All, I have a new site - http://pubby.co.uk/default.aspx ; let me know how the main pages should look - primarily as a site on how Ian has made a change to Public House history in the area. Did you know that Ians' brother has made a partial site of the original site at http://essexpubs.info/ ; the rest is at http://londonpublichouse.com/ Best Kevan
Hello All. A huge, highly detailed 1801 map of Kent is now on display on the MAPCO website. You can view it here: An Entirely New & Accurate Survey Of The County Of Kent, With Part Of The County Of Essex, by William Mudge, 1801. http://archivemaps.com/mapco/kent1801/kent1801.htm Use the thumbnail map at the top of each page to navigate your way around the map. Hovering your mouse pointer over the thumbnails will display a pop-up message showing the places covered by that map section. A coloured thumbnail image (place marker) shows you where you are on the map. This map also includes a search engine, enabling users to search the entire map of Kent for place names. This map is the first on the MAPCO website to include a comprehensive search feature. The search feature is located at the top right of each page, with a search box containing the words "Search This Map". The Search Engine enables a targeted search of the entire 1801 map of Kent. I hope that you find this map of interest and use. Enjoy this beautiful map! Thank you all for your continuing support for the MAPCO project. It is, and shall remain, FREE! Kind regards, David Hale, Adelaide, South Australia. MAPCO : Map And Plan Collection Online http://archivemaps.com ****************************************************
Hi to the Essex list. Can any lister tell me if there are copies of marriage licences kept at the Essex Record Office and how I would obtain a search for one. I am trying to locate a marriage in the JAS Qtr of 1891 I believe in Essex. Kind regards. Michael Battishill In sunny New South Wales Australia.
My thanks to Ann and Michael for suggesting the Huguenot Society and yes it's on my list of things to do on my next visit to the UK next autumn. However, there may be somebody out there for whom the name LYS rings a bell, or has researched Huguenots in Harwich. Thanks. Thomas the Tank Engine was written about by the Rev Wilbert Vere Awdry, born 15/6/1911 in Romsey, Hants. His father was was Rev Vere Awdry, born 14/10/1854 in Notton House, Lacock, Wiltshire. Vere's father was John Wither Awdry, born 1795 in Swindon, Wiltshire. Ref: Wikipedia & http://www.family-forest.co.uk/familytree/index.shtml So Thomas the Tank Engine's family were in the locality of Rev Charles Awdry's home and in the same profession. Hello All, I am looking for members of the LYS or LYES family in East Anglia in the 1700’s. My interest is for a certain ANN LYS married to a WIMPLE POWELL in Harwich, Essex sometime before 1784. Ann is mentioned in Wimple's will.As LYS could well be a name of Huguenot origin, and we know that there were settlements of Huguenots in Thorpe-le-Soken and other villages near by, I would be interested to learn if somebody has researched Huguenot ancestors in, and around Harwich at that time in the hope that their search could point me in the right direction. Many thanks, Colin. Alsace.

Here I am again :-0 This time I'm looking for Phil[l]ippa GUNN from Halstead in the 1841 census. Hopefully, seeing as she was born about 1845/46 in Halstead, this will give me her parents and confirmation that she, and her unmarried sisters from 1891, were also the sisters of John GUNN b.1837/38 also in Halstead. Also. In 1891, I've lost track of an Ada Maggie GUNN b.1876 in Halstead. I suppose at age 14 she's old enough to be at work somewhere in the county. By 1901, she's in Steeple Bumpstead with her father, the same John GUNN from Halstead. I know exactly what happens to her from 1906 onwards - I'm married to her granddaughter! -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg.
Thank you one and all, for assisting me with the images for Pierre Tyler GUN from Halstead. I still wonder how he came to be landed with a moniker like that! The Tyler I can probably understand. But the Pierre? Ah well, carry on digging! -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg.
Hi, Mike ! I think you need to check your dates ? IF she was born about 1845/46 she cannot possibly be in the 1841 Census ! She could only have been a "twinkle in her father's eye" at that date ! Best Wishes ! Roger. ---------------------- On 15 Dec 2008, at 23:21, Mike Fry wrote: > Here I am again :-0 > > This time I'm looking for Phil[l]ippa GUNN from Halstead in the 1841 > census. Does anyone on the list have a relation who had this pub. My great uncle, William Henry Fynn had it in the late 19th c and possibly into the 20thc. He was also a blacksmith and may have had the pub as a side line to the smithy. From memory the pub was called the black dog, Kevin gave me the name and I have lost his email. I've been looking for the family of Pierre Tyler GUNN (No! Really) born about June 1871 in Halstead, Essex. I've got the entry for 1881 from the LDS transcription, although an image would be preferable, if possible. He died towards the end of 1891, so the last chance to spot him is in the 1891 census. I think he's there. At least, Ancestry suggests he is. Could any one supply an image for this guy? Please! -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg.
