    3. Have you tried the local papers or the Essex Archives? Do you mean that James was the Borough Engineer or that he was the Chairman of the Borough Engineering Committee? The two jobs would have been quite different - the first would be a salaried appointment and the second would mean that he was elected to the local council and then appointed Chairman of a Committee. 2. Hi Cornelia Just to illustrate Steve's comments: The earliest forms of Tindall in my ancestry are "De (Of) Tyndale" or Tynedale, reflecting settlement in the valley of the River Tyne, East Lothian, Scotland, by Normans (Scandanavians who had previously conquered Normandy, France) after they subdued England in 1066. All the variants used since can probably be found in modern Essex and cetainly in the U.S. Peter Moll Tortola, British Virgin Islands From: Steve <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Re: [Ess] how do I find out... Hi Cornelia, I don't think that you can, especially not when the USA comes into the equation as during the days of mass immigration people often changed their name, or had it changed for them, for "difficult" eastern European names to similar sounding English ones. Also, given the vagaries of writing and spelling in the past, some Tindalls could have started out as Tynedalls or Tynedale. Also some people will have adopted the name because it is where they came from. Regards Steve On 10/05/2011 22:41, [email protected] wrote: how do I find out whether a surname is one where everyone with that surname is descended from one individual? the name of interest is Tindall, and I think it might be one of those names, but I don't know for certain. does anyone know? or know how to find out? I'm dna testing, and have matched with someone who has Tindalls in America, but my Tindall cousins are in England. if I could be certain that all Tindalls are related, I could help them with connecting to earlier branches of their tree, whether or not that's the branch we connect on. thank you for your help. 3. hi Bruce Do the details you have for her funeral arrangements that you have mention where the funeral was to take place? Which cemetery she was buried in? Colchester Registration District covers a wide area of Essex and she could be buried anywhere within that area, or out of that area. You can be buried anywhere not just in the place where you died. One of my ancestors died in Suffolk but was buried in his home town in County Durham. If you can tell the list whereabouts the funeral was due to take place then we might be able to help more easily with an MI for her. There might not be an MI but she might appear in the Book of Remembrance in the cemetery where she was buried. If she was buried in the Colchester area then the Colchester Cemetery & Crematorium office, which I gave you the webpage of the other day off list, might be able to help with finding her burial place in their area. They have an e.mail address on their Contacts page of the site. Give them the details of Mary's burial in an e.mail and see what they can come up with for you. You need a copy of her death certificate fairly urgently as it will answer a few questions for you. You said in your first message to the list that you thought Arthur died about 1959, what makes you think that? Do you have a document or letter etc., mentioning this? Whereabouts do you think Arthur Henry died? in Wales or in England, perhaps in Essex? There is a death on FreeBMD of an Arthur H. Thomas March Qtr. 1940 aged 55, (so born about 1885), in the Maldon Reg. District of Essex volume 4a page 1862. I could not find a death reg. for the same name in the Essex area around 1959 but then FreeBMD's transcript of the GRO index is not complete and it might be that Arthur's death is yet to be copied to the FreeBMD site. However, Maldon is not so very far from Colchester, nor from Chelmsford, in which Registration District Office the ancient Maldon registers are now kept. Do you know what Arthur Henry's occupation was given as in the censuses? Did he have the type of occupation where he would have had an apprenticeship or was he something like a general labourer or Ag. Lab when his occupation might have changed from one job to the next? If he kept the same type of occupation all his life then that might be something to check the above death entry against. If his occupation that was one which changed at every census then it will be much more difficult to pin his death down to the above entry. What was his occupation given as on any birth certs., you might have for his children? Were all of the children of Arthur Henry & Mary Eleanor Thomas born in Wales or were the last few born in England, perhaps in Essex? I found a birth in June Qtr. 1919 Chelmsford Reg. District volume 4a page 883 for a Jean Thomas where the mother's maiden name was also Thomas. I don't know if this would be of interest but thought I ought to mention it. Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<Could someone tell me if there is an MI for Mary Eleanor THOMAS (Ellen)? She died around 23 Aug 1969 and the funeral was scheduled for 29 Aug 1969. Her death was registered in the Colchester district and shows her DOB as 21 Nov 1885. Her husband was Arthur Henry THOMAS but I haven't been able to find a registration for him. 3. HI Bruce, Do you know Mary Thomas' maiden name, perhaps that is given on her death certificate. If you do know the maiden name then you might be able to look for children's births in the GRO index of births looking for the birth of Thomas children with that mothers maiden name shown in the entry. That might be a starting point for finding children of the couple. Where in the Colchester Registration District did Mary die, what town is given in the address at which she died? Who registered the death, the informant, and what relationship, if any, is given for that person to Mary? Or does it just say Present at Death? I found a marriage on the FreeBMD site that might be a possible for your couple if you don't already have their marriage. Reference- Marriages June Qtr. 1912 Newport M(onmouthshire), registration district volume 11a page 385 Mary E. Thomas & Arthur H. Thomas appear on the same reference. Maybe this is what you meant in your Message that the name Mary Eleanor Thomas is her complete maiden name. Looking on the Genuki site pages for Wales I could not find Pontywaun listed under the Towns and parishes in Wales listing but I then searched the Genuk Gazeteer for Pontywaun and found that it is very close to Newport Monmouthshire. If this the marriage of your couple then finding their Thomas children in the GRO index with a mother's maiden name of Thomas too will not be easy but you might be able to refine your search of the index by selecting Newport as the registration district and then getting entries checked for the parents first names. Do you subscribe to the Welsh mailing list? You might find that helpful. Go to the Genuki site at www.genuki.org.uk and the pages for Wales and then Monmouthshire where you might find more useful information. Regards Jenny DeAngelis <<I am looking for information about Mary Eleanor THOMAS wife of Arthur Henry Thomas. Mary died 23/24 Aug 1969 and was buried 25 Aug 1969. 3. Talking as a local... we have the daily Evening Gazette (already mentioned) and the weekly Essex County Standard, produced by the same company. The Standard (I don't take the Gazette) normally has two or three pages of paid-for death notices placed by the family/friends, plus anywhere between a couple and half a dozen obituaries written by editorial staff. I've never quite worked out what criteria are used to determine whether or not someone is "deserving" of an editorial obituary... you often see them for doctors and teachers but also for shopkeepers and pub owners. Bruce - if you do the groundwork (i.e., contact the Standard/Gazette to find out if they keep archives, and if these are accessible to the public) then - providing they are kept in the immediate Colchester area (Chelmsford would be too far) I'll be quite happy to go and have a look for you. 3. Hi Bruce Obituaries in the national press in the UK are pretty much reserved for the rich and/or famous. Even in local papers, only someone who was prominent in the local community or who had some other claim to fame would normally merit an obituary as such. Death notices, which sometimes give a little biographical detail ("much loved father of Fred and Freda and grandfather of Sharon and Tracy" etc) would be a more likely find, nationally (in The Times or Daily Telegraph) for a well to do family or locally for "ordinary" folk. Mary's will, or Arthur's (or both) might be a better way of finding out who they left behind. Best wishes Caroline Sent from my iPad On 12 May 2011, at 18:25, "Bruce P Barrett" <[email protected]> wrote: > Dear List, > > I am looking for information about Mary Eleanor THOMAS wife of Arthur Henry > Thomas. 3. I don't think that obituaries, as they have in the USA and I presume Canada are at all common unless someone is a well known person, within the bounds of the local paper, so I wouldn't get one from my local paper, though my wife or son may choose to pay to put a notice in. Sometimes notices mention the family, but often not in a way that is of use in tracking them. But, often local papers will publish letters from people trying to trace relatives. I think that the only local in Colchester is the Gazzette http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/ Cheers Steve On 12/05/2011 18:25, Bruce P Barrett wrote: > Dear List, > > I am looking for information about Mary Eleanor THOMAS wife of Arthur Henry > Thomas.
