    3. I think the scarcity of paper may have been common in the 1950s. My Dad was a sale rep. (in those days a commercial traveler). The back of the second copy of the orders he wrote out (and the use of the old carbon paper) were our drawing paper. We considered ourselves very lucky to have this. Regards to all. I would guess that a rector would have finished practicing his handwriting skills long beforehand and now had other more important 'exercises' to preoccupy him, whilst a newly-appointed clerk might well have good reason to brush his skills up, especially if his education in such things had been modest. Why in the front of the register? I bet plain paper was either scarce or expensive, or both. It might also indicate a new appointment, as someone who'd been in the post for a while might well have been able to build up a small supply of scraps of paper for rough notes etc.; perhaps the backs of redundant notices, bills, and deeds. I can almost feel the excitement of this new young clerk at discovering a whole blank inner front cover to the register, just waiting for him to fill it in his bestest hand possible with great glee! A bit like having a right good swivel on your office chair when you get given a new desk at work. I've had a few old (Victorian and slightly earlier) books with spines in very poor condition, and a peep at the layers in the spine usually reveals the re-use of already-printed paper, old book pages, handbills and so on, so even in more recent times paper wasn't discarded like it is today. Did you know that there's a Rootsweb list dedicated to the HOY name? I also found this website via Google: http://www.hoy.org.uk/ A brief look at its message board brought up one small thread on Elmdon, Essex HOYs from 2002, though in itself it isn't very helpful. 3. If you google for "Tilegate House" Harlow, you will find it is a sheltered housing/retirement housing complex, managed by Harlow District Council, but appears not to have resident staff. The informant could be a staff member at Harlow Council with responsibility for registering deaths, who may never have met Mrs Wilkins. 3. I have just received the death certificate of Rose Amelia Wilkins who died March 1991 and the place of death was 10 Tilegate House, Bush Fair, Harlow. I assume that this is a care facility but would appreciate any information in that regard. Her 'usual address' was 63 Barn Mead, Harlow, and the informant was a Doreen Lilian Allen. I did a 'google' search for this name and did find that there was a Doreen L Allen who was listed as an assentor for the candidate Roy Collyer who was nominated for District Councillor for the Toddbrook Ward for May 4, 2006 election. Again a 'long shot' but perhaps someone on the list knows a Dorren L Allen and could possibly let me know how I could get in touch with her? We would love to get in touch with someone who might have known Rose. I will, of course, persue further avenues and thank you again to those of you who have given me some ideas already. Alannah B.C. 3. My first posts as a librarian were in the old Southend Central Library and in charge of a small branch in Eastwood, not far from my birthplace, but I have been a registered user of Colchester Library since 1989. I must have experienced a few senior moments after chatting with its staff and relaxing away from the hurly-burly outside Dudley Diaper has kindly e-mailed me from Colchester Library to correct the information that I posted regarding the registers that the Colchester branch of the Record Office gave them when it closed, about a year and a half ago. All the original Essex parish registers went to the ERO in Chelmsford, but Colchester Library was given microfiche copies of nearly every one of them for the whole county. The fiche collection is so comprehensive that it is not felt necessary for it to be listed in the online catalogue, although the beginning and ending dates are different for each parish, of course. The ELAN catalogue does, however, include about 40 bound volumes of assorted parish registers (mostly published before 1914), a lucky dip for some of its users. 3. Dear David Just looked on the two second hand booksellers I used here, sure you have already done this, alibris and abebooks and of course no luck. It would be more likely to be found through an antiquarian book shop. The only other thought is that is there anyone who can go into the church and see if there is list of rectors up on the wall somewhere? Unfortunately I won't be going in that direction for at least the next few weeks. 3. I live in Old Harlow, but don't know of Rose - not surprising, as there are 80,000 people in the new town. Rose was quite elderly so it may be that she lived in one of Harlow's old people's homes or a warden assisted dwelling. If so, the warden may know if she had any other family who may have kept her photos and or happened to her things. Sometimes those places have Christmas parties where photos are taken, so there might be a group photo of her. Let me know where she lived or died once you have the information and I may be able to give further help with this.
