    3. After some problems re-subscribing I'm glad to be beck on this list. My paternal grandmother's parents were Joseph WIFFEN & Mary Sarah NORRIS both born in Stock in 1830. Anything earlier is very sparse. Does anyone have any connection or is researching along similar lines. John.

    1. [Ess] ANDREWS alias WHITING / WHITEN – Great Sampford
    2. zoe
    3. Hi Listers, I wonder if anyone could shed some light on the ANDREWS alias WHITHING / WHITEN family. Has anyone researched them or does anyone know the origin of the 'alias'? I am particularly interested in the family in Great Sampford in the early 1600s (where I've found a few but not all of the people I'm looking for). They also spread to Radwinter by the mid-1600s. Does anyone know of them anywhere else in the area? If this distinctive surname rings a bell with anyone, I can provide more details of exactly whom I'm looking for. Regards, Zoë

    3. Hello Joy, Yes, there is a rather excellent site on Pubs in much of the South East of England. This comprises of an amazing Essex Pubs site (originally built by Essex Pubby Hunter), and now has considerable extra information from many other counties. These include most of London, much of Suffolk, Kent, Hertfordshire, Sussex, Surrey and a new addition is Dorset. You can use the local search engine on the site, for the name Holden (for example); although the site/s are not exhaustive; and will never be complete. Start at http://londonpublichouse.com/ ; but this is one of many sites that are now running, and is more than just a Pubs site. You mention that John Brown Holden was in 39 years on his death certificate, when would this be? Have you tried to locate him in early census in the UK? They were from Brentwood and register office said Billericay so did they travel or was there a sub office in Brentwood. I have been ill and so have not been able to get to a computer earlier. April when you see this I did reply personally to you but it has bounced. Thank you for your help. So I now can get on to the next question ... hm only 99 million to go ;o) Thank you all for your help once again. Ingrid Billings 'Genealogy, a game of hide and seek'

    3. Layer Breton was in Colchester Registration District, but only after 1939. Before that it was in Lexden District. So it depends on the dates you are researching. If you put Layer Breton Genuki in a Google search, these two districts should appear among the hits. I don't know whether they accept an application via email so you may wish to ask. Last price I paid was UK Sterling 2.10 per fiche plus postage (which is always by recorded delivery). The last time I bought them the price was per sheet of fiche. As one register is usually 2 sheets, you have to budget for perhaps GBP4.30 plus postage at cost. I certainly recommend charging it to a credit card as ERO calculate the postal charge for you and add it to the total. CC payment also means that if you are outside the UK you don't have to bother with sorting out payments on a UK bank or sterling cheque or getting involved with currency conversions. The will certainly accept an enquiry by email, but I believe the sticking point is that they need you to sign a statement that you will respect the copyright and will not use it for commercial purposes (or whatever the legal jargon is this week!) so the application has to be via the hard-copy form. 3. Hi Eve, I ordered microfiche from the ERO last year and I used a Microfiche Order Form to do it, which I had to download, fill out and post to them. The fiche cost 2.15pounds each. I've just had a look at the SEAX site and I can't find any links to that form, although I did find the link for their "Photocopy Order Form" Perhaps they don't use the form any more. Perhaps if you email them at ero.reprographics@essexcc.gov.uk they may be able to point you in the right direction. 3. Hi ! I agree with these possible alternatives - but it is also worth looking at Harold as another possibility ! I have a grandson who is always known as Harry, but is actually a Harold on his Birth Certificate (as a tribute to a great-grandfather) - he prefers Harry because of the Harry Potter phenomenon ! 3. Eve, I recently received an order from the Essex Council Reproduction department. Email ero.reprographics@essex.gov.uk with details of the fiches you require. They will email you back with a copy of the latest application form with up to date prices and confirmation of the records available for the parish. Return the completed form (I pay by CC and there have never been any problems but bear in mind that prior to dispatch they will email you for the 3 digit security code). I don't know whether they accept an application via email so you may wish to ask. Last price I paid was UK Sterling 2.10 per fiche plus postage (which is always by recorded delivery).
