I am writing to see if if EVE LANGFORD is still on the list. If you are Eve, you e-mailed about 5 years ago regarding the Hay family. Could you get in touch again as there is someone else interested in the family as well. Thanks Caron
Judy, I think you are left with two possibilities at the moment. Either Charles Knapp did die 1881-1891 and as you and others have suggested his records got lost somewhere in the system. The other possibility is he left home and was working. Giving his age in 1891 would have been 15, if he survived he is almost certain to have sought employment. Many people lived on shop or work premises as a kind of human burglar alarm with some of these being missed from the census. Other possibilities would be joining the military as a boy sailor or soldier. If at sea or abroad again there would be no census record. The only problem with that theory at the moment is I can find no trace of him in later life. But you could also check out local cemeteries: it appears his grandfather was buried in the City of London Cemetery at Ilford, which would be a good starting point - see http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/LGNL_Services/Community_and_living/Deaths_funerals_and_cremations/Cemetery_and_crematorium/ for others see http://www.eolfhs.org.uk/area/cemeteries/redbridge/ and http://www.forestparkcrematorium.co.uk/codeofpractice.html (this company look after all of the borough's cemeteries: all enquiries are dealt with at Forest park). You might care to note that in 1891 Ancestry have your family indexed under KRAAPP. Kind Regards, John Henley

Jenny, I can't find it either. There is a small probability that it was not reported by the local registrar and therefore didn't get on the GRO index. If you are certain that he died on 1/1/1882 then it might be worth contacting the local registration office to see if they can find the death registration. I am looking for a marriage record between William GALLEY, b. 1818 @ Great Leighs, and Sarah Ann (surname unknown), b. 1825 @ Woodham Walter. They were likely married in Great Leighs, as their first child, William, was born abt. February, 1851 @ Great Leighs. I am seeking Sarah Ann's surname, and the name of William's father. Thanks in advance... Dennis Galley

East Anglia is a hotbed of both Barnard and Bernard families, so I want to give notice of our Barnard_Bernard Y-DNA project with Family Tree DNA. The project has the aim of uniting Barnards worldwide who are interested in discovering the origins of their families and uniting members who have common ancestors so that they may compare their paper research to the benefit of each. Only males bearing the Barnard, Bernard, or a close variant can be tested. Females may take part by persuading a male relative to be tested, and we have several females in our project. The test itself is painless and consists of two swabs which are mailed by the testing company, in our case Family Tree DNA. The swabs are simply rubbed on the inside of the cheek which connects enough DNA for testing purposes. The DNA is taken from a segment of the Y- chromosome which is considered a 'garbage' area by many scientists, but not genetics people. There is nothing to suggest family traits or pre disposal to diseases etc. All it does is show whether or not two or more males are related and have a common ancestor in the last several centuries. When the test is complete it is simply mailed back to FTDNA. You can find more information at <file:///www.barnarddna.dranrab.com>www.barnarddna.dranrab.com If you are interested I would be happy to any questions regarding our Barnard_Bernard project, and I can be reached at <mailto:[email protected]>[email protected] Thank you for reading this message. Although I have found most of the records in the St James parish records, and have confirmed them in the official records from the GRO I have been unable to find a marriage for Jeremiah James and Clara Elizabeth (Bessie) Duggan, who married around 1875. When their first child, Jeremiah James is baptised in 1876, the father Jeremiah is listed as a soldier. Bessie’s background is Irish, although in the various census, she gives a number of different places in England as her birthplace. The family story is that she was born at sea. East Anglia is a prolific area for bearers of the Barnard and Bernard surnames which are often found interchanged over time. The recently formed Barnard_Bernard Surname DNA Project is dedicated to connecting researchers interested in the surnames Barnard, Bernard or close derivatives all over the world in order to look for connections between hitherto unknown cousins so that they may benefit in being able to compare their paper research. The testing company we use is Family Tree DNA which is probably the largest organisation of its kind. The test itself is very easy and painless, and consists of rubbing cotton swabs or plastic swabs on the inside of the cheek. As the test is done on part of the Y-chromosome, only males bearing the surname can take the test. However females or others interested in the name can take part in the project by persuading a male relative to take the test and perhaps share the cost. We have already found matches between members of our group who were able to connect and compare their research. In each case one or both profited by discovering more about their heritage. I am the volunteer administrator of the group and would be pleased to hear from anyone that would like more information. Please email me at [email protected]
Many thanks Pauline for your prompt response to me posting. It is appreciated. Also thanks for the link. It was also interesting to read what you had to say in relation to BARLTROP.
