Hi Eve I recommend you to get hold of any of the books by Spike Mays, particularly Reuben's Corner and Five Miles from Bunkum. The 1861 census shows Hepzibah living with her mother Margaret wife of a mariner who is not on the census. There were other children listed mostly born in East Donyland, Essex The 1851 shows Margaret as a fisherman's wife; again the husband is not on the census but the eldest son is called James so could be named after his father. On freebmd there is a birth of Hephzibah Enar CLARK (no 'e' at the end) born in Lexden registration district, which includes East Donyland. Your best option is to send for this birth certificate as it will show both parents names including the mother's maiden name. Full reference is: CLARK Hephzibah Enar; Qtr- June 1858; Registration district - Lexden; Vol - 4a; Page - 241 Two other children on the census are also on freebmd, again as CLARK William Benjamin CLARK James Prior CLARK There is a marriage of a James CLARK to Margaret PRYOR on freebmd so that would appear to be the correct marriage in Lexden in 1842. May be worth sending for this too. Diane
1861 Census: James CLARKE (Born abt 1817 in Great Coggeshall) - Master on vessel "James Margaret"!!!! - in Hampshire waters. Also on the vessel was James CLARKE (born 1856 in East Donyland, Essex) who must be his son presumably. There is a death of a James CLARKE in September quarter of 1880 in Lexden district (Ref: 4a/253). Also spotted on the Ancestry website, somebody has posted details of James (senior's) ancesters, siblings, etc, living in Coggeshall. Hello Alan I have found Hepzibah on the 1861 in East Donyland [near Colchester] with mother Margaret and siblings Margaret 15, Benjamin 10 and Sarah 6. Margaret senior is shown as a 'Mariners Wife' so presumably father is away at sea. All the children shown born in E.Donyland. In 1871 Hepzibah [this time with an 'E' added for a second name] is the only child living with Margaret Snr and she is shown as wife of a smack owner, born in Gt Bromley, Essex. Once more father must be away at sea. In 1881 Hepzibah is living with a 'Mrs James Clark' who is a widow and is the right age and born in Gt Bromley Essex to be Margaret snr of the previous returns. Going back to 1851 to see if there were any older siblings before Margaret jnr, there do not appear to be any but there are two additional children, James aged 5 and William aged 3. Once more James Snr seems to be away at sea. I can't find a marriage for Margaret and James, if Margaret's maiden name had been Erner it would have answered your query! I have an itnterest as I have the unusual surname of 'Awner' in my ancestry which has been mistranscribed many times so thouguht it worth trying to trace your Hepzibah! Anyway hope this helps a little. I don't know is I can help that much Virginia, but I do have a couple of ideas. I live not far from Southend and it sounds as if your James was born in Rochford Hospital. If his father was in the services the Palace Hotel on Southend sea front was used as a hospital : http://www.southendmuseums.co.uk/history/soshist/soshistory3.htm and it is possible that Ronald was/had been treated there and Ethel was living nearby, the houses in Hartington Road were quite large and possible Ethel was lodging there to be near Ronald or that they were both there whilst he was recovering. But as you say that Ronald died during the war I wonder if it was more likely that Ronald died in Southend of his injuries. However if he died on active service I think the best place to search for that would possibly be The National Archives. Maybe Ethel made friends with the Steins as they lived in the same road and perhaps she either died [Spanish 'flu caused an awful lot of deaths around 1919] or remarried and May Lucy informally adopted Ronald, who never the less retained his 'real' surname. Legal adoption was not possible until c1929. This 'informal' adoption is exactly what happened to my 2x grandmother in the 1870s when her mother died and her father remarried and the next door neighbour 'adopted' her. Sorry I can't be of more help. Regards, Gwyn > Her father Ronald Watford was born 24/8/1917 in Rochford South End on sea to a James Watford (born 1892 Iin shoreditch Middlesex) and Ethel Maud Hazell (born 1895 in Hackney )They lived at 54 Hartington Rd according to his birth cert that I have ... -- Gwyn Bailey OPC for Springfield, Essex

Julie, If you go to streetmap.co.uk and search with just first three letters such as "Bud" or "Bri" you will get all possibles. One I saw at glance was a Budds Farm in Essex not far from Chipping Ongar, which may be a possible. You can will also get ordinance map and can move view about if its a small area. Most farms are named, or at least most that are referred to in censuses.
