ ); Suffolk (http://suffolkvillages.com/ ) and most notably, the most recent for Hertfordshire (http://hertspubs.com/ ), which is a few days young. I know Colleen will bombard me with pictures, as soon as she reads this, this is what good friends are for; but, does anyone else have an interest in getting their research onto the Web. I keep emails brief, as I am not able to write poetic prose; but feel free to add anything to the Essex sites/s.
