Hi all, Take a look at this site: _http://www.echo-news.co.uk/echofeatures/memories/3796447.Titanic_survivor_Millvina_Dean_signs_1912_newpaper_for_house_owner/_ (http://www.echo-news.co.uk/echofeatures/memories/3796447.Titanic_survivor_Millv ina_Dean_signs_1912_newpaper_for_house_owner/) regarding a 17th century cottage called Bay Tree Cottage, Main Road, Hockley. It's an extremely interesting article. The owner is wishing to find out any history on the cottage. Can anyone find anything on this cottage in the censuses? Or the article he might have found in the Times back in 1728? Regards Diana
Hi all, My ex neighbours have just moved into a new house on Kiln Road, Thundersley. It is just over a 100 years old and apparently it was called 'Rushmere'. Can anyone find any information on the house? Was it listed in the 1901 census? Would appreciate any help at all as it would be nice to have some background to the history of the house. Thanks in advance, Diana

I am trying to trace any descendents of Edward Lawrence and Maud Isabel (Moody) WEBB who married in Walthamstow in 1898. Their only known children were:- Isabel Helen Marjorie born 14th December 1901 Edward Henry Archibald born 3rd December 1902 Both children were born at:- 40 Pendlestone Road, Walthamstow As a matter of interest both birth certificates show West Ham, Walthamstow in the county off Surrey! ----- Original Message ----- From: "La Greenall" <elde.worth@ntlworld.com> Subject: [Ess] History of Walthamstow - was Historical Directories I've just had a quick look at the site and a read of the first few pages of the "history" and it's amazing how historical (or pre-historical) ideas have changed. From my very quick read the history is based on the belief that the world is only some 6000 years old and that most archealogical finds will have dated from this period. I've saved the site for a more in-depth read later on. Thanks Lawrence. Barbara

Hi Kevan. Thanks for the insights. I have to agree with Ann Chambers, though I've only tried Firefox - no apparent issues. I'm saddened to hear you say that they aren't adding to the database any more; I presume it's because they've achieved their basic brief. If so, then they're being very unadventurous - there's little point in opening a door by a crack to peep through, and then wander off, leaving it ajar. Doors are meant to be walked through. But it's still a good site. Anne, I did not say it does not work with firefox (which happens to be my default browser), you just get different and slightly reduced functionality. It is the same with the Ancestry site. I might as well plug Ians pubs site, to keep this on topic - http://londonpublichouse.com/ ; the site was deleted for a third time recently by an over adventurous site provider, and I lost three months worth of work. Meanwhile, the http://hertspubs.com/ site is coming along full blast and lots of Essex people getting added in. Hi Lawrence et al, (Not sure if this will get to the list, as I have changed my default email). The historical directories site is brilliant, and here are a few tips for using it. You must use Internet Explorer (as this does not work properly for all other browsers). I tend to search by location, e.g. Essex; which lists the eight entries. Select an entry by using the Directory button, and you can then browse through it by random page number, I tend to be looking for the beer retailers and publicans sections. Once you find a page, use the create a pdf rather than save the basic page, as this is a whole lot better as far as quality of content, then save this pdf file. PDF files open in acrobat reader, in case you do not own a copy, this is freely available to download from the web. You can just search through the whole site by a name, but I find this quite a task, and am usually interested in a few pages from each directory, rather than a particular named person. It's a great site, and although they are no longer adding to the site, it is worth regular repeat visits to see what has been missed on previous visits.
