I am looking for Robert bc1775, Catherine bc1770 & possibly William bc1763 & James ALEY bc1760. I have many of Robert Aley's descendants as this is my line. Robert was a tailor of Parkside Knightsbridge. Catherine who married John Hornsby in 1792 at St Mary Abbotts Kensington, was mentioned in Robert's Will as his sister. I have a short Tree starting with James Aley, a poulterer of Queens Buildings Kensington (almost opposite Robert's address off Knightsbridge Road) who is possibly a brother. Most of his children were baptized at St Mary Abbotts. William Aley whose burial I was given by St Mary Abbott's archivist, lived not far away at Gravel Pits Kensington. I have searched most of the PRs in the area, but found no baptisms of marriages. I understand there were a number of ALEY families around High Laver, Harlow, Romford & Epping areas in the 18/19th centuries, so hope mine migrated to London from Essex in the late 1700s I am also interested in any other ALEYs as I have a database with about 5000 names & only a few from this county. I am happy to search my db for anyone who asks. Pat Grove.

Hello, I am new to your list, so hope this message is OK! My Gt Gt Grandmother Betsy CLARK is on the 1841 census as a 6 yr old. Residence, I think is Bude or Bride Farm, Shelley/Ongar, Essex, but the writing is unclear. What I am asking is, has anyone come across this farm before or is there a directory of farms which I could look up and does anyone have any connections with these Clark's? Betsy's parents were William & Mary Clark, siblings were William b1821c, Hannah b1826c, Mary b1831c and Ann b1833c I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with this. I spent ages Googling this but came up with zilch. Thanks, Julie.

Is there anyone who has free access to this census who is able to do a look up for me plse. I am looking for the following family. Surname is HASLAM and area is BOLTON area, Lancs, poss Horwich I know that this is a common name in that area I am looking for John Haslam who was definately born in 1898 and he had siblings who we think are Annie, Ellen, Tom (Thomas?) and Jim ( James?) but I d/k when these siblings were born and there might be more. On his marriage cert his father is listed as John J Haslam ( although that J may not have been mentioned in census, and occ bleacher and by time of marriage, when he was 39, they are living in Peterboro. I would LOVE to know more about this family that belong to a friend of mine, there are many mysteries. Thanks so much in advance
I am hoping someone who has access to newspaper clippings/libraries etc in South end on sea can help me out here in Australia. I am helping a friend unravel a family mystery. Her father Ronald Watford was born 24/8/1917 in Rochford South End on sea to a James Watford (born 1892 Iin shoreditch Middlesex) and Ethel Maud Hazell (born 1895 in Hackney )They lived at 54 Hartington Rd according to his birth cert that I have ... They married 26/6/1915 in South Hackney London and lived at that time at 379 Victoria Park Rd The story goes that James who was a staff Sergeant for Army Ordnance Corp (a Vulcanite Turner)A2585 ..Catalogue Reference # WO372/21 DATE 1914-1920...died in the war but I cannot find any death for him .. The mystery is another woman named May Lucy Stein brought up Ronald and he always thought that was his mother ..his grandmother being a Lucy Stein and step father Frederick Foster Garratt..I have Frederick and May's marriage cert 24th June 1912 and they lived at 81 Hartington Road at that time ..Ronald was never adopted as his surname remained Watford but he always thought his birth mother was May Lucy Stein. I cannot find a death for Ethel Maud Watford either so don't know what happened to her or how a neighbour hood friend ended up raising her child keeping it a secret from him. I believe Hartington Rd still exists and wonder if anyone / family or friends may know of the Watfords and Garratts /Steins. Maybe newspaper clippings may shed light on James's death and perhaps May's too. Kind regards Virginia Kinley -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for home users. Hello, I am new to this list. I have recently purchased a death certificate for a relative which shows he died in 1962 in Essex County Hospital, Colchester but his address is Cranbrook House, Frinton on Sea, Frinton and Walton. I would be interested to know if Cranbrook House is still in existence and could anyone tell me if it was a retirement/nursing home, or a private residence. Regards Heather
Many thanks to those who came up with suggestions and information on Thomas Sutcliffe, photographer. Now I have his full name and address, I can make an attempt to track down any surviving photos taken by him, in the faint hope of finding photos of my family. It's possible that the Royal Photographic Society will have some information. Alannah, My PC went down before I could reply to your message regarding the address given on Rose's death certificate: Tilegate House, Harlow. Now I'm back online I can tell you about the amazing coincidence regarding that address. I know Tilegate House very well. It's a warden assisted dwelling I pass every day on my way to my office, and is comprised of a group of flats where senior citizens with health problems minor enough for them to live independent lives, but severe enough that might sometimes need a warden's assistance, live. I'll take a photograph for you if you'd like one. The amazing coincidence is that my mother was the warden of Tilegate House until the late 1980s and I have one, possibly two photographs of her with the TH residents. If your Rose Wilkins lived at Tilegate House during my mother's period there, and she may have done. Then she is almost cetainly among the residents shown in my photograph/s. I'm sure I remember my mother mentioning a resident who was named Miss Wilkins too, and if she's the small, dark haire woman I seem to recall, I met her a few times. When you first mentioned Rose's name, I'd completely forgotten about the Miss Wilkins I'd met - I met so many of my mother's residents over the years. It was only when you emailed me that she'd lived at Tilegate House that the penny dropped. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of the Tilegate House residents in my photograph/s. However, I do know the woman who took over as the warden of Tilegate House when my mother retired - she was still there when Rose was there and at time of Rose's death in 1991, so she would certainly have known Rose and may have her own photos of her. This former warden is married to a former staff member of mine, so I hope to be able to contact her to ask her if she can identify Miss Wilkins in my picture/s and if she would be willing for you to email her for details of Rose. How about all of that for a coincidence! Colleen I realize that this is only a 'long shot' but I wonder if anyone might have known Rose Amelia Wilkins who died at the age of 83 yrs in Harlow in 1991. Alanna
My PC has been down for a couple of a days because I stupidly opened an e card and it got a really bad virus - can't believe I did that, I was in a mad rush and not watching what I was doing. As I'm an IT dodo, I have to wait until my daughter's home to clean up the PC for me and am using my daughter's PC in the meantime. All of the messages I had from Jim and others re: my grave photos and my address book are on the other PC. I daren't even get my pictures or backup data from my portable hard disc as that was connected to my PC when it got this virus. I need to organise a second backup disc. I believe I had sent copies of grave photos to all of the Essex listers who'd asked for these prior to my PC going down, however I've probably missed more recent requests. So apologies to Jim and any Essex listers I haven't replied to, I'm not ignoring your emails, I just can't access the data and photos on my other PC and hard disc at present. I'd be grateful if Shirley of OPCs would pass that information onto Jim too. Thanks. Colleen
I have references to Thomas Suttcliffe who worked from Myrtle Villas, Hill Estate, Dovercourt between 1881-1888. He's recorded on Kelly's Direstories for 1882-8 as a yeast inspector, importer, forwarding agent and photographer and is on the 1881 census too. Have you looked at www.historicaldirectories.org I've found him in the 1882 Kelly's Directory of Essex, page 503 (sub-heading of Photographers is on previous page). The entry reads: Sutcliffe, Thomas 1 Mytle Villas, Dovercourt, Harwich You may find more entries in earlier and later directories - enjoy the search :-) Hope this helps Heather C P Biggam wrote: > Does anyone know anything about a photographer called T. Does anyone know anything about a photographer called T. Sutcliffe who had a studio in Dovercourt in around 1875? I don't have any other information at all about him. Carole Biggam ==================== Dr C P Biggam, FSA Dept of English Language University of Glasgow ====================
Perhaps you could specify where when and who and be aware pre 1837 information is limited to baptisms burials and marriages ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shelley Cameron" <dragonlady_123@rogers.com> To: <> Sent: Friday, September 19, 2008 8:39 PM Subject: [Ess] Hello List: > > I was wondering if anyone would have access to Birth and Marriage > records prior to 1800 that would be willing to check a couple of names > for me. > > Thank you > Shelley > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Any problems, please contact the List Admin: Essex-UK-admin@rootsweb.com > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ESSEX-UK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
Civil registration started in England on 1st July 1837. Before this date births deaths and marriages can be traced via the baptism, marriage and burial records maintained by parish churches. So, to be able to assist you it is necessary for you to give more details - parishes, approximate dates, names. I don't know if I should have posted to this list or the London list, apologies if wrong list, but this is my query. Edward supposed married Louisa (someone) from Hough Upton, Bucks in abt 1839 (their first child was born in Holborn St George the Martyr in 1840). I can find them on the census until 1861. I think Louisa dies in 1866, Holborn, and Edward remarried someone named Ann (b abt 1819, Surrey) I can't find Edward at all in 1871, although I have found some of the children, but he is there in 1881 with Ann (they are living at 30 Gloucester St Finsbury). Her surname may have been Swift? I can find no trace of either marriage, and can't find Edwards birth. Can anyone assist, suggest where to go next?? TIA Jan Moon Daintree, Australia
I was wondering if anyone would have access to Birth and Marriage records prior to 1800 that would be willing to check a couple of names for me. Thank you Shelley
