Form the 1841, it looks like their eldest child, Thomas, was born c1837, so they probably did marry before registration began. There is a birth registration for a George Cairns, jan-mar 1839, Durham district, vol 24, p 79 If you order the cert. using Ann and Thomas as checking points, if it's the wrong cer. you won't be charged the full £7.00 Hope this helps.
